At 65 I must admit I have had my share of ups & downs. Had cancer fought and won.But who knows what the future holds in that area. Been recently retrenched (thrown on the scrapheap a few years ago). Seen my investments devistated along with my super, by beauracractic bungling, inept management and greedy executives.
Something I am sure a lot of you are more than familiar with. So I had a lot of time on my hands. I turned inpart to two of my true loves (apart from my beautiful wife) of The american Indian and Horses- in particular the "Sport of Kings", horseracing.
In my youth and all through my life I have been trying to find the "Holy Grail", I have tried all sorts of schemes, systems, methods, ideas, concepts call them what you may I have tried them all. Still my bank manager will not say thankyou.
I am sure you have all been there, and a few of you have found your own way to almost touch the "Grail" and if I beleive what I read (and I do) some of you are doing just fine.
With the free time on my hands I searched the web for all manner and means in an effort to get ahead. I found this wonderful site and I must admit I am amazed at the amount of meaningful information that is freely available. I have sat there in the background and read, watched devoured, sifted, sorted all the information at hand. But still have not found a constructive and profitable way of backing horses sufficiantly to supplement my pension, and build a sizable bank for my wife to live comfortably when my time has passed.
However, I may have found a method of "laying" which will more than cover my needs (I hope). Because of all the information that has been freely given and those of you with data basis that have freely helped others to arrive at a meaningful decision regarding there own methods. I will soon be trialing my method on this site (if ok with management).
I have a few gliches to sort through, then I plan to trial for three months Oct-Dec before hitting it real time in the new year. I have researched this over the last 2years and 9 months, and it shows good results on past information, however we all know the proof in any success is it's being able to perform equally in real time.
This trial period will hopefully bear that out. You are all welcome to join me on this journey (and hopefully profit from it) for it will be some journey, I can assure you it will be a roler coaster of an adventure, as we attempt to reach the "Little Grail".
It will be "Free" to use by ALL, it will all be there to see (no hidden adjenda) I will accept conservitive criticism, any help will be gratly appreaciated, but I will not entertain sarcasm or snide remarks of any form, life is too short.
Luck be with you, back before 1OCT
ps I will call it "Patience" for you will need the patience of job.
it is about making "lunch money" so we can live, making pocket money so we can have a beer and making a bank (hopefully to assist in retirement)
Kind Regards

Hi, Place2win.
Over the successful 2 years and nine months did you apply Betfair or TAB prices when testing your method? Not knowing if it has a price range/limit etc I've seen some instances where the Betfair final trade price has outdistanced its TAB price, particularly from around the $8 mark and higher.
I once used to bet all horses at $7 and over to a particular cut-off price depending on field size, and I remember once having a $18 winner that paid $9 on NSW TAB. I don't recall why I stopped (maybe because I prefer laying) but I know I was in profit. My point is that if you tested the system with TAB prices then the results may not be as good as recorded.
I hope this is not the case, and I'm looking forward to when you start trialling the method here. Hopefully it will be successful - then we might humourously have to call you Place2lose because the selections would thankfully have lost.
Good luck.
Michael.

Hi Michael,
Careful with the word "successful", 'good result's' is what I said, hopefully it will be successful in the future.
My trialing was purely done with TAB divs (UNITAB) as I don't know if betfair have an arcive of past australian results (If someone knows if they do and where to go for them I will check it against my records.
Whilst there is possibly some pricing concern TAB viz BETFAIR I am confident the relative price range involved will not show up too many dicrepancies. Shortly I will give a schematic of past results which I have allowed a respective 20% reduction factor to be entertained due to the long hours of candle burning and the possibility of negative results from Betfair pricing.
On the one hand we may not get our price so therefore no bet, on the other is the chance to receive a better (less liability) price.

Hi, Place2win.
I'm under the impression that past Betfair prices can be obtained. I seem to think that a forumite informed us of this.
Some time ago I recorded the final trade price for a few races that were run that very day and then compared them to the prices Betfair put on their site. There were a few discrepencies and I asked Betfair about this. They replied that if at the "jump" all of the best available price is matched then they show the next available price.
For example, if the available Lay price is $5.90 at the jump, and all of it is matched then their records will show the next available price of $6.00. So if you do calculate your results on this, then its quite possible with real betting you might have got the price at $5.90 even though Betfair will show $6.00. Therefore if you do obtain past Betfair prices, your records using their prices might be better if real money had been bet.

