Say i was using the newspaper for my prices and there were some scratchings....how could i re-price the field to get an accurate price....for example say in the first three lines of betting you had
Fav $3
2nd fav $5
3rd Fav $6.50

and then the fav was scratched the second fav would not stay at $5 how would i know what price it should be as well as the changes to the other runners.

What I would do is turn the prices for the full field into percentages in the time honoured way (I'm pretty sure you know how to do that - same way VFG adds the percentages up at the bottom of each race).
Remove the horses that are scratched and redistribute the percentages proportionately between those left. For e.g. if you start with three horses at 50%, 25% and 25% and one of the 25 percenters is scratched you have two left at 50% and 25% which now share the 100% between them so they become 66% and 33%.
Then turn those percents back into the new odds (in the reverse time honoured way).

Apologies for a non detailed work through but short of time and I know you with your level of expertise will cope with this.

I think that works like this...correct me if i am wrong
a) 33%
b) 25%
c) 25%
d) 15%
e) 10%
f) 10%
= 118% tab prices

A) is scratched so we add up the remaining percentages and get
a) scr
b) 25%
c) 25%
d) 15%
e) 10%
f) 10%
= 85% tab prices

then divide the above percentages in to 85% to get the final percentages
b) 29.4%
c) 29.4%
d) 17.6%
e) 11.7%
f) 11.7%

when converting these back to prices should i use the 85% or 100% this is part i am not sure of.

I would then multiply each original price by 118 / 85 to give a market of 118% again (might as well end up with a market framed to the same percentage as you started with). This would give:

b) 35%
c) 35%
d) 21%
e) 14%
f) 14%

Then convert back to prices.

Amazing what you can find if you know where to look. Wish I'd known, so I wouldn't have had to knock up something for myself. It's attached if you're interested. I entered the pre-post prices from my local catbox-liner for yesterday's Winter Challenge Final. 155%! Deleting the original prices for the scratchings gives the revised prices for the remainder. The desired market percentage is manually entered (F1). For the purposes of this, I entered the original 155% from C27.

Cheers,

H.
