How are they going to load 255 horses in the stalls ;)
Interesting criticism of Hugh Bowman, Australian racing and Craig Williams overnight by the UK journalists.
Hugh Bowman assessed as good, but not strong enough.
Craig Williams criticised as poor based on his loss on Miss Finland in Sydney.
Damien Oliver touted as Australia's best (I disagree).
Australian racing criticised (we whip our horses up to twenty times in the home straight)....apparently.
Shows a distinct lack of understanding of the big picture.
When you're three lengths clear over a 2 mile flat race, you're hardly going to hit your horse as often as a 1200m dash, when they're neck and neck.
I defy them to prove that any jockey hits his horse twenty times in the straight over any distance!
Every second wield of the persuader does not make contact.
In the UK every wield hits it's mark.
Oh...and apparently we hit them on the neck, not the shoulder!!!!
This comes from a UK journo who visited more than eight race meetings in Australia. Perhaps they should send someone else who can see.
Anywhooo, for the Cup ...Maybe Better ;)

Although 2005 CC winner Railings failed last year did look to find some form again earlier this year. At 50/1 ew you could do worse.

Like a couple here Maybe Better is all quality being trained by a master who i would love to see win on that 1st tuesday in november however I feel the race at Caulfield might be a better chance for this guy. Sir James my Melbourne Cup roughie I think is a chance in this to ofcourse this is all hinging on how the horse comes back as a 4yo.

...from what I've read Maybe Better is being set specifically the big one..if so can't imagine Brian Mayfield-Smith risking a potential penalty

fair enough he is a chance in any of these staying races anyway hard to say you wouldn't knock either one back though.

Apart from the 2 Japanese horse,Maybe Better's was the run of the race for an immature stayer.
IMO the Japs will get weighted out of it this year,MB won't,will be stronger and more mature this year, and Brian is one of the best in the business.
I,ve backed it already and gonna keep nibbling at it as long as it remains above $20.
If it comes up this prep as I expect, you wont get those odds come raceday.

A mate of mine reckons the metropolitan is always a great lead up race for this but apart from last year I'm not so sure. Anyone agree / disagree?

Nice return by Maybe Better on the weekend, worked home nicely in the closing stages although well beaten. Could take out the CC / MC double.

How was the run of Sefrah yesterday at Sandown.
201-1 for the caulfield cup.
Gaining a start may be a hurdle but a sly pete mckenna ($10) on her surely wont bust the bank and you never know!

Don't know for sure but did read on the 'Racing in the West' thread some months back that he had gone to Hayes to be trained for the MC

read somewhere highly unlikely for this race instead trainer aiming for black-type mares races or shorter distances

I think Master O'Reilly an excellent chance
Eskimo Queen looks very good
Brom Felinitiy must be a good smoky - i got her at 151 - she's won the sandown classic over 2400 i think - no weight and assured of a run

this looks an open race and it maybe the only one of the big 3 which is, horses like Efficient and Maybe Better are both big chances but I amnot totally convinced that Efficient will be in this race I seriously am wondering if they will take the chance of copping a hefty weight penalty if he managed to win this convincingly. The 2 aforementioned horses i feel there race comes a couple of weeks later hence horses like Eskimo Queen, Master O'Rielly, Devil Moon, Brom Felenity, Duoro Valley & Princess Coup all have chances in this race there are a few others i am looking at and amnot really interested in getting into the pre post market of this race there will be plenty of value race day I feel.

That is interesting she has a good style for the race and she is bred to be a chance of running out the distance being related to both Brew and Horlicks in her pedigree on the dams side I believe

2nd October 2007, 09:18 AM
I've noted she's been a strong market firmer (last move $35 into $26) so some punters must think a good chance of running.

3rd October 2007, 06:57 AM
Yea I thought she was a bit of a chance aswell hit the line nicely behind Seachange last start in the stoney bridge I amnot sure about the comparison to Eskimo Queen or not but she has ability, it is the kiwis record over here in spring that makes you worried about backing her they usually don't go all that well in our major races maybe this year might be different.

Well I love Maybe Better in this all the comments worry me though he was storming home late on saturday and looks as if he is crying out for this trip he could win this if they wanted to it would appear that is not that case however I will be having something small on him just in case as I don't think connections could really be that disappointed with winning a race of this money and magnitude. Douro Valley is weighted to be an enormous chance and Anamato can't be written off either, I might be one of the few that feels this way but I really think Maldivian is very beatable here however there isn't alot of speed in this race which could be his saving grace someone normally does go forward and it would shock me if Annekov, Douro Valley and Cinque Cento all went forward to atleast make it a truly run race.

The barriers for Purple Moon [15] and Maldivian [1] have opened this race up. It's been 64yrs since a horse won from B1 and Maldivian faces being shuffled buck into a ruck and even out the back. He'll need some serious luck in the mad race to the early turn.
The pack is going to put the speed on so as not to hand Maldivian a race to suit. Purple Moon will be ridden for luck and will need plenty from so far out and will probably be at the tail after the 1st turn .....might see Maldivian there :-))

*This year, they have set the gates towards the outside running rail. Instead of the horses running straight to the first turn as is normal, this year they will all be running in at an angel as the barriers out wide will make it that much harder to get across [not good for barrier 1].

I can't see Maldivian [same sire but no Might and Power] avoiding the tumble-dryer effect after the start from b1 and has to cope with the step-up distance too.
I like the smokey Mandela and Blutigeroo might grow an extra leg over this distance. What a pity Princess Coup drew b19. A great run to win the NZ "Cox".

Blutigeroo, Friday:
Trainer Colin Little reported to stewards the gelding had been off his feed for a couple of days and was some doubt of not taking his place in the Caulfield Cup line-up.
But news was better this morning with Blutigeroo returning to normal and leaving Little scratching his head.
“He'd been off his feed but ate up again last night and worked well this morning,” Little said.
“He hasn't missed any work, his blood count is normal, he hasn't had a temperature and he hasn't had a cough. We just don't know.”
Little said a final decision would be made tonight but he seems fine and doesn't see any reason not to run.