If you are finding that site slow, you could also download the BAT program, its also free, and contains exactly the same info as that link I suggested above. It may run a bit better being a standalone program, havent tried it myself, but could be worth a shot.
Heres the link

If that link is not allowed/removed by moderators, just google Betfair Advantage tool, and you will find it easy enough.

Looks like time to eat a bit of crow, may have come out of the blocks a little to quick with my aspirations.
No Betfair lay prices for most of 2007 so can't quantify there.
For 2008/2009 am getting an avg of around 30% swing against my results
in some cases it is higher, but in those cases there would not have been a bet as price not matched, however this in turn reduces the number of bets.
On the other side of the ledger I have also had some good swings.
It is time to go back and re-calculate with new information at hand.
I most humbly appologise for the expections I gave.

Prices on the BAT. are the last won's available so can be missleading price can and do swing a great deal. eg. a horse that finished trading at $4 (what you see on BAT) could have traded at $3 earlier or $5.
Betfair do have all prices (matched bets) for all races, you need an account with them and have 100 points to view them.

Thankyou Crackone, now have a Betfair account, so will be watching over the next couple of days.
Will be checking on the the swings within relative price range to determine ongoing viability.
Will also colate period 01jan08 - current date +/- factors between Unitab/Betfair
to see if re-calculated results are still viably profitable.
The period 2007 appears lost with no Betfair LAY trading results up to mid Nov 2007.
Am hopeful that if the liabilty (blow out) factor can remain within 20% long-term
then we should see some good results, albeit 20% lower than I have projected.
The worst scenero is if the % factor grows past 30%, therefore negating a bet and these non-bets become prevelant, the turnover reduces, reducing longterm profit also.
Time will tell

I will run a test starting 19sep thru end of month. This will hopefully determine the viability of my LAY method (Named' Patience'). Remember this is a long term proposition we are not and cannot be pressed for a "quick Buck".
1) We want some Lunch Money (We need sustenance)
2) We want some Pocket Money(For personal needs)
3) We want to build a Bank (For future speculation)
4)We bet 1 unit on the selection(s)
5)The unit can be any amount of your choosing (For me it is $100)
6)We bet each race for each meeting race 1 thru 4 only (as listed on UNITAB site) from First meeting listed to the meeting preceeding the WA meeting. We do not bet any WA meeting nor any meeting following(Predominately late start meetings twilight/evening).
7)On any day where there is no WA meeting we may bet on a late meeting if we cannot guarantee a minimum of 2 betting propositions from other listed meetings.(However we DO NOT BET NIGHT MEETINGS )
8)Whilst we bet thru the listed meetings we bet in time order not listed order.
9)At this stage I have deterimed a Stop if 2 units up at any given point(flexible)
10)There will be days where less than two units is returned and days where unfortunately a loss is registered.
That's it for now Back with some contenders soon

Hi AngryPixie,
My original MAX price is/was $2.30 (however do to the sometimes wild swings I am at present allowing up to 20% out from that)
The stop at 2 units (flexible) is a personal thing, I am happy with 2($200) per day. Remember I am not about a killing, but lunch money, pocket money, Bank.
I Believe all can be attained by maintaing only those meetings stipulated, that is no to say you can;t continue on. However bear in mind that if things get ugly the more you try the uglier it can become. Night meetings have not been profitable either.

Hopefully the above link will work, it relates to meetings held 11Jan2008, in particular race 2 at Pt Macquarie.
Please review the Betfair Back/Lay prices anomaly and the back price relative to the TAB(s) prices.
On this particular day my LAY would have been Langfibian, but I would not have entertained it at price quoted (nor any of them at that price). This type of anomally is not an isolated case.
Hence do I consider this a no bet situation, or consider I may have got close to TAB price at some stage (for research purpose)
Similiar situation applies Canberra Race 2 No 6 and all Lay prices.
Infact the whole day appears to be out of whack??

