View Full Version : Who are we?

Mr ed
4th July 2006, 01:23 AM
Fellow members, is it me, the fifteen crownies i've drank tonight or is anyone else sick and tired of getting on this forum night after night and perusing the opinions and views of people who we don't know anything about and who we will never meet? I have a mental picture of most the forumites here (sorry Sportz, yours isn't pretty mate), but without any information i'm afraid these images just don't have any bearing. That is why i'd like for us all now to take some time out from our formguides, videos, ratings, speed maps and whatever else us die-hards use to try and track a winner, to share some information about ourselves with each other and if nothing else gain a little more insight into the individuals with whom we all spend so much time conversing with on a day to day basis.

So come on everybody, no need to be to specific, maybe just a first name, age, occupation and what you hope to acheive from punting would be a good starting point.

Stay tuned as the bombshell of the century will be dropped in just a few short moments as i reveal myself.

Cheers ED

It was a cold, dark night a couple of years back now, when a young lad infactuacted with horseracing was scouring the world wide web for anything he could read about the sport of Kings. Little did he know that he was soon to stumble across a mine, not of gold nor coal, but one of information that would see his punting in good steed for his future gambling exploits. So this young, bright-eyed teen embraced his good fortune and registered to become part of this elite few, he would now be reffered to as Mr ED. But alas, all does not end there, as two and half years of lies and deciept has forced this once innocent young fellow into the cruel depths of adulthood, for his name is not really ED it is DANIEL.

Hey everyone, as you've just read i have decieved you all, i apologise, i was immature and stupid i hope one day you'll find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Anyway i am 21 years old, and a Uni student in Melbourne, I work part-time in a bar and spend most of my free time studying the gi-gi's.

I started punting at age 13 whilst living in Darwin and have been obsessed with everything to do with the industry ever since. I believe i am a half decent judge when it comes to finding a winner and over the past two-years i have shown healthy profits, but my issues with self-control will probably relinquish my chances of ever making a decent quid out of the game.

Cheers Daniel.

Well here goes

My name is actually Peter not Raw Instinct who would have figured that I do think the old bloke would have had trouble typing with his hooves :) I am 29 years old abd have only really been gambling or really followed horse racing since about 2000, before that I would have the odd bet now and then but usually only on the big days always Melbourne Cups and so forth. My name which I use here is obviously named after the former horse who I grew and affinity with he started racing in Brisbane around the same time I started punting more regularly and he became the 1st horse I really followed and he will probably be my fav horse for along long time now he was never anything flashy but he was a tough little bloke who gave 100% everytime he stepped out on the track.

I work in a Plumbing store we are basically a retail outlet for both Trade and walk in customers I have been there for the last 4 years and it isn't a bad place to be before that I worked in a sports store for 7 years and that pretty takes up all the years since I have left school.

I was born and bred and Rockhmapton and I swear one day I will get out of this place, It isn't bad I guess but like most smallish towns there isn't a great deal to do on the weekends outside of the cinemas or shopping and neither is good for your wallet especially with the girlfriend around :)

I played Rubgy Union here for 10 years with one club playing A Grade for pretty much all that time from 17-26yo and almost played 200 games for the club however a couple of years ago I decided I had had enough of the game and haven't gone back since some days I regret it but for the most part my body thinks it is a great idea I gave it away.

A couple of mates myself and my girlfriend all want to go to the Melbourne Cup week some stage in the not to distant future we were possibly looking at next year maybe being attainable if I was a better gambler it could have come sooner, My girlfriend and I also want to go to the USA at some stage I have been a huge Chicago Bears fan since I was about 15yo and we would eventually like to go over there for a few weeks and try and catch a game or 2 aswell as make our way around the Chicago area and maybe a couple of other places while we are there.

So far we have been to the Doomben Cup, Stradbroke & Brisbane Cup days last year and the Chipping Norton day this year and have had a ball each of the days we are certainly wanting to expand on that list, I also went and saw my beloved Tigers beat the Dragons whilst in Sydney earlier this year which was a great night also. That pretty much sums me up anyway this should be fun to read anyway good idea Mr Ed

Okay, sounds good...

My turn..
Just got home from work, been there 5 years and do one thing wrong last week, and got the **** blown out of me for the first time ever! Not happy to put it mildly.

