Hoping for POP ROCK, or DELTA BLUES. Took advantage of that TAB promotion, and had $50 on Pop @ 26.00, and the same on Delta @ 61.00.
Pretty generous odds I thought....

Not really, as those two fought it out lengths ahead of the rest last year. I know they are good, all they need to do now is get over here and do it again!!!

No idea for the 1st time in awhile i have nothing I am looking at but I will say that I don't mind Sir James for Cummings as a chance and also thought if you wanted to have a stab at the Jap horses then have a tickle at Tosho Knight has some good Japanese form from what i am led to believe and should be well off at the weights compared to the other 2.

Tosho Knight ran 5th in the Group 1 Tenno Sho Spring (3200m) the same race Makybe Diva finished 7th in 2005. Guess that's a plus for Tosho Knight.

I should have had Maybe Better in there just forgot to type his name in he is the obvious chance i feel of the local horses just needs to learn to settle with someone other than Arnold on his back not sure what weights they are going to get but I doubt Steven will be able to ride him in this.

Reported that the Aiden O’Brien trained Yeats and Scorpion are both in doubt of making the trip to Australia for the Cup. In the case of Yeats they're are claiming too much weight & concerns at the equine influenza crisis.
In my view better off staying at home cause Yeats was far from impressive in winning the ********** St Leger on the weekend. All over the place last 300m & it was only Kieren Fallon's vigour that got Yeats home narrowly over stablemate Scorpion!

After Saturdays race.....how far Efficient? $7 (on TAB-better elsewhere) is very juicy on a horse that looks like only injury could rule him out.

Maybe Better seems to ticking along nicely,,,looks as thought they have only the one thing in mind for this horse,,
Zipping was a huge run in last years MC ,,ridden basically upside down...i was impressed the way it fought on..
Efficient ..flying along,,if ridden right on Mc day he'll be hard to beat..
these my top 3..
best outsider is Ice Chariot,,,loved his last win and distance isnt a prob..heard hes flying in track work and really thriving down there.

yeah massive jump in distance agreed but when activation and cinque cento turned it into a staying test, all the horses had to get going at the 800 or earlier and there were none coming home harder the efficient.

Efficient and Maybe Better are both ticking over beautifully for this race and Maybe Better gets a nice weight concession off of Efficient aswell, hard to get to hyped on much else right now however Master O'rielly and Eskimo Queen look the goods aswell I also liked the run of Princess Coup over in NZ on the weekend haven't checked out her breading but she did hit the line hard and is supposed to be here for the Caulfield Cup which should be a lead up to coming to this race.

Don't know it's breeding, but it ran a near track record over 2000 at Caulfield the start before, and it was very strong at the line in the Turnbull, suggesting it should at the very least get a strong 2400.
Only time will tell.
Whether it's up to CC class remains to be seen, but if the speed is on you could do a lot worse than backing this bloke e/w.
The tempo in the Turnbull was farcical, yet he still finished it off, which makes me think with the pace on(usually is in a CC)will suit him even better if ridden quitely.

whats the go with scorpion..i know greg childs-rodd jnr likes it but havent seen much press about it
It will be a bit farcical if they run with the usual 24
I reckon they should grab a couple of oldies from the Melbourne cup parade to add a bit of depth..although i reckon Arwon and What a nuisance might just miss the place ..but I'd definitely have Saintly,Ethereal,Media Puzzle and Might n Power in my top ten :D

I have heard there has been alot of money on Mahler for the cup shortened from $41 to $11 but I would question if that money is for real most of the true english form students rate it quite considerably lower than Scorpion and Purple Moon and they have Scorpion a mile in front of Purple Moon make of that what you will. They ofcourse do have to acclimatise

I'm sure Aidan O'Brien was the same bloke that brought out Vintage Crop and that other horse [can't remember it's name]. Vintage crop was the underdog of the two [ho ho].
The same plan this time? Maher is here to help set up the race for Scorpion I think and is the one to watch as the smokey but we don't know how well he will settle in.
Duro Valley had every chance to win last start and couldn't. Blue Monday got held up a bit in the straight but wouldn't have had a hope of catching Master O'rielly who ran the Caulfield Cup very close to the race record. The Fuzz ran a great race yesterday.
I think the uneven conditions of the new Flemington track will have a big say in the MC outcome, but I wouldn't want to be on anything running next to the fence!

I'm sure Aidan O'Brien was the same bloke that brought out Vintage Crop and that other horse [can't remember it's name]. Vintage crop was the underdog of the two [ho ho].
I think Dermot Weld trained Vintage Crop, & also trained Media Puzzle, didn't he?

