i dont think the discussion is going well with tvn-sky.
my prognosis is that when it comes on it will cost $50 a month extra those on foxtel getting it for $12 a year best count their blessings as i cant see it lasting.
the game will be how much can tvn get for its product.

did anyone else see the article a couple of weeks back about something being worked out. basically from what i remember it was something to do with mooney valley saying they couldnt afford to keep funding the channell and they would be pulling the pin on it.

What about those of us without Foxtel I mean this is friggin ridiculos the way I see it I will never see any decent vision of Sydney and Melbourne racing again I can get it on Bigpond because I have broadband but half of the time it is a waste of time even turning it on I certainly wouldn't pay a cent for the service simply because it is nothing short of total crap.
These greedy pigs need to get there crap together and get it sorted out I don't particularly care who is and who isn't missing out on there end if something isn't done soon they won't need to worry about it they will lose so many punters and fans of the sport in QLD and other areas simply because they have shown little respect or care for our needs up here.
I for one am fed up with the whole deal there has supposed to of been a solution on the table ready to go for months now and things seem no closer now to being worked out than they were the day the things were split.
Why would someone want to own a horse they cannot even see run and lets face it most people who want to own a horse regardless of where they live want to own one racing in the biggest part of the industry Sydney and Melbourne makes it awful hard to follow if you cannot see anything.

following what seemed to be a successful magic millions meeting and sales and good racing in queensland on sky it is contrasting to look at sydney racing where the highest prizemoney exists on day to day racing and to see it in such poor shape.
generally i would not pay to watch sydney racing if tvn comes on to austar. which leaves me to decide if i would pay extra for melbourne racing.
i doubt it.
this issue has seriously damaged racing in the eyes of punters.
i have said before it is hazardous for the public when governments give support to corporate monopolies such as tabcorp.
it is in nsw and vic govts interest for tabcorp to do well. but it leads to them dictating to an industry they do not own.
personally i dont want to be part of that.
either vic nsw racing comes back on to austar at the current cost or i will not be subsribing to watch it.
i am sure i can still listen to it on the radio or will someone try and interfere with that too.
i think someone should put the racing industry on suicide watch as it not something you would want to be too close to at the moment.

I agree to an extent Topsy however I love watching Melbourne racing for the most part so depending on the cost I maybe interested in forking out a little extra for the TVN service or whatever happens. However I amnot willing to go and fork out $50 or anything close to that infact if it comes to that I may just give the whole game away that is about how sick to death I am of this situation, I am a punter who likes to be able to see what he is betting on and if the cost of that service becomes to much then to be quite honest they can jam the whole thing.
I love being able to see the horses and cannot see a legitimate reason why this crap has gone on for so long in the end it just gives you an idea of how little they value customers outside of there proximity.

Can you get this service via broadband?

IMO i don't think any TAB or Gov' in this country, especially the NSW Gov' , cares two hoots what you or i see or don't see as long as the BOTTOM LINE ,ie dollars coming in are maintained.
as with everything associated with Gov' control in this country, foresight is not a prerequisite for being in control of it.
i am one who refuses to pay the day light robbery charges from Foxtel so the radio will do me fine, after all, thats how i started and i can see even in this technological wonderous age that this is the way it will finish and i'm only 48yrs old so still a way to go yet,i hope.
have given up on the capitolists!!!

Ade you can get a free service from Bigpond if you are a Bigpond broadband user if not I amnot sure if you can actually pay for the service or not but my advice would be stay away from it, if the free service is anything like the pay version they would have to pay me to use it far to choppy and not very clear at all.

I wonder if they would consider selling the pictures to an independent third party. I for one prefer to view and review the nags i am betting on and find i can do so much more effectively if i can see their last couple of runs. Then again would an enterprising person even be bothered dealing with the pack of idiots at the controls at the moment. Wonder if it would even be viable, hmmmm....

MAD, i think if you subscribe to the tvn website which is about $15 or $20 a month u can download as many races as you want as long as they were run in sydney or melbourne.

I have not realy checked out what they are showing but if you have a NSW tab account they have a free service to watch races

Thanks Horse and Shaun.
Horse, i do subscribe to TVN but find it rather limited as it only covers metro races in Sydney and Melbourne. Would love something more detailed or perhaps i should avoid punting on everything.
Shaun, thanks for that. I wasn't aware they (NSW TAB) provided any of those services. I'll check it out.

If I lived IN australia and wanted to see every metro race on Tv, pay or otherwise, which service is providing the best coverage at the moment?
Also, are there any Satellite tv options? has anyone looked right into this? Is it possible that some overseas satellite tv such as Dubai etc may be getting Australian racing coverage that could be received in Australia free to air if someone had a sat receiver? (Dubai can be received in Australasia on sat.).
With the australian tv beaming into bali etc, and other countries possibly taking feeds from Sky etc, has anyone found anything useful?
This could also apply to Australian rules matches etc.
One example is that the Grand prix can be viewed down under live via satellite free to air I'm told...
Any input gratefully appreciated
Cheers

Good points w924. To be honest it is something i have thought of but in relation to other sporting events. How much do you know about these big satellite receivers? Can you get American sports through this system? I might look into a little more on Monday.

