can someone please post how the classes work in regards to horses. its the one thing im not totally sure about. class 6 is higher then class 1 true? i know its a silly question but am yet to b 100% sure. this is because many tyms i c class 1 horses rated better in class then class 6 horses. also what is 1mw races etc. those weird ones are other things that stump me.

a Class 6 or better than a Class 1 your right there, as far as the NMW and the 1MW go I usually rate them at about a class 6. then you go to the likes of Listed, Group 3, Group 2, Group 1.

Hey Bordi. Here is a little something I picked up in my travels that may help you with regards to class ratings. I found that the chart was helpful on the basis that 2 points equal as Lenght . In very basic terms the idea would be to find the class 'rating' and minus the weight to be carried in tomorrow race. Hope this helps.

Saw in yesterday's program (U.S.) for ZITI's Last race August 20, 2005 at Kembala Grange ----- CHG MDN(us$8k). How does this differ from a regular maiden (MDN) race? Also, how much stock is to be put in Barrier Trials and the actual order of finsh? In the case of first time starters (lifetime) without any barrier trials listed (like Bel Danero 3rd Sandown-Hill yesterday), how would I have confidence backing this horse? Obviously Freedman is a great trainer and Danero is great breeding, but how can I know that he was ready besides the tote being 6/5? Here in the states, we have workouts listed that don't always mean anything

I too backed Ziti, but the only factor which diminished it's performance was the ride of the apprentice, who, let's face it, did not have the strength to "drive" the horse hard to the line. I've studied this race and with a more senior rider the horse may have finished much closer(imo).
What you were talking about was that, previously, it had run in a restricted race only open to E&G(entires & geldings), whereas this race was open to fillies, mares and all male contenders.
Classwise, I refer you to another post which outlines such class differentials.
Barrier trials, forget about it....there is no compunction here for trainers and riders to show too much in relation to their prospects. Just treat them as "glorified hit-outs," meaning....take them as you see/assess them.
Also, here in Oz, betting is a very significant factor in assessing the prospects of a runner in today's races. Look for the overnight shortener to give you a "leg-up" as to it's prospects for this day's racing.

saratoga samchaz , if you are looking for a different angle on Australian races , other than defining 'class' from the official club handicappers perspective the guys at everyrace.com provide some good info on Australia wide racing. Alternatively, if you can get an electronic copy of the Sportsman you would be in for a good read on racing , barrier trial workouts etc here in Australia.
