View Full Version : RACE OF THE DAY COMP

I wasn't going to. Apart from the Easter carnival, I was planning on sticking to Saturdays with this comp. Being a Monday, I was a bit worried that everybody won't get on here to give their tips.

Geez, where have you been Panther??? First week in the comp and you get the best score! Anyway, with about a month to go, wesmip1 has got a good lead but there's still a chance for someone else to catch up.
By the way, all three guys who changed their tips because of the slow track, ended up getting a lower score than if they had kept them the same. ;)

OK and I was the other person to change my picks but I had a sensational day regardless of the changed order of selections.... I increased my lead in the comp, coming overall second for the day which I am still happy with.
I wish I had more than 60 points gap though as it is going to be hard to contunually get good scores each week. I thought this week was the hardest yet.
Good Luck Everyone.

Duritz,
I haven't done the form on the raec yet but I have to say at first glance I might end up taking very similar to you ( same top 4 but slightly different order ).
I'll end up deciding tommorrow after I do the form tonight ... Got to watch the tahs and Cowboys win first though.
Good Luck.

Well I am down to 5 horses selected for todays race but I think I'll wait and see what the weather does. There is a storm moving up from the south and it will hit sydney before the main race. I want to see how bad it is ( and whether or not it does rain) before making my final selections.
God Luck everyone.

Hotel Grand is easily the best pick in this race. If he runs even at 90% of what he is capable he should win it easily. I'll be disspoainted with anything else.
Primus has been running ok but hasn't tackled this distance before. He is a solid horse though and can't be left out of the top 2.
De Beers has a good inside barrier draw and looks like he has been aiming to run this race. I expect him to hold just off the leaders and come home strongly.
Darci Brahma has been dissappointing in his last few races and has had no acceleration at the end of his races. Hopefully he finds form again today. Still his disspoainting form miught still be enough to cover the rest of this field.
It was a very hard decision to not include Spinney but first time at this distance and a very bad barrier draw for this could see him sitting too wide on the turns (unless he falls back or burns up energy getting to the lead).

Obviously some of us here read Phil Purser [just racing] the day before the Slipper and took on-board what he said and some of us didn't......
Wish I had as the 'brake' backed the winner and swears blind she never read the article [lier !!].

'Only 2 good horses will emerge from the slipper'
[Quote] I’ve said it before, so I won’t bore you to sleep, but tomorrow’s Slipper field will be proven, with the passage of time to be a shocker................
and...........They are basically a very average group of horses that will go nowhere in life. It will be remembered as the worst batch of 2YO’s Australia wide since Catbird won in 1999.
and..........There are two potential top class racehorses in this Slipper field tomorrow – just the two. Both are fillies and both will become good gallopers in life and win black type races. They are $9 and $12 chances respectively (NSW TAB] at 4pm today.
and.............Anyway back to the Slipper and I consider the only two winning hopes in the race are Miss Finland ($9) and Maiden galloper Boom Time Savings ($12). I like 2YO horses to have started – and performed at Rosehill - before backing them there. Both have started there and both have performed well there. You need a horse that is strong at the business end of 1200 – and both the named fillies can really reel off a sectional and scream home.
etc.etc.

Thanks for that info Sports. Now that I'm aware of that I'll take the oppertunity to toss out Headturner for 2nd. after another form look. He is a [false fav.] one pace grinder in what is going to be a sit and sprint Derby without Hotel Grand leading for speed.
Testerfiable goes in and I'm taking a punt Sepia's bruised feet are OK by race time. Last start second coming from last was a blistering sprint, even with a couple of bruised front feet [look out for heartbar or eggbar shoes in gear changes. Had them last start].

Bartholomew was also grandstanding about his bet in the Slipper to win an 'easy' $190,000 on Boom Time Savings:-)
Headturner might be the lay of the day just like Casino Prince was in the Slipper. No big punters wanted 'any' price on him. They couldn't give him away although the owner of Spotingbet took him to win $300k for the place:-)

No drama there .I don't mind sticking my neck out. Egg on my face no problem as we all get our share of it so don't crow too loud mate :-)
And did mister wonderful get his $4 on headturner? I don't think so.
Interesting tactics. Boss sacrificed Goldtown to set a break neck speed to set headturner up and put primus out of it. Interested to know who the connections were for Goldtown because they wouldn't be too happy with Boss if there was nothing 'going on'[?]