Just turned 30, de facto missus (I should hurry up and marry her..), 1 x 12 year old kid, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 6 fish. I work in manufacturing industry.

I got my user name playing Championship Manager 3. Louis Saha was a god in that game... hence the name.. Saha is a star! Real name Aaron.

Until the age if 27-8 I was a mug punter like 99% of other people.. and probably like most, one day searching for a winner on the internet at Melbourne Cup time.... and so the story goes.

I started creating a huge racing database 12 months ago.. I have some awesome **** stacking up the profits, but more time is needed before I hit it full time. I think I have a knack to pick a winner as I have 50 odd systems I am now analysing closely that have had 50-150 bets all returning between 50-100% profit.

Most of my systems are very similiar and are slight variations of each other.. so in most of them the same horse is selected. I have tried to identify my 5 niche areas of punting though, hopefully within 3 years all 5 have systems selecting different horses from one another, but returning a minimum of 30% virtually guaranteed. Not many selections but that is the idea, minimum bets.. maximum profits.

My dream is to earn enough punting just for one reason... So I don't have to work. I think it is acheivable but it does take time, hard work, research, patience, building the bank up... and self-control. Hence my whinge above...

... but like Ed, unfortunately picking a winner means jack **** if one has a lack of self-control. Something I am trying really hard to overcome.

I think over the years if I'd only put $1 on each horse I've bet on.. I'd be a mile up, but those big bets have a habit of running second alot. Trust me, if you feel the urge... seek me out :) I'll tell you all about it.

This week for the first time though, I had a system that returns at least 30% (my target all along) with 95% confidence long term (it's currently returning 112%) but only 1 bet per week... and more will be coming very soon.

Now that I have that confidence behind me that I am on a winner long term I hope that I am cured of the need for a punt on something else.

Would love to go to the Melbourne Cup one day, and have the money behind me to smash my selection up... and ride it home all the way, first past the post. That would be exciting... and tell my boss where to go!!!

to be sociable will acknowledge this post.
i live in southern tasmania and know nothing about racing.
it has taken me 25 years to come to this conclusion and each saturday i re-inforce this.
i work for myself but dont make enough to punt heavily thankfully.
i am a councillor on the local council so am on the receiving end of a lot of suggested improvements from people.

my biggest complaint about punting is that after 25 years i think i know things when time and time again prove that i dont.

on saturday i had umaprince as second selection in the glasshouse but because it had been beaten at rockhampton i concluded it couldnt win.
i always do this sort of thing no matter how often i try to mechanise my methods to stop it.

dont take the punt too seriously and enjoy it. good luck to you in your endeavours and thanks for taking the trouble to introduce yourselves.

This is good reading so ill add mine.

Im 23 yrs old and live in Brisbane out on the bayside. I havnt been betting all that long, and i started out putting on 1 bet every satruday which was a tip off "THE HORSEWHISPERER" on a radio station we have here called Triple M.
Then i basically started having a look at the form myself and the rest is history. My first momemt that i remember really getting excited from this pastime was on a saturday a few years back when i had a $10 e/w bet on Qualo at brisbane which i had decided anything i win i will put on Motivate. Qualo won and being new to the game couldnt fathom putting $100 dollars on a horse(i still cant) So i had $20 e/w on Motivate instead, motivate came screaming down the outside only to fall maybe 3 inch's short of an awesome win and a huge payout for me. I think thats what really hooked me.

So anyway, im just a saturday punter, very very rarely will i bet through the week, and i do it purely for the fun after i finish golf on a saturday morning. I dont believe in all these systems and everything that i read about(although im not bagging anyone thats making any money out of them, im just not taking it that seriously at this stage), and basically love picking a winner from doing my own research on a friday/saturday morning.

Topsy99 i to thought umaprince was a great chance saturday so i had a few bucks each way on him and top marc. Although i wish i had my bet from top marc on umaprince instead of the other way around.

Keep up the good work guys.

Cheers....Brett

Gee ed, you started something warm and fuzzy here [or the crownies did].

Great to see and don't worry about that 'oh my god what have i done' feeling you will have tomorrow:-)) .........I've been there and lets face it we will all be dead soon enough, so a little bit of sharing does as much for us all as a nice 10/1 shot getting up for us. Life's a journey, not a destination and sharing it is as good as it ever gets.

