Here's a system I came up with during my form study.

Take the first 5 in the betting then apply the following.

1. Must be in the top 5 in average earnings.
2. Must have won at the distance at the course of the days meeting. E.G. If the meeting is at Rosehill -- it must have won at the distance +/- 100 metres.
3. Must be trained by one of the top 5 trainers.
4. Must be ridden by one of the top jockeys.
5. Must have finished 1st 0r 2nd in last 2 starts.
6. Must have raced in the last 28 days.

What do you think?

Sounds good Mad G,

Have you a database that you can test it on?
Run a test and see what figures it spits out at you. If the figures are to your satisfaction I'd suggest you follow it on paper for a while or perhaps place very small wagers on it. Just off the top of my head you may well be dealing with shorter priced Nags, not a certainty however do not forget to check the class of previous wins to be sure if price seems extraordinarily long. Systems are not the complete answer and some fall over or at the very least go through rough patches and may need some fine tuning. Don't despair and stick with it.
