PAUL Hammersley has come a long way since he first arrived on the Gold Coast as an unknown 16-year-old apprentice.
It didn't take long for Hammersley to become a well-known face at the Gold Coast, shooting to the top of the apprentices' premiership.
He shocked the racing world when he booted home Mon Mekki to win the 2002 Queensland Oaks and used that success as a springboard to establishing himself as one of state's most consistent riders.
Today, Hammersley gets a chance to write another chapter in his success story.
On the track he knows so well, Hammersley has been given the difficult task of navigating a path to glory aboard the Bruce Hill-trained Startsmeup, which will start from close to the outside of the 16-horse field in the Magic Millions Classic.