In fact ed, these are the best post[s] I have seen for a very long time. ......Thank you.

G'day All Stix here (real name Tony)

I'm 32 yo, live in the most liveable City in the world (Melbourne) and I am lifesytle consultant by trade (Chartered Accountant)

I've always had an interest in horses, both gallops and harness. My Uncle used to race pacers and trotters around Shepparton so I've always had a soft spot for them (Like Barney !)

I guess it's funny that as I was growing up, I always used to watch Wide World Of Sports on 9 and they'd have the racing on a Saturday afternoon and I'd like to go throught the form and pick a few to follow as I studied away.... then I noticed the form guide used to be taken out by my (evil) step Mother and thrown in the bin as she picked it up from outside once it had been delivered....... Bi%ch !! I had the last laugh and used to hide it amongst my notes!

Then at uni I bought a program called Hooves OF Thunder which was a Horse racing/owning/training simulation and I used to to try and win at that, wouldn't be happy till I had a stable of champions and $10M in the punting kit..... so my competitive streak was starting to take over and my interest in "winning" at this game intensified.

Once i moved to Melbourne to a firm where the Partners were heavily into racing - one loved the gallops, the other heavily into racing/breeding trotters - and we had the odd punting syndicates which did OK..... but my real interest into serious punting was sparked by a little horse nicknamed "Elvis" that from memory was beaten just by Kempinsky ina Group 2 @ MV - I remember My Dad and I were fishing and had the radio on and it was the most enthralling call I had ever heard for some unknown reason......Then after the race the caller said these two have a future in front of them.... guess he was right about one of them...

Anyway from that day I've put my head down and had a crack at this caper and I am happy now that with with my efforts - in what amounts to almost 3 years of punting - I now own my own home and have enough cash keep the missus happy (VERY important!)....... (still pinch myself!)

Anyway, that's my journey to the "Dark Side"..... OH... and of course GO PIES !!

I'm 35yr's young live in Brissie been on the punt since i was about 17. Just over 3 years ago i discovered this site and read just about every thread that was here. I learnt so much in such a short amount of time. I've always been lucky on the punt but had no idea of staking , ratings , systems or anything..
I looked at systems but found that your own ratings,,speed maps and heavy video study works the best ,,for me anyway...also level staking is proved the biggest help ..
I started a "Mavs Tips" thread so i could experiment with some level stakings and beginners luck seemed to shine for awhile there. This was the platform and was even lucky enough to get a kick off a friend who won a stack backing a few horses i had tipped him in a row.
We now have joined forces with another and target the Saturdays. This involves input from all 3 of us,, we then discuss the races we'll be betting on (final say is up to me) I usually head to the track and atleast one of us stays home on the net. This way we get the best odds available...
I suppose we do things against the norm,,,Trifectas ,trebles and 1st4's and even exactas ...plus we bet in anything up to around 15 races on a Saturday...but things seem to be working though..especially of late..
I have a small following that have my email and have shown interest in joining the syndicate....but its alittle early for that sort of thing but something we might look at in the future....dont want that sort of responsiblity yet..

I bet with my own cash on other days but not the same stake as on Saturdays ,,and not very well the last 6 months...but overall the figures are good so im sticking with it for awhile longer..
I guess the secret to our success is we are betting with winnings. i guess this makes us alittle more brave as we arent risking our nest egg or anything...we all have well paid jobs (Operations Manager in the transport Industry) and although i've gone post divorce midlife crisis nuts of late with globe trotting , buying donkeys ect we are all still very secure...
I plan to have an extended holiday next year,,travell to Europe and then concentrate on going full time...imagine following the carnivals around interstate and overseas and just doing ratings ,watching races all day...tis the life for me.

I dabble in breeding and have shares in racehorses,,,maybe you can guess which ones ;) if they start winning i'll let you know..

oh...love my footy, love the cricket and play alittle golf (off 16) huge U2 fan and have seen there concerts at different cities across the world..luckily saw them in LA last year as they cancelled there concerts here in OZ...

Good thread Mr Ed..

