Very disappointed in myself for rating Race 3 at Flemington. It's just the sort of race I would usually leave alone. In any case, computer troubles meant I didn't post the ratings until the race was almost set to jump, so I assume nobody got to use the ratings for that race. Certainly hope so anyway, :o

Get real I said.Its alright to dream such nonsense BUT get out into the REAL world of punting and its a very different story.

Have had very little success in the races I posted. Meanwhile, 3 races that I decided to leave out would have all produced good results including a $5000 first 4!!! Damn!

Okay, time for a few different strategies for using the ratings. Basically looking at backing the top 2 raters. Backing 2 horses a race is my preferred way to bet.



Strategy 1:

(1) Concentrate on any race where the top rater has at least 30 points and the 2nd top rater has at least 15 points.

(2) If there are 2 equal 2nd top raters, take the first one mentioned as I list equal rated horses in order of preference. This is rare though. Only happens maybe once a month.

(3) The top two ratings added together must equal no more than 65 points. Races with higher than that amount can certainly still win, but they tend to be less value and it is harder to make a profit backing two horses.

(4) Bet amounts according to the horses' ratings. In other words, if the two runners are rated on 36 and 18, then bet $36 and $18 on them. If you think that's too much money to bet on a race, then you can adjust the amounts to suit yourself but always use basically the same ratio.

In that particular race, you would put $37 on Seachange and $17 on Princess Coup. Princess Coup won the race. On Unitab, she paid $6.60 for a return of $112.20 for your outlay of $54.

Here are the results since the start of the new season using Unitab dividends:

Aug: Races 29, Wins 18 (62%), Out $1671, In $1949.80, Profit $278.80 (16.7%)
Sep: Races 50, Wins 30 (60%), Out $2910, In $3473.30, Profit $563.30 (19.4%)
Oct: Races 14, Wins 11 (79%), Out $802, In $1166.10, Profit $364.10 (45.4%)
Total: Races 93, Wins 59 (63%), Out $5383, In $6589.20, Profit $1206.20 (22.4%)




Next, a slight variation on that idea:

Strategy 2:

(1) Concentrate on any race where there is either a C/W RT Special or a FRM RT Special or both. These are signified by a * in the ratings.

(2) Again back both of the top two raters, providing that the top rater has at least 30 points and the 2nd top rater has at least 15 points. If 2 equal 2nd top raters, take the first one listed.

(3) Only bet in races where the top 2 ratings add up to no more than 65 points.

(4) Again, bet in amounts equal to the horse's ratings.

Stedman ended up winning the race, a good example of the advantage of backing two horses. There was not a large profit on the race, but it was still a profit. Many people would have backed just Who's Ya Daddy and lost.

Results so far this season, using Unitab divs:

Aug: Races 28, Wins 19 (68%), Out $1628, In $1945.20, Profit $317.20 (19.5%)
Sep: Races 32, Wins 21 (66%), Out $1913, In $2486.70, Profit $573.70 (30%)
Oct: Races 6, Wins 5 (83%), Out $357, In $401.60, Profit $44.60 (12.5%)
Total: Races 66, Wins 45 (68%), Out $3898, In $4833.50, Profit $935.50 (24%)





Now a more selective approach using a rather quirky aspect of the ratings, but it seems to work.

Strategy 3:

(1) Concentrate on races where there is a FRM RT Special signified by a *. But you only bet in the race if that horse is NOT the C/W RT selection.

(2) Back the top two rated runners, providing the top rater has at least 30 points and the 2nd top rater has at least 15 points. If 2 equal 2nd top raters, take the first one listed.

(3) Again, only bet if the top two ratings add up to no more than 65 points.

(4) Bet 2 units on the FRM RT Special and 1 unit on the other runner (no matter what their individual ratings are). For this exercise, I will make 1 unit equal to $20 as that means we're betting $60 a race, roughly what we bet on the other two strategies. So it's $40 on the FRM RT Special and $20 on the other runner.

Aug: Races 10, Wins 6 (60%), Out $600, In $796, Profit $196 (32.6%)
Sep: Races 8, Wins 6 (75%), Out $480, In $864, Profit $384 (80%)
Oct: Races 4, Wins 4 (100%), Out $240, In $392, Profit $152 (63.3%)
Total: Races 22, Wins 16 (73%), Out $1320, In $2052, Profit $732 (55.5%)




Remember that all those figures are only using Unitab dividends. You would have been able to improve the results by betting elsewhere and getting higher dividends.

But I must say that I can't give you any guarantee that these methods will continue to make profits. Only that they stand a fair chance.

