Has the pace to race up front but not sure how strong she can run out 2000m?

mate i reckon shes going to be a top notch horse, i think 1600-2000 is her go from what we saw last prep in the blue diamond, slipper, sires etc., looking for a big season. i backed her at 40s on betfair, might lay off when she comes in after a solid first few races, i'm not sure she will be able to go head to head with the likes of marasco and haradasun etc

I have backed it @ 14's on Betfair a few weeks ago, but you could probably do better than that. I heard one of our aussie jockeys that race over in Hong Kong (Prebble i think) saying VIVA PATACA was in his opinion one of the top 3 horses in the world middle distance. He thought it would win the Cox plate, and would also win the Caulfield if it raced. That was good enough for me...

if Viva Pataca settles into Australia well and handles our race tracks I feel he will win the race I just have the feeling he is a class above the horses we have right now the only reason you are seeing double figures about him is that he has to aclimatise. Of the Australian horses I only have a couple at this point that i don't mind for the race and they are Pompeii Ruler who I feel is almost fool proof the fact he can take a forward position helps him no end here, the other is Marasco however I have a feeling he will always have trouble beating Pompeii Ruler on this track.

Viva Pataca is the one they all have to beat IMO.

Had some as well. Broke a 12 year old track record easily beating Vengeance Of Rain (no slouch) in a Gr 1 over 2400 at Shatin, Hong Kong in June this year. Have also backed in the CC.

Trainer Greg Eurell has just announced that he hasn’t ruled out a start in the Cox Plate for Apache Cat.

A bit of a turnabout as Eurell was adamant after last year's failure same race, that he would stick to feature races up to 1600m in the future, for Apache Cat.

I have heard that they are going to refund the money on all the horses that cannot race in the 3 big races because of EI so don't give up hope you might get your money backon Viva Pataca yet as that is the only reason he is not coming out here.

I would be all over Efficient on yesterdays performance that was sensational another 400m will only help him where alot of the other contenders I feel are somewhat suspect at the trip he is $13w and $4p right now and I feel the only reason for that is the uncertainty of whether he will run in the race, I am starting to think the reason why Steven Arnold is riding this bloke is because the Cox Plate is what they prefer as he wouldn't cop a penalty for taking it out where he would cop one for the Caulfield Cup, Rembering ofcourse that Arnold can't ride a light weight making it almost impossible for him to be riding Maybe Better in the cups.

yeah, efficients run was a slasher, i'm still unsure what they are aiming him at, but he still looks the goods! i thought the way cinque cento held on after going with activation at that cracking pace was a good sign, but i dont think hes a winning chance, but still could be there for a place in CP/CC.

I like Miss Finland and Efficient right now and contrary to alot of thoughts on this race it does look rather weak to me this year as it has been for a few years now, obviously the loss of NSW and QLD horses isn't helping the depth in alot of these races but there really doesn't seem to be alot of hopes in this.

Efficient is a 'grinder' more suited to the Cups [especially the Melbourne] I think. Anything winning the Cox will have to be able to unleash a fast finishing 200m sprint. Something Efficient just can't do.

tough race and one you could call made up of out of form horses after the turnbull. many looked to have chances excepting Haradasun with his tough trip 3 wide the whole way. it just seems to me superstar horses still win from such runs. Devil Moon showed that this prep she is the real deal and showed that her form last prep in adelaide was just the beginning.

cox plate definitely revolves around haradasun, miss finland and devil moon. el segundo was disappointing but always shows up for this race. he needs to win this one and no F.O.O this year. divine madonna i like to i think she could give this a real shake but i dont like her at moonee.

I was huge on Efficient and to be honest I don't know what to make of his last run supposedly he pulled fairly hard as he never got cover or atleast this is what I heard being said by Steven Arnold, I still feel he is as good if ot better than the horses that contested the Turnbull on the weekend the inside was a complete no go zone by that race on the weekend and he was there all the way, I really wonder whether Haradasun was truly disadvantaged by travelling deep in that race as it would have been better to be out there covering some ground than it would have been to be on the fence look where the 1st few across the line came from all down the outside.

