Centre Fire seemed never in doubt and ran a course record at Scone today. Very unusual to find the Betfair favorite different to the S-Tab one. Charlie Won't was the clear S-Tab while Betfair was offering well over the odds on Charlie Won't. While the odds offered on Centre Fire were much slimmer on Betfair. Well, as we've all seen, Charlie Didn't, and Centre Fire won easily. The information Betfair offers us punters is second to none, and the beauty is you don't even need to be a member to see what's happening. You virtually get to see every bet being placed on what horse in real time. Simply go to global.betfair.com and once you get to the race your interested in, simply click on the horse's name to see the action for that horse. Can't ever see our own TAB's, or should I say ultimately the only TAB in Aust every bothering to offer such valuable information to their customers. Given that eventually one TAB will have an Aust-Wide monopoly why would they bother?
Seems us customers have no hope here. Ever seen an example of a monopoly working for it's customers - ever!! A contradiction in terms.
Yet, this situation has not only been allowed to develop, but aided and abetted by our state governments who are naturally one of the largest beneficiaries of this monopoly.
Look into the background of one of the greatest swindles in Australian history - the Tattersalls swindle - the descendants of the TAS Premier and many other politicians descendants no doubt continue to still reap enormous rewards. Of course, privacy legislation prevents us knowing who those beneficiaries were or are, even nearly 100 years later.
We're told this prevents us from corruption, as NSW and WA constituents are told they will be protected from corruption by the banning of Betfair in their states. And, I believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy too!
I believe that Mark Read had his NSW TAB account cancelled. When there is only one TAB in this country, heaven help you if you're winning consistently. Don't be surprised if you get a letter saying "Your account has been cancelled as we're looking for recreational punters only".
We can't sit back and let this happen, but what can we do? TAB's are huge advertisers in our largely monopolistic media. My own letters to various Editor's expressing my concerns haven't been published yet, and appear unlikely to be.
But, if we as punters simply sit back and do nothing then we deserve the fate that awaits us.
