I need some help in setting up a database of past results. What info should i entered and how do i get it to search once theres enough info.
At the moment, the only database program I have is the one in MSWorks. Somehow, i don't think it will do the job.
Any assitance is most welcome.

Best Database to use : Oracle XE
Easiest Database to use : Microsoft Access.
Good Luck.

Benny, enter as much information as you can possibly obtain. What you dont deem as being important now might not be the case in 12 months time, and depending how you do it, it shouldnt be any harder.
IMO you will need either Oracle or MySQL, either will do, and both very similar anyway. But, you will need to familiarise youself with SQL, and PHP if you want to make the job of manipulating/displaying the data much easier.
But if you dont know anything about programming you face an uphill battle, good luck.

I read somewhere on the internet that it might be possible to do the same thing with excel, but i'm not sure.

Please dont use Excel. Where do you plan to get the raw data from? Are you going to do it on a day by day basis, or write a program to go back and scrape it off the web?

If you use Excel keep in mind that you can only have 65,000 rows per sheet and believe me 65000 horses is not much data.
You would enter about 15000 per month which would only give you about 4 months worth of data per sheet.
Good Luck.

Good Luck.Exel 2007 has over 1 Million rows!! not that you would exel for a big data base

...I suspect Benny, the Mad Gambler, may have just pooped himself at the sight of your "most basic database."

You could cut that list pretty much in half as you are doubling up on information that is already in the database.
For instance records like, WETRACES, WETWINS, WETSECS, WETTHIRDS, TRACKRACES, TRACKWINS, TRACKSECS, TRACKTHIRDS dont need to be entered in each time you write to the databse as have already been entered in the databse previously and you can query the databse to get those results should you so desire.
What i mean by that is there is no need for a specific field say WETWINS because if you want to find out how many times a horse has one in the wet you would query the database.
Anyway, if you are serious, wesmip has given a pretty comprehensive list of the sorts of things you might want to keep records on, other than that start reading :)

Look Benny, buy a "how to" guide to databases.
To be able to help you, you have to know at least the basics.
Even the help in MSAccess is a start.
Believe me, I am not trying to be nasty or condescending.
Good luck.

Thanks to all I now have my datadase setup. Now do I record every hore in a race or just the place getters. I'm only going to record metro meetings only as that's when I do most of my betting.