I've got an idea for a great new rule - effective just for tomorrow. What does everyone think of this?
New rule, just for tomorrow
Any contestant (and I mean any contestant, not being biased or favourable towards any here) - Any contestant whose moniker starts with the letters WE (because tomorrow is WEdnesday) is not allowed to tip Serenade Rose in their top four.
So, looking through the list, the affected would be..... searching.... just the one person! Wesmip.
What do we think?

lol yeah I know, a measly 2.5 points.
Bit dirty on myself about Proprietor. He rated 115 three runs back behind Takeover Target, was a great run, have been following him closely since but today only gave him 112 instead, which made him 5th pick, priced him $16. He's obviously gone 115 and won. I should have given him 114 at least, 112 was too much penalty just b/c of one poorer run LS. Need to be more forgiving of one bad one.
wesmip1
19th April 2006, 11:13 PM
Durtiz,
Sorry about the late reply but been at Poker all night (came 12th).
I never had Proprietor in my top 6-7 of the race at all. Why did you rate him so high (apart from his run behind takeover target) ? Also roughly how long does it take you to rate the race ?
Good Luck.

Hi Wesmip - I rated him high because he deserved it on the 115 behind TTarget. Also, in the run behind Falkirk, he was on the worst going on the inside division. Video comment that day - "joint led inside div (worst side) even tempo, accelerated - lead that division 2 lengths 300, maintained that well but on wrong part of track. Won inside div by 2.3L. " Nice run on bad going, rated 109 but obviously suffered due to that. He then failed in Sydney (at Warwick Farm though, diferent kettle of fish to Randwick), rating 107 that day. I assessed him at 112, and had him priced $16 in fifth spot. If I'd allowed him the full 115 from behind TTarget he'd have been 2nd pick, only slightly behind California Dane. I should have given him 114, 3 points was too big a penalty for one bad run. Oh well, live and learn.
As to your second query, I can spend up to an hour on a race, or I could rush through it in five minutes, because I have their ratings and video comments. Ideally I like to spend about 45 mins on a race.
Good luck Wesmip.

I think the NZ horses are starting to look good and take our measure. We haven't got much serious talent going around because our breeding industry is a mess, mostly producing overpriced rubbish from weak bloodlines with poor SR records from what they are producing. Fooram [NZ] walked in last start which wasn't a bad measuring stick of the Kiwi talent. Zabeet[NZ] might be the one to catch and Fooram's odds will be poor value. Miss Finland is heading places and Men at Work [NZ] might show Eremin up whose odds will be pathetic.
It all seems a bit of a dart throw with Group races this year. Shocking betting propositions except perhaps for exotics. A bookies picnic usually as how many surprises have we seen win these big races at big odds? Enough for a win punter to be well into loss chasing Group wins. How much money has been done by punters on Lad of the Manor in all his failures and he is only one of the disappointments. Our whole breeding industry needs one hell of a shake up. Too many rich idiots around who know nothing about race horses. They will buy anything and at stupid prices and as long as that goes on the industry is going to continue to sink into mediocrity.
Makabe Diva was a Champion because there was no compitition to compete against. 10-15 years ago she wouldn't have had half the runs on the board she ended up with.

Like I said earlier the NZ horses are looking good and the aust. breeding industry is a joke. It took an old stager to [just] win this staying event Cup from 2 kiwis. I had Zabeet on top and collected a nice 1x4 ew at least. No one else had it anywhere here except one punter here for 4th. I think.

Yeah well done Wesmip, you did great. I thought I was like Eremein (a moral), but it turns out you were like County Tyrone (had us covered a long way out). So, I'm like Miss Finland (second), and Sportz is like Steven King (spectator!) :P

I thought Pursur's comments he wrote Friday were good for a laugh when I read them this morning.
Quote: "The Sydney Cup is on tomorrow and it unfortunately has Group 1 status. What a shocker it is. The mob who run the joint must know that too. See how there is a 45-minute gap after the Cup and before the next. It’s not for presentations and feel good speeches like some may think, it’s to let the slow ones get back home at the end of 3200 metres to the only people who could possibly love them – their owners!
Before the gates fly for the Sydney Cup you can cop the dicky legged Eremein at a bit of odds-on, or before that one you can watch Miss Finland in action, or before that you can try to see if Snitzel should have stayed home like one part owner wants – or raced – like the other part owner wants! Two people – out of two – so we have 100% disagreement. They apparently can’t agree on “will we run or won’t we”, according to newspaper and radio reports! It’s all good for a giggle. Wouldn’t be dead for quids!"

LOL - easy way to measure the lack of strength of that Syd cup yesterday is that no doubt County has turned in the same performance as he did in 2005 and 2003, but instead of running close up places, this time he won by 2 lenghts. So, it was the same County Tyrone but the ones around him were 2-3 lenghts worse than normal.
Eremein dour off a 2400m race but class prevailed. Clearly ran like a 2400m horse, would've won by 3L if that had been the trip.
