I'm new to laying and was wondering how to bet.
My bank is $1000 and i plan to use 2.5% of the bank, but I'm not sure as I want to limit my loses and build my bank.
Any suggestions.

Benny, I think an important factor to be considered is the price of the horse to be layed. Maria, a very successful layer, uses three tiers of the percentage of her bank, depending on the price of the horse.
Are you planning to limit the price?

Yes. no higher than $5.00

Benny, I'm currently testing a laying system which has so far been very profitable - 46 successes from 50 races.
My cut-off price is $6.80 and I bet level stakes. However if it continues I intend to apply a stakings plan for higher profits, maybe 2% of the bank.
2.5% of your bank is $25, therefore your max libility with a cut-off price of $5.00 is $100 which would reduce your bank by 10%. Personally I would test the system (I assume you haven't?) with a much smaller stake until you are confident the method is successful. Only then would I think of a stakings plan of a percentage of the bank.
But of course, everyone's different, and my conservatism may not be preferable with other layers.

I would recommend 1.25%
This allows for 20 outs at $5.00
Here is a Maria type staking plan one may like to check out.
1.01-6.00 Bet 1%
6.01-8.00 Bet .6%
8.00-10.00 Bet .4%
This is good for approx 25 outs.
