Backmarker who has managed to find some trouble in her last two runs but finishes very strongly indeed. Latest effort, a fortnight ago, was a moderate 5th at Cheltenham, but will improve here with just a reasonable passage over the concluding stages.

Does a horse falling over count as an unreasonable passage? Fair dinkum, this should have won by the length of the straight. Yes, I did my dough, but if you saw the race you would know what I mean.

Only two bets today. A 1st (Heptonstall) and 2nd (Shocks). My wife thinks she is a better tipster though, her only bet today was General Minolta (she likes photography, go figure).

I think I'll take up chess.

One of the constants in racing, I suppose, is that dedicated backmarkers are always going to be exposed to greater risks of interference in running than their counterparts who run on the pace.

There were no "shocks" in Shocks not gaining the ideal corridor. It's almost becoming her trait. Perhaps the likely risk of interference is often built into the odds, but she did start shorter than I expected.

I'll put it down as all being part of the education process - mine, not the mare's. End result: money slightly down, experience slightly up!

The majority of winners in 1000-2000m races were no worse than 8th at the 400m mark. I don't have any precise figures though.

I don't use this as a rule, but worth looking at.