I find it hard to fathom the big "push" for Efficcient last weekend. It must have been a street corner tip,as every man and his ****** were barking it.
Steve Moran & Alf Matthews both tipped it as a special.
What rot these highly paid morons dish out to punters in the guise they know what they are talking about.
The Turnbull(on paper at least)looked to be a race of many chances,so how anyone could possibly tip any horse in that race as a special is beyond me.
Bryan Martin said(just before they jumped)"this is the race that shapes the Spring."
God help us then.
IMO Efficcient is not and never will be a 2000mtr horse.
Williams has said all along it is being set for the MC,so IMO that wa s a fitness run,any $ picked up would have been a bonus.
Barrier 1 didn't help,as all jockeys knew(it was R7)that the inside was a no go zone.
Steve Arnold had no chance of getting out from that draw, and if you like it for the Cup,forgive it that run.
Sack it at your own risk.
Marasco is obviously sore, but couldn't win a Cox anyway.
Only has a 400 mtr sprint at best, and to win a Cox you have to sustain an 800 mtr run.
Haradasun to beat Miss F for mine.
Devil Moon likely leader, and whilst she is on fire, she aint no Sunline.
Off pace runners usually win the Cox,throw in El SEgundo(forgive his run too, wasn't that bad)I think the winner will come from those 3.
No fancy odds though, especially if Miss F wins this weekend(as expected.)

crash
9th October 2007, 10:54 AM
Hard not to agree about Efficient. The horse comes from behind, the race had no pace and the nag ran accordingly. Wait for longer for sure. Devil Moon's owners are paying the $100k fee to get into the Cox and it only has to run 8th [should be there abouts I reckon] to get most of that back.

The pace will be on in the Cox [a truly run race] and a lot of these 'stars' will be nowhere to be seen in the sprint home. Segundo still looks the goods to me as very few mares ever win the Cox which will be a big ask for Miss F.

Marasco will come near last as he's proving to be useless beyond 1600m!

im confused with miss finland's defeat. she battled to the line well and was obviously never going to win. it looked as thoiugh she just couldnt sprint as quick as maldivian at the end of the race. what oim wondering is what horse has the actual ability to win the plate. on that run she can't. maldivian was many classes above. i think divine madonna has improved with every run and at this stage she would be my tip yet ive mentioned before i dont like her at moonee. i agree with the call on sipping he does look the value and although still decent odds madonna was odds too before yesterdays win. honestly i think Niconero is the horse that is getting set at the right time. but if anyone can confidently tip a horse to run a place you r full of it

I tend to agree with Weekend Husslers trainer, horses that win a Cox Plate are specifically set for the race, not as an afterthought because they are going well.
Williams has said all along that Efficcient was aimed at the MC,not sure about Zipping.
Hayes also said after the weekend defeat that he was dissappointed, but to remember she is being trained to run 2 miles.
You would think that Devil Moon and/or Maldivian(if it runs)will set a good tempo, which could set it up for Haradasun or El Segundo.
Unless Marasco turns things around,I can't see him winning.
I,m going for Haradasun to beat El Segundo.

10. Divine Madonna Mark Kavanagh 2
11. Miss Finland David Hayes Craig Williams 1
12. Devil Moon Mark Kavanagh Hugh Bowman 3
13. Eskimo Queen Mike Moroney Craig Newitt 8

I think that Devil Moon will get a good run here. Can't see what will apply the pressure here. Although i'm not too sure weather there will be pressure as it is a Cox Plate as there always is, or will this not be the case with a weaker field lacking visiting horses?

Haradasun will be a good run in behind the speed.

And I think Efficient will put in a much better run this time. He is a zabeel with the blinkers going on and has been working really well during the week.