Ah mate. 1960's to early 70's Melb. Uni. scene [a fresh face kid just down from Surfers Paradise where I grew up, to move into a shared house with cousin Silvia a librarian at Latrobe library with the rent at $18 total for a 4 bedroom terrece house], the Carlton scene, the parties, the pubs with live bands, the $2 flagons of red [glass flagons] and green ginger wine ....and the women. oh the women [and the mini's]! Duffle coats and desert boots, the politics, the demo's, burning of draft cards [not this boy though], Ryan the last man hung....'Jonnies Green Room' open 24/7 [pool],

'All meals half a crown standing up or lying down' was the sign at the cafe next to the Carlton 'Bug House' [cinema] which had canvas seats and with a girl you could ..... anyway brought a tear to this old eye thinking of those days.

M/Valley night trots and Saturday racing with my Grandfather who bred a few horses out on his farm at templestowe on the yarra [yes farm, no suburbs past Heidelberg in those days]. Being picked up by him in Carlton in his big old fashioned Jag that always smelt of leather, hay and horses.

The introduction to the mysterious punt and all his racetrack mates from the stables to the members. A great old ****** who is now probably still among his punting mates and twisting a Bookie's arm up in the 'top paddock' [must be a few that made it up there] for 'fair odds' on long dead champions, still racing 'furlongs' on feathered racetracks among those wispy clouds .. ...'give me 5's, give me 5's on the big grey' !

Cheers to all.

Hi everyone.

I don't post on the site as a rule. I think out of fear for putting up donkeys and the ridicule that could follow.

I am 31 years old, married 3 kids the eldest by default who is going to make me a grandfather this year.

My name Malua comes from the horse that one the Melbourne Cup the year my great grandfather was born. Never knew this until he gave me a rifle when I was about 12 with his name and year of birth scratched into it.

I love horses in any form and really enjoy seeing people getting the best out of them in any discipline.

I have followed the races since a young age as my great grandmother was a SP Bookie.(although I am too young to really know how all that worked)

I have owned shares in 5 horses and my greatest thrill was one of them running in Brisbane. He ran 8th but I was still proud to have got one down to the big smoke. The horses won 4 country cups out here in the west between them and as an owner you feel 10 feet tall when you are in the winners stall.

As a rule I punt only on "blackbookers" that I have seen or heard go round and thought were a chance next run.

If I stuck to this plan I would be a mile in front, however I also have the eternal problem of too many bets, some when looking back at them were absolute stupidity.

I also follow trainers, love Brian Mayfield Smith, probably cause he did time as a ringer up north where I grew up, and Craig Smith because he trained a couple of my horses and is a genuinely top bloke.

I think the guys who consistently put forward their thoughts are to be highly commended, I especially enjoy the Saturday Brisbane rundown and the My selections for today.

I think the forum is great, only recently I had a look at another one and there is more posts on bagging others than about the racing. Not my scene thanks.

I really should post more and promise I will endeavour to do so.

Now isn't this just the best thing you've read on this site for ages.

Must admit Crash the old "oh my god, what have i done!" feeling, certainly entered my mind the next morning. I think it was this feeling juxtaposed with with them crownies and red wine 'don't ask', that had me face down in the toilet early 'the morning after'.

Good on ya's for having a go, my mates all gamble but none of them have any real interest in racing, that's why i like this site.

An interesting read fellas. Good to put some background behind the names.

I am about 30, a doctor in rural Queensland and have been punting since I was about 18. Have my good days and bad days but have imroved a stack since getting some ideas from this forum. I would love to have a magical, simple, reliable and guarranteed profitable system but am still looking. I don't post on here as much as I would like becuase I have not developed 100% confidence in my selections yet and wouldn't want to lead anyone else down the garden path. I appreciate the contributions made by everyone and in particular love the Brisbane thread.

