Northerly ?? dreams sometimes come true..
Delzao will be the one I'm keeping an eye on..

Hope they don't even try. I hate it when they try to get these champions back to the track after a long break. They're normally nowhere near as good as they were and it takes away from their previous performances. It would be BRILLIANT if Northerly could come back as good as he was, but that's highly unlikely.

yes they can jam there 12/1 where it fits, great horse, terrible value.

10th August 2004, 04:56 PM
i, for the life of me couldn't see starcraft or private steer out of the top three places...i'm tending to lean towards alinghi and delzao for outside chances also
Looks like my early picks are turning out to be good ones!!!

There is a very recent interview given to Greg Irvine by Northerly's trainer Fred Kersley.
Kersley is frank and open regarding the horses condition and his future plans for him.
This guy loves Northerly and if the horse shows any indication of being unsound, or lacks interest in racing he will be retired immediately.
The interview is currently available online and makes worthwhile reading.

I know it is early but I for one would be very surprised if Starcraft doesnot go very very close to winning this race I think he is the best horse in Australia right now.
Who knows what might happen over the next couple of months but he is an amazing talent and I think he is the best horse I have seen.
Delzao I think is a great chance he has been right there with Starcraft in most of there races I just wonder whether he has that brilliance to beat him time will tell like I said it is way way early.
If Rakti is here it is a huge danger haven't seen alot of the horse but I have heard some enormous wraps on it other than that I would love to see Fastnet Rock in the field aswell.

Totally agree with the comments on Starcraft, think this is his race IF he comes up this time in.Look at Dance Hero last week, has he come back as good?Only time will tell.Certainly wouldn't sack him on that run, maybe he has remained at the same level and Charge Forward and Fastnet Rock have improved enough to enable them to be on level terms with him.Dont like Fastnet Rock racing in bandages though, seems to indicate some kind of feet problems.Hope I'm wrong.

Starcraft showed us all how amazing he is, however i think if there is one track that will undo him it will be Mooney Valley the tight corners and short straight tend to suit the front runners and he may need luck because he gets so far back in his races (i say the same for private steer). I'm not saying they cant win but i would prefer something that will lead or sit just of them like Grand Armee who is a proven Group 1 performer who's last start was a terrific 6 length win over the mighty Lohnro in the Queen Elizabeth, over 2000 (close enough to cox plate distance).
Cheers ED

Exhibition gallop completed by Northerly today at Belmont. Due to return to racing 28th this month!!
Await to hear how he pulls up.

12th August 2004, 10:50 AM
Northerly has received a veterinary steward's clearance to resume racing.
Returning in either the Farnley Stakes (1400m), on August 28, or Saturday week's weight-for-age Goodwood Sprint (1300m).

very keen on grand armee for early bets. cant go past lonhro form, anywhere but moonee valley that is
mug punta
15th August 2004, 07:42 PM
grand armee was a nice win beating Lonhro, and the Valley is the perfect track for that horse, but, they ran that race at a farcical pace so it's not a reliable form pointer. However, he does look a pretty safe each way bet at$9

I'd be very wary of backing a Gai horse in melbourne. Dance hero wants no further than 1400m imo. Northerly if comes back right, is my tip. Niello looks suited and you can't go past starcraft. All of the horses are under the odds at this stage of their preps.

Grand Armee is a very good horse, but IMO not up to a Cox Plate.Don't think for one minute he will such a soft lead again.Agree about Starcraft & Private Steer not being suited to the Valley with it,s short straight, but think their experienced hoops will be a wake up to this and make their moves well before entering the straight.

I didn't think Fields of Omagh was up to a Cox Plate he is one of the biggest cats i've seen (actually a v good horse but i hate it). However once they're in the stalls its just like any other race and roughies do get up. I'm sure the Jockeys will start their runs on the backmarkers early however this in turn forces them to go very wide into the straight this is where the leading pack can pinch a break and a lot of the time its a racewinning one.

