Sorry to be so thick but I was born that way. The other day I manged to get a bet on Betfew for the place and was pleasantly surprised when I got a return while I did my dough on the Tab's no third dividend ruling. Can someone remind me what are the circumstances that are needed for Betfew to payout when the Tab's don't. (It certainly makes Betfew a better option in those cases.)

Not necessarily.
The dividends paid on the Totes would almost certainly be higher than those on the other service.

Betfair will pay out on 3 places if eight or more horses are originally nominated for the race.

For example, if eight horses have been entered, and four are then scratched they will pay out on the three-placed horses. I believe if the final field has 3 runners or less then there will be no Place betting.

As moeee has stated, the dividends can be very skinny compared to other betting agencies, even though the strike rate can be quite high.

Thanks Michaelg. That was the answer I couldn't remember. I still don't understand however. Are there other betting agencies that pay out in this scenario? Cause Qtab and Nsw tote sure don't!

As far as I know, Betfair is the only one that pays out in this scenario, whilst the other betting agencies will only pay a place divvy on the winner and runner-up. However, if there are 8 horses entered, and there is a late scratching so that 7 or less start in the race then there will be 3 place divvies.
