Autumn Fantasy comp

Okay, I need people to start signing up for this now, so that I know exactly how many people want to be involved and I can start organising things.

I usually like to make each comp a little different to the last one, to keep people interested. This time however, I intend to make a pretty big change. If possible, I'm going to arrange it so that only ONE person can "own" each individual horse. Say for example you had the Doncaster winner in your stable, then you would be the only one in the whole competition with that horse. I think this will make it very interesting. One point though. You may have to come on this site fairly regularly during January in order to be able to choose your stable. I'm not completely sure about that. I still have to work a few things out in that regard. I will try to make it as simple for everyone as I can. But in any case, I think it should make choosing stables pretty exciting anyway.


So please tell me if you want to have a go. Deadline to sign up is December 31.

If it means anything i am willing to let you have Number 1 pick in reward for time and effort throughout competition, but thats just me. No idea how you work out an order from No. 2 onwards.

It will certainly be a draft type of thing, but I think the sort of trades you're talking about could perhaps make it a bit too confusing.

I will be deciding the order by simply drawing out of a hat, but I will make it completely fair to everyone by dividing the horses into different groups. For example, the person who gets first choice of the horses in one group will get last pick of horses in another group. That sort of thing.

If possible, I'd like to get at least 12 people involved. Preferably more.

I've decided that if I can, I'll try to organise an "auction" or "sale" type situation so we could buy the very best horses. Then there'll be a "draft" to choose the rest. People who miss out in the auction will get first choice in the draft. I think this will make it very interesting. Choosing a stable may be even more exciting than the competition itself. :)

I'd like you to tell me how regularly you come on this site, and what time or what day you're most likely to use it. If we're going to have an auction, I have to make sure that everyone's got an opportunity to get a winning bid in for the horses. I'm thinking of closing off the auctions at say 8 o'clock at night, or something like that. Would that suit everyone?

But basically, it will work like this. In January, we'll choose our initial stable of around 10-12 horses. There will also be two further trading periods in the comp where we will add a couple more horses (before the Blue Diamond and before the Golden Slipper). Anyway, the person whose stable of horses has earned the highest amount of total prizemoney in the period from January 26 to April 14 will be the winner.

Not quite sure what the problem is, Crash.

We choose a stable of horses we think will earn the most prizemoney during the Autumn. You wouldn't really want to choose some horse that isn't likely to run in any of the big feature races. We are looking to snare the winners of big feature races like the Australian Cup, Australian Guineas, Golden Slipper, BMW, AJC Derby, Doncaster etc etc. And if we can't get the winner, then we're trying to find the placegetters of these big races. Basically it's just crystal ball stuff trying to predict which horses are going to race well in the big races during the Autumn.

And yes, luck does play a part with certain horses being injured or retired or whatever. But that's half of the fun.

Did you read my earlier post at the top of this page?

I'm going to use an "auction" type principle for selecting the top horses. If someone is extra keen to buy one of the top horses, then they can always outbid everyone else and buy that horse. Of course, that'll probably mean they have less left in their salary cap for other horses. So it all evens out in the end. The "draft" type situation is for choosing all the remaining horses in the stable and I will arrange it so that people who missed out in the auction will get first pick in the draft. All in all, I think it'll be very interesting.

Its basically the same as the fantasy football comps that are run during the football season. I know they run one on the afl, where you choose a team of players (can be from any of the teams in the comp), and you can sub different players at different stages of the year. Goals and stats equate to points. If a player gets injured your not gunna get any points. So like sportz said, luck plays a big part in it. Oh and a hell of alot of research might help to :D

I'll give it ago me and a couple of mates did this a few years back now and we put in $20 each week to back the horses in our stable throught the comp and the person with the highest income won the comp and took the winnings I ended up winning can't remember how much it was in the end but it was up near $1000 was a nice little pickup.

Okay, I asked this before, but nobody answered.

What days and times do you all visit the forum? More importantly.....
Is there any day when you CAN'T use the forum?
And is there anyone who CAN'T come on here between about 7 and 9 at night?

If my auction idea is going to work, I really have to work it so that everyone has a chance to buy one of the top horses. So I really need to know what days and times are suitable for everyone.

sportz - am i right in assuming that we will all have differing number of horses in our stables according to how we proportion our funds at the auction?

And also, i was wondering about the idea of having a Trade Period whereby we can make one trade in which we swap horses with each other e.g. i propose to raw instinct that i will give him my Racing To Win and El Segundo for his Fields of Omagh and he can refuse/accept????? just a thought

We'll be choosing horses in 3 different categories (4yo+, 3yo, 2yo) and there'll be a minimum and maximum number of horses you can choose and a minimum and maximum amount of money you can spend in each category. So yes, we will have a different number of horses.

As for that trading idea, it sounds okay in theory, but I don't know that it would really work. I think it might just confuse things. In any case, if someone had a horse which was going well, then they wouldn't want to get rid of it. And if someone had a horse which wasn't going well, then nobody else would want it.

So, I don't think I'll be using that idea, not quite how you explained it anyway. There will however be two further trading periods during the competition, the first one just before the big Melbourne races, then another just before the Golden Slipper.

To be certain, check out the thread when I post it on Jan 1. But I'd say that it's highly likely you'll need to be able to come on here on Sunday January 7 in order to have the best shot at getting one of the top 4yo+ horses. Then Sunday Jan 14 for the top 3yos, and Sunday Jan 21 for the top 2yos.

I'll post the thread for this comp on either Jan 1 or Jan 2, but here's how the selection of horses will work:

People will have to come on here at least once a week (preferably a couple of times) over the next 3 weeks. Sunday nights will be the really important time if you want to grab the best horses. This is how it will work. There will be an auction for the very best horses in each category and the bidding will be open for about 4 or 5 days. But it will close on Sunday nights. Then we will have another 2 or 3 days to choose the rest of our horses in that category. First up will be the 4yo+ category next week, then the 3yos and finally the 2yos. I've done it that way to give us a bit more time to think about the 2yos. The Magic Millions will be decided by then.

Well, okay, let me rephrase that. They may not be your opinion of the best horses, but I'd suggest they'd be pretty close. Basically, they will be the horses which I have put the highest reserve price on.

Here's how it will work. I will put a 'reserve' price next to each horse. During the auction, that price is the minimum amount of money that you must bid for that horse. Let's say the reserve price is $300,000. If you bid $300,000 for that horse and then nobody else posts another bid, the horse is yours. BUT if someone does subsequently make a higher bid, then you'd have to go higher again to outbid them and buy the horse. The bidding can continue on like that right up until the deadline on Sunday night. By the way, the auction deadlines for each of the highest priced horses will actually be staggered slightly, so that people who miss out on one horse can then make a bid on the next one.

After the auction of the top priced horses finishes on the Sunday, the rest of the horses are chosen beginning on Monday night on a straight "first in first served" basis. People may even decide to completely ignore the auctions. They may prefer to buy a large number of cheaper horses, rather than a small number of expensive ones.

No. Only the top priced horses. Whatever horses are left after the auction on the Sunday can simply be claimed at their reserve price by the first person that chooses them from Monday night on.