Anyway, I hope all this rambling has been of some interest. If any of you are using your own strategies with these ratings and having success, why not tell us. I'll be looking at some strategies for multi punters in the future.

About 66, but that never happens. The most I can recall is a rating of 60 I think and it's pretty rare to get above 55. That's why my rated prices on short priced favourites are almost always above the official price. It's rare for my ratings to price a horse at odds-on. For example, Weekend Hussler in the Guineas this week. It looks like he might start as short as $1.70 or something like that and I doubt that my rated price will get much lower than $2.00. That won't mean he's any less of a chance.

Really lacking in confidence at the moment. Did something really dumb on Saturday. I tinkered a bit with the usual rating method and it cost me. But more importantly, it cost anybody on here who used those betting strategies I outlined last week, as it meant that Miss Fantabulous was only rated 3rd, not 2nd. That was the difference between a loss and a big win! Sorry. :(

I seldom if ever use anyones tips,systems or strategies but on Saturday out of curiosity I dutched miss fantabulous and bellini rose after looking at your ratings.They were the two value horses from your top three ratings in that particular race.The other was under your predicted odds.

Having said that I prefer to select my own horses I still enjoy reading all of the posts in this forum and follow the results with interest.

Anyway you certainly steered me onto a very good winner in that race.Ty.

The sooner we get over this EI thing, the better. A real lack of quality racing today (apart from Moonee Valley). I couldn't even find any suitable races at Morphettville. Likewise with Rockhampton, and I ended up including a couple of races from Kembla Grange where the horses haven't run for 2 months. Risky. :o

There were a couple of small errors in the results summary for the three strategies that I posted earlier in the month. Anyway, I've fixed them and updated the figures now that the month is up.

Strategy 1:

Aug: Races 39, Wins 24 (62%), Out $2258, In $2581.4, Profit $323.40 (14.3%)
Sep: Races 52, Wins 31 (60%), Out $3029, In $3636.70, Profit $607.70 (20.0%)

Okay, I've done a bit more research. I decided to test out a couple of different staking methods on the betting strategy races, because those are the races I think are most suitable for backing the top 2 raters. Firstly, I went over all the strategy 1 selections and I bet exactly the same amount per race as I did with the original rules, but this time I simply saved on the shorter priced selection and I bet all of the rest on the longer priced runner. And then, I also worked out what the result would have been just using plain old level stakes - $30 on both selections no matter what price.

Here are the results:

Strategy 1 - Out $7284, In $8602.50, Profit $1318.50 (18.1%)
Back/Save - Out $7284, In $8610.60, Profit $1326.60 (18.2%)
Level stake - Out $7500, In $8883.00, Profit $1383.00 (18.4%)

So there you go. 3 very different staking methods and the end result was VERY similar with level stakes coming out just slightly in front. Interesting.



And here are some more stats from the strategy 1 races since August.

2nd rated: 125, Wins 28, Return $148.90, Profit $23.90 (19.1%)

That's certainly food for thought. 26.1% profit for the longer priced runner as opposed to just 10.8% profit for the shorter price. Something to look at for the future.

Now here's another betting strategy to look at. It's similar to Strategy 3, but not as selective. It's an idea I've been looking at for a while and it seems to work.

Strategy 4:

(1) Concentrate on races where the C/W RT selection and the FRM RT selection are two different horses. There must be one sole selection for each method, no equal selections.

(2) Back both runners, providing that they are the first two horses listed in the ratings. Also, the top rater must have at least 30 points and the 2nd top rater has at least 15 points.

(3) Again, only bet if the top two ratings add up to no more than 65 points.

(4) Bet the same amount on both selections. For the purpose of this exercise, we'll bet $30 on each runner, so we're betting roughly what we bet on the other three strategies.

As you can see, Marching was the C/W RT selection and Barbaricus was the FRM RT selection, and they were the top two rated runners in the race. This is the type of race we're looking for with this strategy.

Unlike the other strategies, we're betting equal amounts on both runners. This means that on the odd occasion, you might actually lose money on a race despite getting the winner, but it also means that you can get a great result if a good priced selection comes home.

Results so far this season using Unitab divs:

Aug: Races 12, Wins 7 (58%), Out $720, In $912, Profit $192 (26.7%)
Sep: Races 14, Wins 10 (71%), Out $840, In $1305, Profit $465 (55.4%)
Oct: Races 12, Wins 11 (92%), Out $720, In $1278, Profit $558 (77.5%)
Total: Races 38, Wins 28 (74%), Out $2280, In $3495, Profit $1215 (53.3%)



After looking at the past 3 months results, I guess my recommendation would probably be to use the Strategy 1 selections in conjunction with either Strategy 3 or Strategy 4.
