Hello all, I wonder if you can help me. A few years ago I started having a little flutter for fun with a betting system I worked out. I put aside $200 for my betting bank in a TAB account. I started with $2 bets and gradually increased my bets as I won. I now have about $5,000 in my account and am betting $60. Big bets like that are starting to scare me as I've lost back $1,000 of my profits. I lost $420 on Saturday. It's just not fun any more like when I was betting $2. I could afford to lose $10 in bets on a Saturday while having a day out with the girls. I'm not one for record keeping. But I usually have 5 to 10 system bets on a Saturday. Have I just had a lot of luck? Should I stop while I'm still in front so much?

Bet smaller amounts but you should really share your system with us here so we can also have fun. Remember its always punters vs TAB!

Actually on the tab its punters vs punters.

But what I think you meant to say was its punters vs bookies.

Good Luck

You haven't won a cent until you spend the money on something else. Which you haven't. I'd suggest you withdraw $4000 and spend it elsewhere. That way you have 'won' $4000, regardless of what happens to the other $1000.

Thank you all for your replies. I'll go back to $2 bets and pocket the profits. I can sure do with the money rather than keeping it in my betting account as money at risk. I feel better already. Thank you again. Mr. Quaddie, I may be old but I still have my wits about me. I do know on the tote it is punter versus punter. So thank you for your invitation, but I won't post the rules here and then have hundreds of punters betting the same system selections as me on the tote.

Granny - don't be too hasty to drop your betting level right back, in my opinion it is very likely that you are just experiencing a bad run. EVERY single punting method/system/staking plan WILL have bad runs, you're probably just going through one of these.

Can I ask you - how many selections have you had? I know you don't keep records, but even if you have a rough idea how many selections (bets) you've had, over what period of time, I can work out if you've had just a good run, or whether it is proven.

If you have the following stats -

Selections
Winners
Average Price

If you have those stats, I can tell you if you've got a viable method.

As an example, I had a method where I grew a bank from it's starting level to 150 times that level. I did a LOT of research, and a lot of number crunching, to work out what kind of losing streak I could expect, and I ended up REDUCING significantly the amount I was having on each bet. Well, lucky I did because I had a losing streak where my bank dropped back down by 40%. If I hadn't reduced my betting level, I might have lost the lot. Now, I am back up over that to a new level again. My point is, I have a winning method. But that's only half the battle. Knowing the right amount to bet on each selection (not only mathematically but also MENTALLY, ie for your own punting peace of mind) is crucial. I have the feeling that your betting level ($2 at a $200 bank, $40 at a $4000 bank, ie 1%) is probably too high. You can probably sense this, hence your worry. BUT - that DOESN'T mean chickening out and going back to $2 bets. It just means working out the RIGHT level. I can help you with that, if you want some help.

Between 5 and 10 bets every Saturday and increasing a Bank 25 times its initial Value by betting 1% of it over the span of 3 years.

Granny.
Surely you have had other poor results over the years?
Just a minor hiccup is what I reckon.
Don't stop now.
In 3 years time you will have over $125 GRAND!
And in 5 years it will be "A MILLION BUCKS!!!"

Thank you Grand Armee and Moeee, but I don't enjoy betting such big amounts on the horses. To think I could lose $500 in a day. No. Shudder the thought. Someone in my situation cannot do that. How can I possibly enjoy a day out with the girls when I am very worried about losing a lot of money every time I place a bet? Back to $2 bets will be just fine for me.

Hi Granny,

It is curious that you concentrate on the losses rather then the wins or alteast put them both on the plater at the same time.

Firstly one percent of bank is quite safe providing that you have had a decent strike rate ..... since you are winning you must be doing ok there.

The problem with going to $2 is that while your losess will be minimised also your profit will be so as well and I can guarantee you that majority of your nice profit did NOT come from betting $2. It has arived in the last 12 months or so because uptill then you would have been getting a few bucks here and there growing slowly.

I would suggest that you cut the percentage back to 0.5% which makes your bet $25 per selection or even less to 0.25% which is $12 this way you will still be able to get some leverage from your profit and also hopefully play within your comfort zone.

That is the key, if you are NOT betting in your comfort zone a run of out will certainly unnerve you and cause you to make decisions that you would not normaly make. Find you comfort zone and then slowly increase it as you get seatled.

Your loss of $460 on a saturday is equivelant to losing $14 EXACTLY the same risk to the bank except you are now playing with the bigboys. But proportionaly the risk is the same, although for it be be exactly the same a $60 bet will have to go hand in hand with a $6000 bank but if you are betting highest of bank then that is then ok because you obviously done that all along.

Find your comfort zone and bet within it I would suggest that $2 is no longer it go higher untill you get there and always put the loss into perspective of percentages of bank rather then dollars if you are happy to lose 10% of $200 then the same must be true for 10% of $5000 the risk as I said before is same. However I realise that its not always possible and so the advice re comfort zone is the best one.