Yeats and Scorpion - courtesy of the RacingPost
Sunday was a day for horses with courage. At Doncaster Mahler fought hard to hold his place at the head of affairs in the St Leger, sticking his neck out as far as he could, and had he not stumbled he may have won. Stablemate Honolulu was flying at the finish but neither of them could repel John Gosden’s giant of a horse, Lucarno. Lucarno gave Gosden his first St Leger, and rider Jimmy Fortune his first classic.
Meanwhile in Ireland Yeats secured his and his trainers first ********** St Leger but stablemate Scorpion did not go down without a brave fight. Yeats showed just how classy he is, and how determined he and his jockey are.
You had to feel sorry for Scorpion who gave his all. But the St. Leger win came after Yeats was beaten in his two previous attempts and perhaps the 5 year old Scorpion will be back next year to win his.
Kieren Fallon held Yeats in mid-division as Scorpion, under Seamus Heffernan, held a comfortable lead throughout much of the race. Two furlongs out, Scorpion seemed to find another gear and spurted three lengths clear of the field.
Fallon had Yeats under a stiff drive and at first didn’t appear to make any headway on the leader. Fallon kept after his charge, and Yeats dug in and gradually wore down Scorpion to win by a half-length.

Mahler lost 6 kg and Scorpion lost 5 kg after the flight over which is normal they both ate on the way over and have fed since then. They worked at Sandown just a light cantor nothing serious as yet. Ive backed Scorpion a while ago and i think it will be in with a good chance although Mahler has been backed in quite abit. I still like the 61-1 i got about On a Jeune!

I don't think it's going well enough at the moment, I hope I'm wrong though, I like the horse, although it did cost me a few bob for very little outlay when it ran 2nd to the mare a couple of years back when I had a Derby/Cup double of Benicio/OAJ before the Geelong Cup at 5000/1.
I hope you're on a winner, although a mate of mine told me on the weekend that it had buckleys because no horse starting with O has ever won the cup. I hope it draws barrier 18 and ********s it in lol. GL.

We all like to say "we backed the winner" but really from a betting point of view, surely forget everything else just back the first 2 or 3 in the market year in year out and you'd be in front wouldn't you?
Personally, I'll be having my usual Tri 2x3x7 ($10 @ 50c units) I snagged one a few years back for $500, so I figure I can have the same bet for 50 years with "THEIR" money!

I remember reading an article about a week ago and Hayes saying MF would have to at least place to go into the Cup. She had no excuses this year. I can't believe punters keep backing her at ridiculous odds when she keeps getting beaten. 'Champion'?

A weak cup and a bad betting week.
They should have moved the flemington carnival to Sandown this year to give all the horses a fair chance on a stable track surface.
Flemington will be a shifting track, very biased and over-watered. Anyhow, it should be a good track by next spring after the surface settles down. Something to look forward too.

I dont understand how you can say there was a bias, sure the inside was a no go zone last time, but horses won from everywhere. Horses that have won or raced well at flemington did so and horses that generally dont perform did the same. Is it the fact that we have got so used to Caulfield and Mooney Valley racing that we have forgotten what its like on a big track with a nice long straight, that the same horses winning at Caulfield at Mooney valley arn't necessarily going to be suited by the different track and therefore we need to adjust to something we havnt had for almost a year? Its not like the form hasnt stacked up, The Fuzz ran 2nd, Vormista clearly an in form horse won like it should have, Serious Speed massive run for 2nd has since franked its form, the Turnbull had some great runs in it and for those that didnt run well the trainers all blamed the track, yet the only horse that improved off its turnbull run won its next race, and its still a maiden at flemington. Currently some very interesting examples of market efficiency in the MC futures market with the aptly named Efficient.
He was unloved in the market 24 hours ago, until I heard a 2KY piece about his trackwork.
Nothing much changed for 20 hours until this piece ended up in the next morning newspapers.
To me, schooling disinterested horses over jumps doesn't appear that newsworthy or significant but its newspaper reporting has been enough to arrest Efficient's slump from $25 into $14 on Betfair.
My bet is this is a great lay for the moment.

Mahler is really only a 3yr. old and was only here to sacrifice itself to set up a decent pace for Scorpion and is a very uptight horse, especially now her stablemate is stuffed.
Eskimo Queen didn't fire a shot in the Cox, despite being unnecessarily flogged to death by Newitt. Horses usually produce a very ordinary run after that sort of treatment.
Master O'riely still looks the goods I think. Gallic ran a fast race last week in the M.V Cup for a nice win and Scenic Shot did a big turn-around in form in the Jayco Mile after being ridden back, so I'm not sure what to make of that[?]

