It was Peter Moody's turn last week to lament an injury to his top class unbeaten filly Black Caviar. He noted that what makes a champion, in any sport, is often what brings about their undoing.
''You get your blokes that don't try and look after themselves and they never get injured,'' he said. ''But then the really good ones push themselves through pain thresholds to go as hard at it as they can.''
Tomorrow at Caulfield, Weekend Hussler, the 2007-08 Horse Of The Year, has his first start for 53 weeks in the group 1 Oakleigh Plate.
Forget that no horse since Dual Choice in 1972 has carried as much weight as his 58.5-kilogram impost to victory in the 1100-metre sprint. It is the long break due to serious fetlock problems coupled with the horse's desire to run faster than his rivals no matter the pain that are his biggest obstacles.