Don't forget though MrEd, that this time there is No Sunline charging for home 1000m out getting all the horses of the bit. To me last years race was a furphy, I hate Bryan Martins horse also and the track was terrible that day.
I see 2 likely scenarios at this stage
Either Grand Armee will get a soft run in front and pinch a cox plate or Grand Armee will be pounded allowing for the probable best horse in the race, Starcraft, to round 'em up. He has the swiftest sprint i've seen on a middle distance horse for a long time, so I disagree when people say the Valley wont suit him.
With the Valley's high camber if you make ur run about 6-800 out, you can reach full momentum on the corner and then simply say tata to the rest of the field

going for a bit of early value with Rakti e/w@ $15 already backed Starcraft a while back @ $5.50.Don't think Private Steer can win this, and certainly not getting caught in the hype surrounding Alinghi.

Good to hear that Private Steer is back on track and fully recovered from that injury she sustained after being kicked by a stablemate. Reported she had a strong track gallop at Moonee Valley on Saturday morning.

There are but 2 horses that I currently see out there right now that I believe could beat Starcraft in the Cox plate that is Elvstroem and the import Paolini I actually would have given a chance to Balmuse but he doesn't seem to be in it for some reason considering the Kelt was automatic qualification. I think he is by far the best horse in NZ impresses everytime he goes out.

From all reports yea Our Egytian Raine will run and no I wouldn't rate it much hope at all flat out beating an average field there yesterday over 1400m thrashed by Desert War over 1600m and we all saw where it finished yesterday with no aparent excuses so going on that it has no hope whatsoever.

MV should suit over the 2040M if can get an easy run otherwise there is doubt over the distance imo.
Mr ed

I dont think she has a realistic chance of winning, she looked like she didn't get the 1600 of the epsom and now they want to run over 2040 in the hardest race we have to offer.

Corey Brown has been booked to ride Our Egyptian Raine in the Cox, so I guess question 1 is answered.
As for question 2, have to agree with previous posts. 1400M and below suits this mare best and I can’t see her getting a cushy run in the Cox with the talent involved.

Well if you listen to Graeme Rogerson it sounds like a absolute certainty. He rates Savabeel well above Enconsul and Cedar Manor and it looks as if the 2040 will suit perfectly. Meets them with 48.5 and could just take all the running down in the world.

Over the space of a few hours and with some though I have knocked out Regal Roller (for now) as I think he will go out too strong too early and be gone before the final 200m. Not that I want to I love Regal Roller.
I have also looked at Elegant Fashion's Hong Kong Form and it is pretty impressive. 15 placings of 17 starts in the last two years including 7 placings at 2000m (1st:2, 2nd:3, 3rd:2). It was be interesting to see how it handles the Moonee Valley track

I love the fact that Starcraft drew one barrier where a few people have thought that it wasn't that great I thought it was perfect. Atleast from one barrier he just has to settle not get all the way across from a wide barrier where he could end up dead last settling I do not think he will get that far back probably just off midfield.
I am getting more and more excited about his chances in this I truly think there is one horse that can beat him and that is Elvstroem other than that I just don't feel they are quite there with them.

Flattered big time.
Like I said, don't know the front end of a horse from the rear.
Just know what I know and the best horses win the best race.
Have picked Arwon,What a nuisance and possibly a couple of others.
But when a horse like Black Knight wins a Melbourne Cup,I lose a bit of respect for the race.
You only need a horse that has stamina, not to be the grit and determination that real champions show.
Of course horses like Makybe Diva appear to have both, but if he was a true champion he would have got Elvstroem on the line.
Like to see one of those pommie horses win a Cox Plate.
Ain't gonna happen coz they ain't the champions they are made out to be.
Only stamina.

If you back Elvstroem you will do your dough. It won't run a place.Horses that win Cox Plates are set specifically THAT race, and do not come via the Caulfield Cup.I have a high opinion of this horse as my previous posts will vindicate, even when I kept tipping it last time in ,and a certain poster kept calling it a cat.The 2 horses that have been specifically aimed at this race are FOO and Starcraft, and to a lesser extent Grand Armee. They are the only REAL chances, unless you care to listen to G.Rodgerson regards Savabeel.IMO Starcraft is a lay down misere, just depends on the ride.