Haradasun, Devil Moon and Wonderful World will probably go forward Zipping wouldn't shock me either if it goes forward in this as I believe it has around his distance range in the past. This will not be a hard run race but the last 1000-800 is usally intense enough to give everything a chance to run on, Efficient might suffer from this but I still feel he is good enough to win this race and drew the perfect barrier for him gives him the chance to pull to the outside without being cluttered up behind horses I just hope Arnold is patient cause it is amazing how many times horses get run down in this race when they go for home to soon

El Segundo really slingshots the turn here and the short straight helps him,,he also doesnt need the speed on to show this dash either,, ..i really like him and at the 8s i'm very confident..

Zipping you would think would have to do a DIva and go the carpark route ,,but he'll get on the back of something and does like the track,,he's runs of late look better than efficients..i'm already on at the 21's but i'm having alittle extra on the 34's that you can get now..

Miss Finland,,she'll have to take advantage of the draw,,i kind of like her against the rail here as Williams has had trouble keeping her straight,,,,without doing to much work she might show that dash of old,,personally i think shes been trained to get the ground this prep and of course has lost that sprint..Shes got to much class not to atleast get a place here but will need alot of luck..

Devil Moon,,,cant argue the form,,wouldnt be getting to excited about her last run but she is the likely leader and could get a few cheap sectionals..

Haradasun...now i think hes the biggest danger to El...he'll be forward and might get the best of run of anything,,,,,best chance is if he can get the one/one and stay on the rails and not go around a horse..hes been set for this race as is El and its these types that usually win the hardest race on the Calendar..i'm not usually a saver kind of guy but ias has him at 6's so it makes sense to back him..

Efficient now with the blinkers is interesting,,i really think he needs the miracle gaps to appear but you know Loyd really wants this badly and is using his only ace here with the gear change,,,personally i think he needs more of straight to catch these but should run into the money..

These my top 6....

Mav I agree Efficients last run was ordinary but there were excuses and that track was disgusting that day, His run before was a ball tearer behind El Segundo and Haradasun over a mile which doesn't suit him at all he has won at 2040m (Albeit against 3yo) likes the valley as I feel he likes the cut out of the ground a bit.

My top few right now are

Efficient
Devil Moon (I do query her a bit at the distance got all favors last start)
El Segundo
Lad of the Manor (he might be my little E/W saver this weekend in the race)
Miss Finland (I think she might get cluttered up LOTM when Makybe won)
Marasco (I think he is better than Haradasun personally I could be wrong have been before)

Efficient [blinkers] w

Haradasun
El Segundo [needs blinkers]
Divine Madonna
Niconero [running well and the smokey]
Miss Finland

This is a hard one. I'll be going for value after the draw and I think Efficient [b5] is good value who's run in the Turnbull should be ignored. He had a hit-out with blinkers first time against stablemate Zipping last Sat. at the Valley and apparently even impressed old Bart.

Haradasun has drawn well in b4 and this is the race he has been set for and is a good wining chance. Should take up a forward slot close to the obvious and only leader Devil Moon [suss at the distance]. I'll throw Haradasun into my multiples though as I think he will be too short for a win bet for me.

Miss Finland with b1 certainly doesn't deserve to start fav. She is really going to cop it from there and will be ridden for luck hoping to set up for a good run from the 800m.

Divine Madonna will get a fair way back but should come home like a train with Efficient, so I put her in my multiples too.

As always in the week leading up to the race you hear the whispers....

I have just got off phone with a close mate of mine who does a bit of fill in work during the spring carnival for some trainers, all he could talk about was Marasco, and how well he handled the valley at his gallop and how impressed Kersley is with him. He promised the info was straight from the strapper and they are quietly confident of a big, big showing.

I may have a little on him, but will definately be putting him in my multiples.

None there that can match Els sprint and your right,,,
just think that the jockeys knew what tempo they were jogging at and didnt give themselves a chance at all..
