Was on the phone to Jason Day early this morning and he's primed for this weekends John Deere Classic. He's striking it well and his putter is on fire. He's not far away from getting married and i questioned him whether it was taking his mind away from golf. in answer he put his fiance Ellie on the phone who said he is playing brilliant and isnt doing a thing for the wedding. being a typical aussie bloke she said. so in that case i think my best bet of the week is him to make the cut.

John Deere Classic
Jason Day to make the Cut @ $1.48 (unitab)

While in the top Aussie it looks a race, on current form, between JD and John Senden. JD ($7) and Sendo ($4.5 fav) can probably settle for a average first round and improve into the weekend. James Nitties is a player in the market on unitab @ $11 however he wont be playing this week after he told me he 'twitched' a muscle in his neck last week trying to 'rip one 340m on the 9th.' He was probably the only danger to JD or Sendo so if u want to take the $4.5 and $7 i think thats the go.

Best Aussie
John Senden @ $4.5
Jason Day @ $7

For the win its no surprise Kenny Perry sits favourite with his outstanding form and victory a couple weeks ago and being the defending champion. having picked up 3 victories last season he's well on his way to another 3 this season with 2 already. Danger i think is Zach Johnson. After a blistering start to the season he is just starting to strike it consistently again. While David Toms is fast becoming my bogey man. At his latest second behind Perry 2 weeks ago i had 200 on him at $21 at the start and was spewing he didnt win. This weeks field is fairly week it looks like the winner will come from these three or Lucas Glover and Steve Stricker.

My bet Zach Johnson having a morning tee off. I think he can get out there and probably card 7 under to be among the leaders and finish the week off strong

Tournament Win

Well JD has fired out of the blocks with a first round 5 under 66 to be currently 1 off the pace (players still on course) is sitting as equal australian with peter lonard while John Senden had a slowish start with just a one under 70.

As for Zach Johnson to win he has opened with a 2 under 69. threw in a couple of late bogeys which tarnished what looked like a promising score.

Other major players
Kenny Perry 2 under thru 15
David Toms 1 under thru 15
Steve Stricker Even thru 14
Lucas Glover 2 under finished

Jason Day @ $2.75 -5 played well today and a genuine tournament chance
Aaron Baddeley @ $4.50 -3 a somewhat return to form after an average 6 months. dont think he has the 4 rounds in him to finish top aus
Peter Lonard @ $7.00 -4 is playing like crap so this was a surprise. will make cut but think he will finish a long way from the winner. lay him for all u can
Marc Leishman @ $8.00 -3 solid and will probably finish about the same score for the tournament and a top 30-40
Matt Jones @ $9.00 -2 really rough of late after a great debut season last year. will wait to determine his chances til after second round
John Senden @ $9.00 -1 a solid beginning and only four shots behind looks decent odds at 8/1. would prefer 11/1 but will have another lil bit on him
Steve Elkington @ $17.00 -2 a huge knockout chance and at these odds im sure will attract some decent bets. an old timer who consistently shows he can still mix it with the best wwith good finishes. a good second round vital.

Hey fellas sittin up late at night enjoying a night of golf. watching Martin Kaymer winning the Scottish Open. 3 up with 5 to play and looking good. While in America all the Aussies bar Jason Day are on fire in round 3. While Jason Day started his round at 8 under and Tie 5th he is just 1 under for the day thru 9 holes and slipped to a tie for 11th. As i check this Peter Lonard has just carded a double bogey to slip back and equal with JD. Lonard was on fire early being 6 under for the round thru 8 holes but has slipped to 3 under thru 11. Matt Jones, Baddeley and Elkington are all 4 under for their rounds while Marc Leishman is 5 under for the day.

Towards the very top of the leaderboard, halfway leader Darren Stiles holds on to a nervous 2 stroke lead at 14 under from Zach Johnson and Cameron Beckman both 7 under thru 13.

interesting developments

yeah but good on him for getting out there. you can't bag the fella, he's achieved a lot more than most aussie boxers and stepping up a division is one thing but to do it for a world title fight is another.

Hey Sands,
more on this weeks open in a sec.

as for last week a massive effort from Steve Stricker to take out the John Deere. After a very ordinary even par first round a blazing 10under 61 in round 2 leap frogged all but Darron Stiles to see him second through the halfway stage. Solid golf from there in along with an awesome eagle on early in round four saw him hold off a host of players including my pick from the start of the week Zach Johnson.

Johnson was good all week without being great while was good to see Matt Jones return to form and a tie for fourth, he also took out the top aussie and it was great to see all the aussies have a great weekend.

Now onto this weeks open and sands to answer your first question no i dont think tiger just wins.......but it is close. Tiger has a habit of starting poorly in majors. rarely does he shoot better than par. another little habit he has is bogeying or worse on the last hole of his round early in tournaments.

The weather will play a big part this week with miserable 'normal' english weather expected all week long. We havent had a british open for a few years where a +6 or +7 score won and this week could be it. with the bad weather and the fact they've made the rough into a monster. The course is long without being unreachable. but i keep coming back to who can play in the wind???? Tiger is proven as are a few others

Aussie Contingent

Of the aussies Ogilvy has to be the one to get on. sits top on putts per GIR and that stat at a British Open is vital. Is a great striker of the ball and last week's finish at the Scottish Open is a great warm up.

Adam Scott is a tough golfer to get on. Is an outstanding talent who showed last week he can play the european style of golf with a tie fourth. but he also showed that when something goes wrong in a round he cant put it behind him straight away and it affects the rest of his round. last weeks 3rd round 2 over was bad in every way. i watched the round and Scottie had every opportunity to walk off the course with a 4 or 5 under but he lost his head. While he is a good player and belongs in the top 10 in the world he'l never be great.

