Arrived at the Track at Eagle Farm about 10ish,,bit early for drinking but hey its Cup day ,,to hot to be outside so we found our spot in the Straddie bar ,,good view of the races,,tote , bar , food , and bookies all close by,,and in the comfort of air conditioning.

After fielding calls from all the rellies and friends all morning (some i'm pretty sure i dont know) asking for a tip in the big race..they've some how got it into their heads i'm a tippping guru ?? still living off past glories like La Montagna and elsegundo :)
anyway my tip was Cest La Guerre e/w ,,better odds than Zipping so worth a go..

All the boys turn up at the track ,,about 6 of us..,,all asking for the big tips of the day ..not impresses when i say Hussenreign in Sydney (backed best flux) ,,,"where's the Melbourne and Brissie tips ??" ,,spent the next 1/2 hour explaining Melbourne was to open and to hard and Brissie was worse than a picnic esk meeting...

My advice have a few e/w's leave brissie alone and spend your money on the drink,,,not these guys,,these are the guys you see in the pub,,backing anything and everything,,cheering home anything that looks like winning the race and always leaving the bar broke..

They all pester me for a tip in the next at melbourne.,,,i'm seeing Aichi way to short and say Hips dont lie e/w worth a go,,likes the str8 and the new jockey might be all she needs...everyone in the bar seems to be on her,,(i'm getting nervous) and we cheer like crazy and she wins !! my next 5 shouts are covered !! maths is to hard but i think i'm drinking for the rest of the day free..

Theres only one of the group not on ,,we've nicknamed Da Vinci ,,hes got a piece of paper on him with numbers and letters all over it and it does remind me of the Da Vinci code,,,so hes not listening to anyone,,hes got his system and sticking with it,,

I tell them all to put there winning tickets in the pocket and only use them when you've got nothing left,,they dont listen and start backing everything,,even races that arent being televised,,the poor tote operater "Dorothy' gets pestered for results,,and now the boys have had a win they only go to her ,,supersticious lot ..

Melbourne comes around again ,,Marveen looks good value and the boys jump all over him,,,the place gets cheered down now as we've consumed a stack of bourbon by now..I'm a legend and thinking if i was home i'd be racking it in,,instead of the 10 e/ws i'm on here at the bar,,,,the boys are in fine form,,,having no luck in brissie no luck in dapto or wherever they are betting,,,but still ahead thanks to a couple of lucky wins in Melbourne..

The Cups turn,,,i'm asked what i'm on and say i've got a exotic with 4 horses on top and the 1/2 the field for 2nd and 3rd.."you cant cheer 4 horses home" and yep he mad sense..
I explain Old Vomits made me do a speed map and reckon Cest La guerre gets a good run,,and thats enough for me and a couple of mates to back it e/w..
the Cup hits the str8 and i yell here he comes,,they all assume i'm talking about Bauer and cheer him over the line to fail in the photo,,,i laugh and explain we got 3rd you idiots and were all happy with the $8 the place..

I'm feeling untouchable now and start picking 3 losers in a row..,they all say i've lost my mojo and leave me alone....then Hussenreigns race is on and i forget but watch him in the str8 i cheer him over the line,,the boys get up me for keeping it to myself even though i told them 20 bourbons ago,,,they say i'm trying to get a better price and dont beleive me when i tell them there $80 wouldnt make a difference..

Then a market comes up in Musselbrook,,,,Langfibian is $15 the win,,dont know why ?? hes a city place getter so i'm on...the race isnt televised so i ask Dorothy the tote lady to signal the result,,,and yes ,,Dorothy has the peace sign up and i'm a winner $50 e.w ,,,the boys are aaaaed,,they think Dorothy and i are rorting the system and they have been left out of the loop,,,so they pester poor Dorothy for the next winner,,,i tell them i'm only on $5 e.w ;)

In the meantime Da Vinci hasnt got a winner all day,,,has even borrowed money as his wife wouldnt let him bring the keycard,,,hes sad and quiet in the corner,,i feel sorry for him and say lets have a go in the last in Sydney for a trifecta,,,i like duke bongalonga (the boys just think i'm drunk and just like the name) lets put him in the with fave and put whatever you want in for 3rd,,,he puts in all the roughies,,aaaa its not his money,,i spot him $20 and another mate jumps in with $20 so we've got the tri for 200% .. the fave surges to the lead ,,old Duke flys home and we wait for the number for 3rd,,wooohoo its number 20 ,,we all go nuts ,,Da Vinci is running around hugging everyone,,even poor Shaun Berrigan ,,Dorothy comes out and gives him a hug and kiss on the cheek,,its bedlam,,and this even before the $1200 divie comes up,,,Woohoo X 2 ..

We all celebrate,,,Da Vinci i think has only broken even,,but hes a happy man,,,we collect our winning just as they are closing,,,i've got all my winning tickets in the pocket and go up last,,poor dorothy hasnt much cash left as shes already cleaned up the tray,,,i look at the tickets and notice i've got Annikov e/w aswell and i'm not telling the boys ,,,they'd kill me,,
dorothy has to pay me in some bundles of 20's and 10's unless i waited for the boss,,its still money so i dont care,,,i turn around with a big wad of cash ,,the boys think its all 100's and 50's and again think Dorothy and i have a aaaa going..

My shout for steaks at the breaky creek and a few lapdances at the local tittie joint,,,

Percentage wise probably the best day of the year for me,,,and the only race i studied was hussenreign's,,,and of course the MC .. ,,,, i got 4 big winners ,,and only now i'm asking myself why i didnt have trifectas on in these races ?? have to admit if i wasnt half wasted i probably would have found excuses not to back any of them..