Good thread Ed,
Havnt posted for a while had a contract to take care of in the country. I'm a roof plumber by trade and have worked for myself since I was 19. Luv2bet sums it up for me, whether its footy, horses, poker, or two flies.... im in. It all started for me when I moved to Darwin as a 19 year old and lived in parap, which backed on to the fannie bay race track, the rest is history. I've made nice profits from racing and that is mainly due to tips from a couple of mates, one is a pro and gives me a couple of tips a week which i back heavily. The rest of my bets are made up from form study and ratings, something I havnt had any time to do for a while. I am 31 years old, married with 3 kids, 2 boys (9 and 2 months) and a 6 year old girl. Love my fishing and golf but finding time is hard. Am an absolute sports fanatic, will watch any competive sport but especially love soccer. Broke into a premier league team in s.a at 15 years old and have had some great experiences on a few trips overseas playing. (playing against rio ferdinand while he was at west ham is my claim to fame). Had a friendly against all the old boys at newcastle which was huge as well. As a defender I had kevin keegan in my ear the whole game, a few others that played that day were terry mcdermott, peter beardsley, barry vennison.
I am in shares on a few horses, 1 which will be running in a couple of weeks and a nice looking 2 year old gearing up for its first crack.
Get over to melbourne every year for some racing, been to 2 caulfied guines, 2 caulfield cups, 3 cox plates a few derbies and a melbourne cup. Wont go to flemington for the big ones any more, its getting too crowded.
Well, thats enough dribble from me, back to the form...

Will join in if I may fellas. this is the best read on here for a good while.

Was introduced to the punt by my maternal grandfather at about age 7. (he used to drag me to the tracks of a Saturday in central Qld where I would play tackle football wth the other kids of about the same age and get lost and generally make a nusiance of myself).
Started off betting in 50cent units on the local tote, of course when I lost I would go crying and whinging to Pop and he would fix me up with a new $2 bank, dont really know if that was a good or a bad thing.
Reasonably happily married, pigeon pair of kiddies, both just into thier teens, plumber by trade, golf handicap 21 (would like play a bit more often but back will not allow)

Got the bug really bad when at age 16 or so I had $5 eachway on a thing called Red Bream in Sydney, it saluted @33/1. I have been hooked ever since.

Biggest wins on punt were a trifecta on the Melb Cup when good old Skybeau ran 3rd (paid $5400 from memory) also had $100 each way Skybeau @50's. A freind and I actually had the same 5 horses picked for the Cup but were too losy to take a first four between us, yes it got up of course and paid something like $50,000

Another one was a $100 all-up Alcove @12's (in the oaks I think) into Espinosa @ 15/2.
Actually, it has been a while since I had a real good win, I had better get into Saturdays form.
God only knows I must be due.

good thread mr ed..

well my real name is Nikolas and am 21. i used to dj and dluzion was my name so i use it for every forum i register for

i use to play soccer professionally and when i was 18 shifted my efforts from school to soccer as i had a few euro clubs interested(livingstone in scotland, bolton and a few serie b clubs) but at 18 i suffered a bad knee injury which resulted in a knee reco. then a year later had an athroscope, a year after that did my hernia while trying to recover. so three years later ive left with no education no soccer career and no clkue what to do.

then one day at the slipper i had a bet on a horse called freemason(god bless his soul) and he won beating northerly giving me a 5 figure return and ever since i have been punting full time. i dont really punt on the horses but sports is my speciality. i use the weekdays to study and research and then plunge on the weekdays. i specialise in soccer and footy with a dash of tennis. ive been able to do this for a year and a bit now but will go back to study next year as this lifestyle can be tough and tedious and also would like some sort of cushion if i go bust. ]

anyways that me best of luck to all

Time to step up to the plate i guess.

First name Andrew, 22 yo Graphic Designer from Melbourne.

Starting with the name-My mate ordered the Tyson v Holyfield Pay per view quite a few years back and i remember hearing Evandfer "The Real Deal" Holyfield being called out. Since then i have started my own nickname for all forums and even among mates i am known as "deal".

My first winner i ever remember picking was Juene in the 1994 Melb Cup. My dad used to act as SP bookie while we were at a Melb Cup gathering and it was always $1 each way and he would pay tote odds. But once old enough to "really" gamble i remember my first ever winner was not all that long ago, I remember watching a horse ruinning in the bush somewhere and notching up its 5th or 6th race win in a row. It finally came to melb and happened to be running at Flemington. Its name "Starcraft", Paying $35 it was last around the home turn-even went out of camera. But sure enough, on cue put in a massive finishing burst and left me cheering and the local TAB stunned.

Keen sportsman, AFL my main go but love my golf(Been as low as 4 but off 5-6 during footy season) Gave cricket up after juniors finished as i hated fielding with a passion.