Rod Pampling is probably my tip. Here's a bloke who just goes out there and gets the job done no matter what the conditions or the course. has an all round game and has performed well in the past in this tournament. Like oogilvy and scott had a good week last week at the Scottish.

Of the A's, Appleby and Allenby im not fans. Appleby is out of form and doesnt really perform in major tournaments. Allenby on the other hand is quite a golfer and rarely puts in a bad performance however he's also proved the only place he wins is on home soil.

Of the rest give a plug to Terry Pilkadaris. has been playing the euro tour for many years now and has been doing it well. while i give him no chance of winning the tournament i think he's juicy odds at $67.00 to finish top aussie (at least for 10 bucks)

Tournament Winner

Not game to pick against Tiger. i found it funny the other day when i overheard someone at my golf club say tiger hadnt really found form since coming back from surgery. i walked over to the bloke and laughed in his face. 9 2009 starts, 3 wins and 8 top 10's and the other was in the WGC matchplay which he never plays his best. Bulls-h-i-t he's not in form. The bloke is a magician.

Anthony Kim. I dont think he has the game to win a British Open. I put him and Rory Mcilroy in very similar categories (Hunter Mahan too) They are all great players who on their day play better one round golf than anyone (including tiger) The difference between these three is Mcilroy is on his home turf. his type of course and his type of weather.

Biggest Danger : Henrik Stenson, another solid young golfer who can fire when needed. Loves the big tournament environment and can win on this type of course.

Defending Champion : Padraig Harrington has won the last two, a third is highly unlikely especially given his latest form. Dont like him at all

ONes To Watch: Ian Poulter finsihed second last year and has an amazing short game. Martin Kaymer absolutely love this kid. remember two years ago i had him going for 8000 in a tournament and he was one in front with two to play, he finished bogey, double bogey and lost by two. that is the only time ive seen him take a backward step. since then he's gotten better and better. will win a major its just a matter of when. Soren Kjeldsen and Soren Hansen. The two Sorens are great euro tour players and while probably dont have the class to win an Open they do have the ability to finish top 5. watch out for them over next few weeks to win one.

Thing to note::::: Three Opens have previously been held at Turnberry, the classic finish which saw Tom Watson down Jack Nicklaus, Greg Normans win and Nick Price in 1994.

That sort of gives you an idea the type of player that wins an Open at Turnberry. That said the Jug will go to Tiger. Poulter Ogilvy Stenson Pampling top 10

Hey Sands,
more on this weeks open in a sec.

as for last week a massive effort from Steve Stricker to take out the John Deere.

So an interesting start to the Open.

Tiger sits tie68th 7 shots adrift of veteran Miguel Angel Jiminez.

Update on my selections

Ogilvy 75 - +5 not promising after what was an ok start at 2 under thru 5 before two double bogeys started his slide
Pampling 74 - +4 was behind the 8ball from the start made a lone birdie at 17
Pilkadaris 68 - -2 my knockout aussie hope shot an impressive 2 under and a few more like that will be good.
Tiger 71 - +1 His usual first round although not quite as bad. this far off the pace no problem but having that many golfers in front of him is. just couldnt get on a roll
Mcilroy 69 - -1 played well for a solid opening round. this kids got loads of talent.
Stenson 71 - -1 another ordinary start to a major but a player who can pull out a 64 tomoro. 2 late birdies in the round recovered so he will be confident from here on in.
Poulter 75 - +5 nothing went right last night for this fella. couldn't even get one birdie.
Kaymer 69 - -1 another solid performance but really needs to consolidate position in second round. 67 or better to be in it.
The sorens 68 - both hansen and kjeldsen got off to promising starts with 2 under pars 68 however both will be dissapointed after being 5 and 4 under respectively during their rounds...

good luck. Curtis and Furyk favourite of mine

golf and greyhounds. been playing golf for 15 years. went to Kooralbyn International School with Adam Scott, Steven Bowditch, and have been mates with Jason Day ever since we started school together in year 7 etc. Love following the different tours around the world. I've played with a lot of amateurs and pro's over the years and talent wise there arent too many with more than Bowditch although a local amateur would have a better mental game. before he went to america i used to play with him every second week and it was nothing for him to shoot 62 on any course we played. JD on the other hand was never one to shoot low scores like ur 61,62 or 63's but he was a consistent 4 or 5 under player all the time, amazing short game and great mental game. Scottie was in his last year when we got to school but everyone knew he was going to be good. absolute pure swing.

well it wouldnt be a british open if aaaa didnt hit the fan.

Ogilvy, poulter last and fourth last.

Curtis follows a 65 with a 10 over 80 to more than likely miss cut.

Mike weir tries to do similar following a 67 with an 78.

while an unknown Japanese fella has the lead at 6 under midway thru a second round.

someone tell me what the aaaa is going on lol

oh and whats the tiger going to do????

well an interesting night in the Open Championship which saw Tiger lose some massive bets by missing the cut.. Ol Tom Watson still leads along with Steve Marino while major championship winners like Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh sit just two back. Then of course there are your young guns. Ross Fisher, Jeff Overton, Martin Kaymer and Camilo Villegas. How will they fare tomoro, will they succumb to pressure. While lurking in the shadows you have seasoned veterans Westwood, Cink, Cabrera and Furyk. But the man to watch and one of the most consistent players without ever winning too much. Sergio Garcia. Has shown more control over the past two days than everyone bar the leader Marino. If his putter can fire a little over the weekend he could hold the Claret Jug aloft.

Predicting -4 the winning score with only 5 players finishing the tourney under par.

Then of course you look to drugs, alcohol, gambling and mayhem, yes its quite clear John Daly has made the cut at the Open again. he sits tie 22nd at even par and will bring a smile to the face if he turns back the clock.!!!!!