Huge day and to be honest i had forgotton how much fun it is to cheers home the winners with your mates,,,sometimes on the computer your shopping for prices, on the phone and betfair ect that your start getting very clinical and you forget the thrill of racing and the whole reason you started the caper....

Tune in again next year where by that time,,Mav the legend of MC day would have won milllions and picked the card..(the boys love to exagerate) and i'll have the pressure on,,i'll actually do some form study and wont pick a winner all day ..

Hope you all had a good one :)

Great work man had to work for the 1st time in 5 years on cup day and had my worst one to boot pretty much broke even on the day with placings by Rendzina and C'est La Guerre would have loved to have seen Jewelled Gate win would have been huge for me as I had it for a win aswell as an all uper with the other 2 (it for the win and the other 2 for the place)

reminds me of the old days on the punt "in the betting shop" in the uk (years ago) betting from the "GUT" with a bit of caution to the wind!

just the odd day when everything seemed to turn to gold! like the day Athens Wood won the St. Ledger, Lester Piggot on Board, I went home with enough money to buy 2 houses,.......... if only I'd bought those 2 houses,? my entire life would have been different..... BUT you know I can't complain really!

I explain Old Vomits made me do a speed map and reckon Cest La guerre gets a good run

i think it would be wrong of me NOT to take all the credit for your success :p

i had a shocking cup (anyone who backed viewed doesn't deserve to get any money :D)

but i ended up well in front, backed annenkov which payed 15s, then just played duets for the rest of the day with a new system that seemed to work ok

I had to work so didn't have anywhere near as much fun as you did mav. It's good to hear a story like that, helps keep the optimism up.

I should have mentioned my best cup day was 2003 I amnot a big punter by any means but usually if I go to the track I bet bigger can work well if your winning obviously it works the other way if your not to. I managed to get a few winners only betting at Flemington that day from the local track getting Magic Tumbler 30 e/w at around $12, Leone Chiara $50 W at around $7, Light Sweeper $20 e/w at around $25 then I through $100 on Makybe Diva at $9 on track after that. We left the track and went to the pub and I thought I would go and have a bet on the last at ipswich (I think it was there long time ago now) and a horse by the name of Ode to Thee got up at $25 and I had $20 on it.

On a side note missed by the barest of margins on Super Impressive with $100 on at $9 the race after the cup was a huge day for me.

Sounds like a great day mav, had a similar one at eagle farm a few months back. Went with a couple of blokes from work, told them i had a few at decent odds, One $39 shot and a $34 shot as well as about 5 other winners i walked out about $600 up and the boys from work didnt follow me one step of the way. lol I had fun and i think they might bet with me next time.

Probably this melbourne cup day is the best win ive had on the punt so far though. Chucked in $20 each with a girl from work and another fella and we put a $6 boxed tri on every race in Melbourne. had a few bets myself, got rendzina for the place, had a win bet on Neroli. Backed Nom Du Jeu in the cup so no luck there, but had Ceste le Guerre e/w and had to put some money on Bauer for my gf so didnt walk away from the cup completely empty handed. The tris did nothing but got into work the next day and had managed to jag Viewed in the $5 sweep so the day didnt look to bad. On Thursday i got a call from the girl who i had the tri's on with, she asked if we had won anything on any of the tris. I said nope and she said to check the sms she sent me with all the bets in it. Check out MR8 in particular, i checked and she had 2 5 6. I still had the old formguide in the bin at work so pulled it out and said oh you typed it in wrong i chose 16. Yep she put the bets on in her tab account and forgot to hit the 1. $895 each later we were all pretty happy about the mistake and drinking it up at the wello during lunch today ;) Had a nice little e/w bet on Nellie got there with it this arvo as well.

My favourite Melbourne Cup was in (I think) 1990 when Kingston Rule won. I didn't know anything about punting then. A good mate and I went flyfishing for trout (my passion back then) that day near Nimmitabel, on the Monaro in southern NSW. Being November, it was warming up and the trout were chasing mayflies. We caught a couple in the morning on the dry fly and then went to the Nimmitabel pub to watch the race. My horse didn't win but my friend won about $500 that and and he later used that money to buy a new flyrod. My mate and I enjoyed cheering home the winner and after a few schooners we went back to the river and there was a great hatch of mayflies happening and we had some great fun stalking and catching one fish each, about 1.5lb or so.

I guess the point of this story is that going to the races, and fishing for that matter, is much more about catching fish or winning money (although each puts a big smile on your face); its about having fun with your mates, enjoying the experience and being lucky enough to indulge in a passion that you love.

Firstly I'll say I didnt back viewed even tho mav mentioned its CCup run
Couldnt believe the amount of once a year punters who boxed Profound Beauty,Madrush and Septimus(if that tri would have come in it would have paid about $20 LOL)(power of the media?)
I did back cest la guerre each way
I backed Glyn Schofield EW in the Syd jockeys $8.50 on fixed (nice collect)
was very aaaaed and started throwing money around
boxed 5 dogs in a meadows race and jagged a 33-1 shot for a $833 tri LOL
Bought a hamburger on the way home and was in bed snoring by 730 LOL
Yesterday was weird..couldnt take a trick early including not backing Swick who I'm always on down the flemington straight
Anyway got a few small exactas and took the shorts on MARASCO then a $600 tri in Perth followed by a winner at Albion park at $4 so i've gone to the handy bank on tuesday haven't been since and still have double my original bank