Member at Flemington so attend every meeting throughout spring and autumn and try my best during footy season but very tough as Saturdays is game day.

Currently single and trying with a bit of luck with Melbournies finnest fillies.

I probably forgot to mention the main reason I am into racing now and that is my father he used to be a Harness Racing Driver drove against the likes of Peter Greig and Alan Donahue when the trots were big here in rocky I even got named after a horse he part owned and drove named Hal Peterson won a Green Brothers cup on him which was the biggest race in rocky at that time, Ofcourse these days the harness racing here has pretty much fallen right away around here they still do it bust just no croud at all remember it used to be packed every saturday night when I was a kid.

I remember watching a horse ruinning in the bush somewhere and notching up its 5th or 6th race win in a row. It finally came to melb and happened to be running at Flemington. Its name "Starcraft", Paying $35

They may not quite be Flemington, but I don't think Doomben and Eagle Farm qualify as "the bush". :D

Also regarding Paddy I seem to recall a post saying that he was finished here because of a few people who were causing dramas at the time and he never did return after that there was someone else at the sametime that was leaving who I can't seem to recall but they were both people who had been here long before I showed up here.

Hehe. Good call Sportz. The reason i threw in Bush was i had no recollection and couldn't be bothered researching his past few runs but all i remember seeing was a heap of 1's next to his name in form guide. I just assumed it was bush due to his odds of 35-1.

I remember it very well, because I backed him too, but I stupidly backed him on the Qld Tab. I was happy with the $20 I got until I saw what he paid down south.

Hi. First name Trent. Placid Ark was the 1st horse I ever backed. Play a bit of social footy (AFL) and cricket. Great bunch of fellas. Lived northern Perth suburbs most of my life but recently moved down to the Mandurah area. Work in the Perth CBD so a bit of travelling at the moment (listening to racing radio kills time most days) but will get better once the trains are running. Love going to the red hots, doggies and nags. Great for socialising. Had a tiny share in one of Miracle Mal’s syndicates. Nothing to show for the 1K investment. Mals resigned, syndicate folding, of 6 horses only 1 raced (1 start) before the demise. A few are racing in NT now, not sure where the others are. Won’t be rushing out to join another (racing) syndicate again but am contemplating part ownership some doggies (now I’m based in Mandurah).

My name is Glenn. I'm a forum member from the U.S.A. I am 55 years old, been playing horses for about 25 years now. Went to Vietnam in the military soon after graduating high school (1968) Married three times, (guess I'm no day at the beach) I have three sons and 9 grandchildren. My current wife is 7 years my junior. An environmental chemist since 1972, I "discovered" Australian horseracing on the internet two years ago, and have been playing Aussie tracks almost every night since then. I greatly appreciate the many
members here who have assisted me in learning how to bet Australian.

went to canterbury once. caught the train to the track the gates were 2 k's from the train so tramped to the entrance only to be passed by the courtesy bus half way round.
had a good day. liked the track. it was canterbury guineas day.unfortunately canterbury is downgraded these days to encourage better races to the major tracks. a group from down here in southern tasmania are taking caravans/trailers to the birdsville races this year. (non punters) but shows the interest that this event draws from all over.
good to know there are real people out there amongst the punting crowd.
i have a wife a postoffice and two girls with 7 grandchildren and they have become my favorite people for some reason.
keep up the good communications.

Just spotted this thread so here goes, real name John, 55,originally from Yorkshire UK; self employed, married twice, 3 big kids first time(3 grand kids), now my wife Linlin is 25 years my junior, HEE HEE! 2 kids .

First horse that I backed was Jay Trump (National winner) been hooked ever since, though in UK I was a "mad gambler" gut judgement only, many spectacular wins followed by many "unlucky" spectacular losses hahaha!

Now, a very controlled "investor" have been operating 2 plans for nearly 4 years , both in profit but but not enough selections to achieve my goal. Love to talk/swap systems my e-mail is lumbasakabayo@hotmail.com

Aaron, 19.

Currently I am a motorsport journalist, and have been for the past two years. Have had a couple of reports published in a greyhound magazine regarding Healesville. I used to be a parade steward there.