I wish it was available on FTA.
w924
3rd February 2006, 07:36 PM
well there are some stations overseas that pay for feeds and then broadcast them FTA...we may get lucky and find this with Australian racing...it is very possible..
AS an aside, here in NZ you would probably be amazed at which races we get live from Australia...Port Lincoln is just one example...sure we dont get every race..but we might get 3 from there on a weekday meet....only the ones in OZ that fit in in between our NZ racing, incl greyhounds, and trots. Now if Only Australia had what we have on FTA..a dedicated racing channel...its pretty awesome really..its just that I dont like NZ racing LOL
These races come mainly from Sky oz ( I think) and probably also TVN and via sky NZ and then FTA on our national racing Tv channel.. not sure exactly..but we do get Sky OZ pre race comments at times...yep I know its pretty good to have a national FTA racing channel..all we need now is to have every metro OZ race..esp Saturdays...but that will never happen.
What I am getting to here that there is a very real possibility that an American channel is getting better Australian racing coverage than you are..or perhaps your Indonesian neighbours, Or Norfolk Island...you get the drift...If you can found out who and where and how, then a 1 m dish or slightly larger, and a receiver (either a box or PC card) may be all you need.
Mad, there are some websites that give the rundown on what is avail to receive..its not really rocket science..we just have to ascertain which channels at which times can give us what we are looking 4. I am yet to find an article on this subject from a horse racing perspective...somebody somewhere must have been down this road...
This may be all possible without resorting to getting a card copied illegally..There are cards out there that supposedly can take pay Sky etc..but it is an arena I do not wish to enter.
I have seriously thought of subscribing to TVN from here in NZ, but dont know itrf its possible, and also if its worthwile... I do know that Sky offers expats a service at special rates..but I dont know if that is Sky Oz, NZ, Uk or what lol
http://www.micronica.com.au/catalog/satellite/
http://www.hooktech.co.nz/ a nz site but it does have a great list of world stations and which band they are on...gives a comprehensive list of OZ channels..
Well that is something to chew on...i look fwd to anything anyone can come up with.

I am about to get a new mobile phone and noticed through the 3 network you can get sky racing on the phone for about $7 a month. Has anyone seen this? Surely the small screen size would make it difficult to view the races at an optimum level. If I go with this product I may get it as it would be handy especially when on the move.

i have given the matter some thought and have decided that if tvn is offered to me at a price (any price) i will cancel my austar connection altogether and save $100 per month and do my racing on the internet on The Tote service on which is a useful site.
apart from Seinfeld and hogans heroes austar does not have much to officer other than the races and if the impasse continues i will save myself a lot of bother and go back to where i was.

Gday pug,
I have had sky on my phone for the last few months and couldnt do without it now. I am often out and about and although it is not the clearest picture of all time, I can still follow the horse I've backed quite easily. With the hands free on the go, you never miss a race.

if anyone saw racing retro on sunday, one of the guys (i think from the melbourne studio) said there will be some sort of agreement done up within the next 14 days.

I saw Racing Retro this week and Andrew Bensley did say there will be a deal done within the next 2 weeks but he also said the week before that a deal should be done that week aswell so lets not get to excited. From what I have heard and read something has been close for quite awhile now but they cannot agree completely which somewhat says to me that maybe something isn't going to be done.

the issue is set for court in may 22 2006 due to tabcorp refusing to allow the austar having the same arrangement as foxtel.
it appears that tabcorp is the problem in the issue.
it is probably trying to stretch tvn's finances.
one offer from tvn was that tvn do the telecasting and that sky be the betting channel but this will be subject to the accc accepting them working in unison.
i cant see how a court hearing can resolve it and i think it is a dead duck.

Is this sky racing on 3 mobile available on plan or prepaid accounts?
Is it exactly the same as the coverage you get from Foxtel/TAB stores?

Ade,
I would say that it is available on both pre paid and plans, its a service that 3 offer. Yes it is exactly what you see at the pubs, foxtel etc its sky racing. In regards to phone selection, i guess the bigger the screen the better. I have a NEC and it works fine.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info.
I might get a Nokia 7600, I'll mostly only use a 3G phone for Sky racing and other sport. I don't want to be locked into an 24-month contract when sky racing could be pulled at any moment.
Would the 7600 work with Planet 3? What model phone is that NEC?
Thanks mate.

3 mobile sky racing screen quality is appalling.

mr quaddie i think its only as good as the screen can handle on your phone.
at the end of the day if im near a tv ill watch that, if im out and want to watch the race and have the choice between radio and watching it on my phone i know which ill take.