Well we're off to Melbourne tomorrow morning for the annual horsefest, good luck to you blokes for the rest of the carnival, I hope you all back a winner. E.I? Weak field? Rain? Track bias? I could care less, it's gonna be a ************ great week as always.
Derby - I'm sticking with Villain although Down Under Boy is my best return.
Cup - Master O'Reilly the obvious choice but I like a bit of value so I'll continue to take Princess Coup and Blue Monday and have a lash while they are over 20/1. Scenic Shot is best of the roughies for me at this stage. Best return for me overall though funnily enough due to earlier CC/MC and GC/MC doubles is Tawqueet.
Oaks - I don't really care too much for Oaks Day, I'm usually running on empty after too many nights on the turps and I'm ready to head home, and the Mrs is with me so I'm unlikely to join the skirt chasers. I'd rather be at the casino nursing a beer and watching the aussies smash sri lanka in the first test. Dianas Secret will do me though.

This race is starting to look interesting the question is can Master O'Reilly handle a 2.5kgs rise in the weights from the Caulfield Cup compared to everyone else he met in that race, As impressive as the win was there were some excuses for the chasers and that is a nice turn around in weight out to 2 miles.
Purple Moon: looks very hard to beat as far as I am concerned his trainer is world class and by all reports he is flying got the right jockey on board as well as he usually gives a good ride in this race.
Maybe Better: He looks dour enough and the rain around won't hurt him but I must admitt I am going to find it real hard to back him I keep finding excuses for this bloke and at this point a bet on him on tuesday will be nothing more than a nice saver bet plain and simply I have ridden along this far might aswell follow to the final hurdle stranger things have happened.
Blutigeroo: I like this bloke here I know he ran in the Sydney Cup and was beaten but he has been trained for this trip this time around not to mention from memory I believe he loves it wet (I could be wrong) either way he is as good a roughie as there is in this I feel.
Sirmione: Can't believe I am saying this but he is not out of this drops beautifully in weight and is improving atleast yesterday was a shock tuesday won't be for me, he most likely will start unders however because of the Cummings factor so he will be included in multiples but that is about as far as it goes for me also likes the cut out.
Efficient: I still feel that he is a better chance than Zipping maybe I am nuts but he is more dour and will stick out the trip I consider Zipping a doubt of doing that, a bit of rain doesn't hurt his chances either another I have felt was right in this from he start not going to leave him out now.
Master O'Reilly: I know he won the Caulfield Cup but the penalties he has gotten just might catch up with him here, one thing to say here as with most races this spring expect the unexpected cause it has happened in nearly every major race.
This are not my final picks just quickly going over some that I like I am entertaining Mahler, Blue Monday, Gallic among others I just want to sit down and review some races and form before I get to crazy will post again either tomorrow or tuesday.
The Leaders in the race will most likely be Mahler, Tungsten Strike? (I don't know someone had mentioned that he can take up a position), Sculptor & Lazer Sharp wouldn't completely shock either in a race like this there will be speed from somewhere eventually I do expect Mahler to hit the lead though.

I backed Purple Moon before it ran in the CC and i got a very healthy price im now worrying with the state of the track it could possibly be slow by tuesday and i know for a fact that Purple moon doesnt really like it wet all his runs O/S have been on firm going and the one run on Soft was unplaced. It wouldnt surprise me to see a 15-1 or higher win as nothing really stands out. I have learnt that CC form over the years is the best lead up race but im still not convinced with MOR win. Try On a Jeune,Efficient, and Gallic as roughies although i will be cheering loud on Purple Moon!!