Gday All...
Sticking my neck out here so it will probably get chopped. Ah well thats racing tho..
I think Starcraft is over rated and consequently over bet. It may well win the Plate but not with my money. When Elegant Fashion was running around here I made nice money on her, and I see no need to jump off. I would have thought Elvis was a special but for the going back in distance. Gai has done the right thing with Grand Armee and kept a low profile. As another poster mentioned Our Egyptian Raine hsn't been mentioned, she won well last week and is a good chance a place. The unkown is Paolini. Summing up I like:
10 Elegant Fashion
6 Elvstroem
11 Our Egyptian Raine
1 Grand Armee
with the rider of watch Paolini.
having said that I could very well miss the winner, it is a verey difficult race.

Well churchy we are on different wave lengths again. I dont know how you give Our Egyptian Raine any hope but good luck to ya. He'll probly come out and do a PICKETT!!
I only think there are 3 winning hopes
1- Elvestrom. With so much pace in the race this will be a war of attrition. Any horse that is a bit of a squib will be found out.
That was a gutsy win last week, and most horses would have let Makybe go straight past them.
2- Elegant Fashion. world class, loves the 200om. Has been set ONLY for this race by a super trainer.
3- Starcraft. The up and comer. Just a bit concerned that he isnt quite a 2000m horse. Dont worry about all this rubbish that he will get to far back. Boss is a super rider and will put him into the race, no problems, but I just wonder if the last 200 is a knock em down war that he can go past Elvestrom
For my tri's I will be throwing in Regal Roller, flying but will struggle the last 200m to hold on.
Savabeel, who may run ok with the light weight.
Grand Armee, may plug on for the place but I dont think can win.
Roughie is Natural Blitz but only if the rain has not come by that stage.
Good luck to all having a bet.

Have change my selection now to

With all the talk of a speed battle, most jockeys are saying that they will sit back and swoop at the end. If Regal Roller can get a soft lead, with the rest watching each other, he might just be able to pinch this. We'll know after about 600m.

For those tipping Regal Roller, don't forget Miss Potential is in the race. RR will be wishing he was back running a cushy 1400-1600 at Caulfield as they pass the school at MV. Sprinter milers simply never win this race.
Either Starcraft or Grand Armee should win with Paolini a smoky.

I just cannot rate any of those horses with Savabeel winning that race sorry but that is average we are talking about a horse that barely beat an average field in sydney last start I love Starcraft but he isnot that great got a good run but was not good enough none of them were. All I can say is that this makes horse racing here in australia look extremely average.

I think you're right Raw.
I don't like to bag our Racing but I backed Savabeel in the Champion Stks but gave him no hope today. I guess the 9.5kg FOO had to give him told in the straight.
Also, the fields were average today.
Best fields this Spring were on Caulfield Guineas day.

i just cant see how the jockey on elvstroum could let him get so far back, he led all the way in the caulfield cup (2400m) why couldnt he be leading or atleast mid field in todays race (2040m), he was basically at the tail with no chance..........
although i did see him begin to fly down the outside only to be blocked by the jockey wearing orange colours..........
still im a little poorer tonight, and very dissapointed

i think you are all being to hard on starcraft..he had no room at all couldnt even get started he's a big horse that got the worst barrier he could get...he did well to finish 3rd..
Savabeel had the best run ....FOO wasnt in the form he was last year .

Dead on jimmy_c,
Elvstroem was never given a chance to be in the finish. Jumped a little awkwardly and was settled close to the rear, you don't want to be at the rear on the home turn in a Cox Plate - what were they thinking?