It would be handy to have the final 60 seconds of Betfair trading.
The actual Final Betfair Trade Price is non conclusive, however I have accepted it as the position of my transaction, albeit I believe we could have improved the results.
The actual trades are made until a 2 unit profit is attained or all of the first four races are accessed and bets made accordingly.
In cases where I stopped at 2 units profit prior to the end of all races, there were only six occasions where we could have traded past the profit, on two of these, no change, two returned negatives of one unit and two returned further profit of 3 units (a total of 4 units profit if trading out).

If we add the 'trade Outs' mentioned above $400 = $1880
I am not sure I want to go into this much detail for the remaining 20 months to date, but I will do a few more and consolidate the others.
I am sure if you peruse the Unitab/Betfair results you will see where I am at.
Didn't quite come out the way I had expected.
For each date the figures after 'lay' is the lay return or liability the last two figures for each line represent the (+/-) win/loss and Balance.

Regards
ShaneAngryPixie, further to your request.
Maximum price is $2.30 but allow up to 20%+ on the lay side
If selection is less than max, say $1.90 the again allow up to 20%+ on the lay side.
The stopping at two (2) as I said is purely personal, I believe it keeps us within a restraint of not becoming over zealous. If we can manage 2 units per day that equates to avg of 60 units per month X by your outlay per unit.
Further I have found that trying to surpass this has not been greatly profitable (however I will stand corrected if this should provee otherwise)
If you check my results for jan08 we only achieved an increase of $400 by trading out. I also believe the last four/five races per meeting do not give us a good opportunity selection wise within the price range.
Also I find Night meetings to be generally bad betting propositions at the best of times, however as laying options that may well be the opposite.
My initial testing/research took me into all facets however I found initially that the earlier races on the card and those that start at the earlier time frame to be more successful in returning profit as the day progressed the profit started to reduce.
At the end of the day (my day) I am happy with the situation at present, I get a profit I am content with (we would all like more). If time permits I will look at further testing, but as you realise this form of testing takes months and I am not privalidged with quick fix solutions.
Hope that helps

From experience I believe turnover is your friend when laying. It'll be a slow old slog in your target price range with so few lays per day. :(
Have you considered backing your selections when they don't qualify as lays ;)
I'm sure it'll turn around. Here's hoping.

AngryPixie,
Thankyou for your response, and considered opions.
I may yet get down that track re-turnover, at the moment it is baby steps
understanding and formulating current situation.
Hence the reason for testing only while I see how it progresses, I will also look at the Back possibilities.
To-day had an interesting situation; R2 at Sunshine Coast, Glacial Miss was quoted at $2.00 Unitab, then shortened to approx $1.90 before drifting back and forth between the two and finishing back at $1.90. Whilst on Betfair it shortened to $1.70 then drifted quite dramactically to around $2.38 before settling at $2.34. In this situation I probably would lay at low $1.70 and bet back at somewhere in the $2-2.30 range to come out in front which ever way it went, or cover the lay and profit on the win. This i could see with my minimum bets, but if I had numerous bets in the one race and races either side I think it would be exceptionally hard to keep track. Food for thought.
By the way (no excuse) I missed advising another contender in R4 at Dubbo No 5 Trydon at $2.20 Unitab it lost this would have squared the day or given a small profit.
Thankyou extremely for your input.

For future testing purposes, to ensure we all see the same
contender the following applies.
A contender will be one that is priced $1.70(min) to $2.30(max)
on Unitab 2mins before jump.
We then must be able to obtain that price (or less) on the lay side
(Betfair) with option to accept upto 20% from original Unitab price.
(ie. Unitab $2.30 Betfair $2.76 or unitab $1.90 Betfair $2.18)
The only exception is in the lower scale $1.70 this is min price
acceptable (no exceptions)

We made $300 lunch money $300 pocket money
and best of all $1560 for the bank.
To Date all months (5) have been in profit.
My original workings (not including Betfair comparison)
had ALL 12 months in profit -Total $12480 Avg $1040pm.
Due to the immense amount of time it takes to colate the
data I will not do the remaining months, however I will do the
month of May 09 which originally showed a loss of (7.5pts) $750.
This was the only month since Jan09 to do so. I might do sep09
also as this month is break even at present.

at Melb/Adel we will treat all with caution.
At this stage there are no likely contenders