I've finally had a good look at the form today and boy is this a weak race. You could build a house with all the hype [it's that solid] talking this race up in the media.
---------------------------------------------------------
MASTER O'REILLY
The one to beat on recent form.
ZIPPING 6g
Won a G2 a year ago and had a 3rd in a G2 over 1600m at MV Sept. this year.
Strung 6w together in a row in 2005 in modest races, but only 2w out of 10 since. Has been consistently racing above his class in my opinion. Keeps looking good but never goes on with it [you know what I mean]. Might place.
PRINCESS COUP 4m
Needs a good or dead 4 at worst.
MAHLER
Only had 6 starts and too inexperienced I think for such a big event.
PURPLE MOON 5g
Won over the distance but it was a weak $6k race. Best efforts: Won at York in Aug. over 2800m HCP 280K and won a Listed race $45k. Place chance for me.
SIRMIONE 4g
An Encosta de Largo smokey from Bart who has come good, right on queue. If sneaky old Bart is ever going to win another MC this is his big chance, as it is as weak as water.
MAYBE BETTER
Been up for 7 runs this prep. and the form has been woeful. Won a G3 a year ago but hasn't fired a shot since, not even a place. Maybe never again in this life.
EFFICIENT 4g
Inefficient and bored with racing. Done nothing since last year but could win a country C1 to pay a few feed bills perhaps?
GALLIC 8g
A Zabeel horse. Age is a worry but going strong. Barrier is another big worry. Can place or even win if it gets lucky enough from b24 ?
ESKIMO QUEEN 4m
Another one bored with racing and going nowhere in this life. Try back to own sex.
ON A JEUNE 7g
On a hiding to nothing. Apart from a 3rd 1st up at Balaklava last year, hasn't won or placed since 2005. Not even in a miserable $20k race.
BLUTIGEROO
Name sound like 'Glue' dosn't it? Hasn't gotten closer than 7ths. this prep. from 6 starts, but did win a G1 at Rosehill in March this year and 1 lth. off Gallic over Cup distance for a 5th. in a G1 in May. Dead or slow is OK. Place chance.
DOURO VALLEY 6g
Another by Ecosta de Largo and at least the form has been consistent and good this year [a rare thing among a lot of these runners]. Wet OK and a winning or place chance for sure.
SCULPTOR 5h
A heavily raced horse [44 starts]. Has never won a Group race in 10 Group race attempts in NZ [he placed once in a G2 in 2005]. The fact he won a G3 on Sat. is a clear indication of how bad this season's runners have mostly been. OK in the wet.
THE FUZZ
Peaked start before last in my opinion and needs a spell.
BLUE MONDAY 7g
Last win was a weak G3 over 2200m 14 mths ago. Considering the competition here, a place chance?
DOLPHIN JO 5g
Form OK. Beat the Fuzz at Flemington 3 starts back but has been up for 7 starts. If he has one more good run in him he might place or even win this as he ran a 2nd [New Kid in Town/Dolphin Joe/Sentire] 5th up at the distance at Sandown in the slow last prep. and Sandown form is good Flemington form. He'll grow and extra leg on the wet track and is a win or place chance.
TAWQEET
Last win was a over a year ago. A bit of an improvement last start but has been racing like a donkey who doesn't want to be there.
SCENIC SHOT
Last start was a shocker and probably needs a spell.

No thanks:
TUNGSTEN STRIKE ?
LAZER SHARP
BLACK TOM
SARRERA [heavy tracker].
RAILINGS [how did he get in?]
-----------------------------------------------
My early selections in order:
MASTER OREILLY, DOURO VALLEY, DOLPHIN JOE, SIRMIONE, GALLIC, BLUTIGEROO, PURPLE MOON
Considering the weights, odds and the Sandown form over this distance in the slow, I think Dolphin Joe is a good e/w smokey.

contrary to everyones thoughts i believe Master O'reilly has peaked. I know he's racing well but i dont know if he'll get the 3200m especially since the caulfield cup was his go. he definitely still one of the top chances but i think the strong run in the caulfield cup may have hurt his chances for this race.
im probably wrong but IMO Master and Zipping should be swapped in betting.

I'm worried about MO's extra 3kg weight now in what's looking like a slow track for Tues. now. I was surprised to hear of more rain in Melb. I thought it would pan out to a dead by Cup time. Doesn't look like it even with the new drainage. If it stays a jog and sprint though [who is going to sacrifice themselves to put the speed on?], MO is still a good chance but maybe a bad bet at the odds. For a slow track I'm putting Dolphin Joe on top as a e/w bet.

What's that great line by Gallic's trainer....it's broken down more times than Grandpops lawnmower.
Would be great to see him at the finish.
Very sharp work by Crash.
Very.

Blue Monday slow track form reads 5: 2-2-0, seems to be improving as the distances get bigger. Last start on a wet track was 4l behind Collier Hill. In this field i think that is pretty good form. $41 - $11 seems pretty good value.

Plenty of rain today, but shouldn't be as much/any tomorrow and they are thinking clear Tuesday. Track could very well be dead(4) -> good(3). IMHO.

Do the form for dead. No more rain and good drainage.

no, no rain today at all, just mild winds which should dry the track out a bit, will probably be a dead track, and no rain forecast at all for today/tomorrow.
My tips: Maybe Better (backed it last month, it with Master OReilly :CC & MC double) and Princess Coup who i am really starting to lean towards!

I was so close, yet so far away to the trifecta.
Had a boxed trifecta with Mahler, Purple Moon, Zipping, Princess Coup, MO, Blue Lazer... didnt give Efficient a chance really, he ********ed it all up for me, if only he could have come 4th!
2 years ago I had Railings, Maybe Better, Maybke Diva and On a Jeune... didnt know what a boxed trifecta was then, had them in the wrong order and wrong combos so I missed it!
One day I will get it!