Savabeel's win as a 3yr old just showed what a weak field the Cox Plate had and the hype about Starcraft is just that, hype. I doubt the horse will ever win in the Melb. way of going and seems a very over rated horse. Can't believe the bookie's didn't jump all over the owner's $1 mil. bet for the 5/1 he wanted.
Backed Savabeel to win [and in the comp] but left the rest of the races at the Valley alone. It's a bit of a dog track and I think you have got to look for track specialists and keep away from back markers to win at the Valley.
Bomber Bill's easy as you please win as a 9yr. old was a pointer to how weak these so called 'Group' spring races are becoming. Some of these runners are coming from night meetings and even a couple of first time city starters.

He already has Crash. He did that at his first run in Melbourne.

Hi Sportz. Thanks for the correction, but I was thinking about the big races here and his failure in the Yallumba getting a long way back suggested a loser in the Cox. A horse has to race on the pace in this race.
Starcraft's NZ group wins [and failures there to] aren't anything to brag about and nor is 9 wins from 17 starts. NZ group races [most group 1 races there have prize pools of less than $175,000] hardly match up to Group races here, although I think our group standard is on a downward spiral.

Starcraft just showed yesterday he is not even close to a 2000m horse and quite honestly after seeing the race again Paolini was the only horse I could make an excuse for wide almost all the way and I think he stuck on fairly well.
Jus heard that they are now planning to spell Starcraft and he will not run past a mile again he will be hard to beat at that range regardless what he did yesterday he is still a good horse at the sprint range.

thought it a great win and masterful ride.
munce occuplied the spot that starcraft should have pursued from barrier one.
on the pace and move at the turn in the cox plate.
great run by fields of omagh. starcraft was a good effort.
surprised at the way grand armee was off the pace.
he is better than that.
a good race. certainly not as disappointing as some would have it.
rogerson told us his horse was a champion. wonder he has to do to convince us.
(i did have something on him)
(took his word for it)

Gonna do a "rogie"mouth off here....
I noyiced that nearly everyone on this thread put Elvstroem in somewhere. If you read my post on page 6 you will see I declared it could not win,and tipped 4 horses which where IMO the only real chances.
I got the winner quinella 10 times,trifecta5 times and the first4@1 unit. All in all a BIG day for me.Yes,I'm CROWING.GOYOUGOODTHING!!!
The only bet I lost was $100 on Starcraft.

Just curious purpleheart 68
with those trifecta bets and first four did you box them or do standouts
If so what did it cost, because by my calculations you cleaned up around $9 g's

Disappointed the Big Fella couldn't sprint quicker than he did the last 200m, although that's not really his go; a good effort to get as close as he did in the finish.
The most curious thing for me to come out of the race was the number of poor rides. If you backed Elegant Fashion and thought you were a bit stiff in the straight; you're right. Problem with that thought is; she never should have been where she was in the first place! At the 1000m when Munce knew he had to move on Zavabeel (and did), should have sounded the alarm bells in G.Mosse's head. His next move is to do nothing! He sits inside a sprinter, OER and behind a miler, Regal Roller, unbelievable! It was the picture perfect advertisement for local jockeys you'll ever see.
The only two jockeys to leave their settled positions first, were the first two past the post; great rides by both Munce and Nikolic. Of the others, Boss on Starcraft and those directly behind him on the rail could do nothing until someone else first created pace or space and neither ever eventuated. Paolini caught 3 wide the entire trip proved nothing else but nuisance value although no jockey in the 1 wide lane endeavoured to improve their position until it was all too late. Rawiller on Elvstroem was just plain stiff. Missed the jump, angles for a trail at the rear with no resultant pace, baulked for a run at the top of the straight; a neither here nor there result for both connections and backers.

good analysis Dunda,
agree with all of them.
Also, Grand Armee was inconvenienced by Elegant Fashion early causing him to lose his position and get further back than expected (I expected him to box seat).
Delzao made up late ground, not sure if was just passing tired horses or that was looking for further, as it looked like he was out-sprinted down the side.

oliver's ride was a shocker. rode grand armee upside down. would have won if ridden correctly.
