Welcome to the Sports Punting Comp thread for 2007. Please feel free to join in.

The comp will run from Thursday, February 1 to Sunday, September 30. The cutoff point for joining the comp is April 1. If you haven't made at least one bet by then, I'm afraid it's too late.

As usual, I've made a few changes to the rules from last year to hopefully create a bit more interest, and give us another exciting competition. There are a couple of changes I think a few of you might be keen on.

The bookmakers we will be using are:

Please read the rules very carefully.


RULES

Starting bank:
Everyone has a total of $3000 to bet with. However, you don't get the whole lot in one go. You have a starting bank of $1000 on Feb1. Then you are given an extra $500 on Apr1, Jun1 and Aug1. Then finally, you get another $500 on September 24 in time for the AFL and NRL Grand Finals. Obviously, the object of the game is to punt consistently well over the whole 8 months and end up with the highest amount in the bank after September 30.

Futures betting:
Like last year, 'futures' betting is permitted once again. For those that don't know what futures betting means, it's simply betting in advance on things like the premiership winner, top 4, final 8, wooden spoon, leading try scorer, leading goal scorer, brownlow medal etc.

Number Of Bets:
To qualify for the comp, everyone must make a minimum of 50 bets and a maximum of 200 bets.

Bet Sizes:
The maximum bet size is $100 and you can make as many $100 bets as your balance will allow. You can also bet in any multiple of $5 up to $100, so in other words, $5, $10, $15, $20, $25 etc etc.

Fixed Odds Racing:
This year I'm introducing betting on Fixed Odds horse racing. You'll be allowed to bet on any Group 1 race run in Australia that our bookies are betting on. (Australian Cup, Blue Diamond, Golden Slipper, Doncaster, Stradbroke etc etc) HOWEVER, you must bet on these races BEFORE final acceptances. In other words, once the final field is known, you won't be allowed to bet on them. This is to get people to bet early and take a bit of a risk, instead of waiting until the last day or so, which is after all just like normal TAB betting.

Sports Multi-bets:
The maximum number of legs allowed in sports multi bets has been increased from five to TEN. Please make sure that you don't have two bets involved in your multi where one result can affect another. To be safe, it's just best to make sure you include all entirely different matches in your multi. Also, you can not include Horse Racing in one of these sports multis.

Racing Multi-bets:
Having introduced betting on racing, you can now also take multis on them. Only doubles though. No more than TWO legs for Horse racing multis. And as above, it's only Australian Group 1 races and you must bet BEFORE the final acceptances for both events are known.

Sports Allowed:
Each week, I will post a list of sports that people can bet on for that week. It will include all the regular Australian sports plus the biggest events from overseas.

Posting your bets:
Of course, it goes without saying that you must post your selections before the starting time of each event, and certainly no editing of posts after starting time. When posting your selections, please set them out very clearly so everyone knows exactly what the bet is. Please try to state your opening balance, bet number, bookie, your selection, bet size, latest odds, possible winning amount and closing balance. Try to set out your bets something like this:

I will keep a record and post an updated leaderboard regularly. Even so, could everyone try to make sure that you don't make any mistakes with your adding up etc.

Anyway, only two posts in and you're already causing me problems. :o

I'm afraid I can't accept that second bet on Australia. I know I forgot to include it in my list of rules, but as was the case wth the comp last year, you can't bet in the run on the Cricket. You can bet between innings (or at lunch & tea in a test match), but you can't bet during the play.

In any case, why do you want to have two bets on the same outcome. Look what happened when you tried that with Tiger!

I've just realised that the Rugby World Cup final is on October 20 and that's after the Sept 30 deadline I initially set down for this comp to close. The past 2 years I've finished the comp with the NRL Grand Final, but I think some people will definitely want to bet on the Rugby World Cup, so I've decided to change that finishing deadline.

I wish I had found the Swimming bets earlier. On the Unitab site, they were actually hiding in a section called "Miscellaneous Sports", and I only just found them as the men's 400m freestyle was starting. So I didn't have enough time to back the Korean guy Park and he ended up winning at $7. :(
