Just wondering what you all think the top 5 trainers and top 5 jockeys are..
one of my mates dads used to use a system based on them. He used to pick the top 5 trainers and jockeys, interlink them every week and find a horse thats got both.. he says he used to throw 500 on every race, if he lost he'd go home... if he won he'd piss it up.. any comments ??

Yeah, my comment is that's a pretty reckless way to bet!
Anyway, here are my rankings:
Jockeys
D.Oliver, D.Beadman, C.Brown, D.Nikolic, G.Boss, L.Cassidy
Trainers
J.Hawkes, L.Freedman, G.Waterhouse, T.McEvoy, G.Ryan, J.O'Shea
I hope I didn't forget someone. Anyway, I know I named 6 there, but I couldn't decide between Boss & Cassidy or Ryan & O'Shea.

The problem with the idea is that invariably most of the horses are well under the odds because of the popularity of betting on top trainers and jockeys.
However, I've been making a nice profit backing Hawkes/Beadman when the horse is NOT favourite but still under 10/1.

The only people who make money out of 'owning a racehorse' is everyone else [especialy trainers] EXCEPT the owner !!!
Cheers.

G.Waterhouse hardly wins in Melbourne. Doesn't mean she's not a great trainer.
Personally, I was mainly basing my opinions on how the jockeys and trainers go in their home state. However, I did rank John Hawkes as the top trainer because he seems to do well pretty much everywhere.

Ok Grrrrr.
The horses picked come from all over the place, yet the jockeys/trainers are all current?.
Anyhoo, the best 5 jocks I've SEEN would be, in any order Wayne Harris, Peter Cook, Mick Dittman, Darren Beadman & Damien Oliver.

Yeah, I understand all that. I know that he has the most powerful owners behind him, but I didn't put any qualifications on it like that. I was just basing it on overall consistency and results and on that I rate him number 1, just ahead of Freedman.

Trainer wise I always try to go for the smaller ones away from the Hawkes, Waterhouse and Freedmans.
I always try to follow Shaun Dwyer, John O'Shea, Brian Mayfield Smith, David Hall and Gary Portelli.
Jockey wise Glen Boss would be on top for me has been for a couple of years now then outside the obvious picks like Beadman and Oliver I like Steven King, Brett Prebble, Jim Byrne and Kerrin McEvoy