But my weekends are now taken up by the motorsport side of things (for example past 6 weekends have been at motorsport events reporting), and I also work for a radio program that is broadcasted to the web 24 hours a day 7 days a week (mind you its on loop all the time). revheadsreview.com.au

I am also a statistician for the Box Hill Hawks, and really enjoy that side of things. But im a sportaholic all in all.

Im certainly no full-time punter. Just punt when I have the time. I enjoy it because I enjoy being right.

My real name is Graeme, 45 and married with a fur child, a brown ****** that regards the wife and I as servants on call 24/7.It is all worth it as the mutt is very fond of us.
'Diogenes' comes from the frustration of a gullible romantic that has reached age 45 and had most of his illusions popped by that rain of daggers called life experience....and still clings to a sense of humour despite it all.
My first bet was in 1973...Kununurra race day and I had a whopping 20 bucks and watched the Gee Gee's thru the rails as they thundered past in red dust.
I had ten from Mum and ten from a bloke who often stayed at the motel Mum ran. I had drinks bought for me by friendly people all day and at the last race I went to the yard and saw a small grey horse with a frizzy bunch of top hair like a pineapple...he was jumping and kicking and going off a treat. My innocent view at 12 years old was that the horse was cute and full of beans....I now realise that was probably right on the money<wink>
The bookies had 'Bunchy Top' at 26 to one and on went the twenty I had.
Sat back on the rail and screamed myself hoarse as he charged home
(pun intended) past all these chestnut giants.
When I got home with my winnings Mum threw a fit and tore strips off me and made me promise not to bet anymore. It was 4 months average salary(I wonder where it all went lol?)
A year ago I started studying a bit of form in papers.
6 months ago I started wagering a bit, and beginners luck had me halfway to a new wheelchair and I was hooked.
Currently I calculate I have lost 2 wheelchairs and realise I have a long way to go....lol....so here I sit in my creaky one and am happy to have discovered this site....I need educating and the 'studying form' thread alone was a revelation as to the level of my ignorance!
I love the horses, and I hope to learn how to accurately assess races.
I would love to be able to make a life out of it, and am not convinced it is possible yet.
I live in Perth but have lived in Darwin,Sydney,Kununurra and the southwest of WA as well as Thailand and Japan.
Very nice to meet you all, great thread!

onya Graeme, yes we all seem to have started with a "WINNER" in my opinion it depends on what you are trying to do???? i.e. fun, occasional day out etc etc. I have found a niche where I'm comfortable and making a profit,.... the % profit is acceptable, BUT the next step is very very scary!!

Im Des ,32. Me old man has been into horse racing most of his life so thats how i got into the punt. First good win was on Juene in Melb Cup '94.. That was awesome watching it down the straight.... I love most sports and having a punt makes it more interesting.

I work in a factory for a quid... trying to pay off the house. Ive been off and on for years with the punt but now have been putting most of my time into it..

Foxtel is pretty much only on the Sport channels at my place..I now try to keep track on whats going on to date. I Dig FOXSPORTS NEWS channel.

Im still very amatuer but im learning as time goes... Ive had some nice wins in my time but i also know how it feels to be burnt.. but i love the rush of it overall... especially if its a close thrilling game...

To make a living out of it would be a dream... I dont know any professional punters but have been told stories about them..only good stories :)
My dream is to eventually replace day job with punting, pay off all debts etc... finally making enough to actually go overseas and watch the sport event you punt on....haha

Preferred sport to punt on: AFL
Fav Horse: Northerly
Fav Bet type: Multi
Preferred Chalk or Puppy: Chalk

I remember reading a few years back that most Millionairs in Australia are SELF made Miliionaires, and that a large % had been bankrupt at least ONCE, B4 making the big time.........makes you think doesn't it........ i.e. you have to have the "SPIRIT" to make it!!!

Also I particularly like "Bondies" analogy, "all" partnerships are "SINKING" ships,.........

Like most on paper millionaires. they never lifted a finger. It's called 'negative gearing'.

Like everything else, it has it's ying and yang. The yang bit is called a not-to-far-away recession, due to our artificial economy that's growth has been consumer led with a massive spending spree [of borrowed fake property value equity, called the ''debt semi-trailer'] led by the ying [negative gearing], put in place by Howard and co.
We have all been lulled into thinking everything is just peachy, while Howard's mates the property investors [they have all moved to Perth now thank God], get disgustingly rich!
