Ladies and Gentlemen your help please
I live in the country Victoria and don't have access to city newspapers until almost midday everyday.
I therefore have difficulty in getting opening prices other than online.
Most major city newspapers have racing pages online but i never seem to be able to get the 5 major city racemeetings in one paper.
Are the opening prices consistent across all newspapers?
Is there a racing site (free) on the internet where I can find opening prices which are comparable to the city newspapers? I have seen the Way2bet site. How does that sites opening pricesmeasure up?
Your assistantance would be appreciated.
Regards
Ted

Hi Ted,
you can get all paper prices at the Herald Sun -
http://heraldsunformguide.realviewtechnologies.com/
Hope that helps,
Den

Thanks Den
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I get the Herald Sun online as well as a paper later in the day but I find that it does not contain all the races meeting for say, a Saturday.
Maybe I need to look individually at each States main sporting paper containing the form guides?
How good are the weekly newspapers devoted to just horse racing eg The Winning Post and their opening prices (if they have them) in comparison to the daily form guides?
Any comments please people?
Regards
Ted

if you check the 2 links supplied and compare say pakenham r1 today you will notice that there is a significant difference between the pre-post odds quoted
as to which is the better -- i wouldn't have a clue
at a guess i'd say that the pre-post odds are computer generated and don't necessarily reflect the actual market (money)
whereas, the "official" bookmaker opening price does reflect the early market and is consistant -- these are readily available from various bookmakers approx 15 minutes before jump -- i think that IAS might be an exception in that their opening prices are proprietary
good luck!
i also would be interested in what others have to say :)

a slight tangent, but I did heaps of research a few years back on pre post prices,
the conclusion was that overall the performance in terms of winners was almost exactly the same as the actual fav. even though in some cases the nags were different (if you see what I mean)
The important thing though is to always use the same source for the pre post fav, I use www.ozbet.com i.e. WA Tab Form (on line) whos' pre post prices are from commercial ratings converted to prices so I'm told.

thx partypooper
gr8 feedback!
regards
ps i think that should be www.ozbet.com.au (http://www.ozbet.com.au)
pps interesting -- comparing pakenham r1 -- the odds quoted on tabform are the same as way2bet -- looks like these are the "official" AAP pre post prices

Thanks to Shaun, PartyP & Ixlato for your thoughts
I am really looking for a comparison of opening prices of newspapers (eg The Herald Sun) and online prices that are put up ealier than just before the race.
Betchoice and Ozebet have the same opening prices but these differ from the newspapers. I am looking for a free site online that gives me opening prices earlier than newspapers.
Here it is 7.15 am I have the Herald Suns opening prices for today and the Way2bet opening prices. I have read in other threads where comments have been made that Way2bet opening prices are "all over the place".
Are there any other free online early opening prices that I might be able compare?
Sorry for being a nuisance

there seems to be some confusion in your terminology -- you keep referring to pre post odds (PPO) as opening prices
you can't have an "opening price" until a market has been established and if you have a look at NSW TAB you will see at approx 7:45am that there is only $17 in the win pool -- that is why the "official" bookmaker opening prices are not given until abt 15 minutes before jump -- earlier for big races where there is plenty of money around
PPO by necessity are computer generated and are ratings converted to odds -- the way2bet site publishes the AAP PPO -- AAP have been producing PPO for decades and supply these to most newspapers -- however, it seems that some newspapers produce there own PPO -- this is why you see a variation
other sites just produce ratings (not converted to odds) eg NSW TAB SKYFORM these are free if registered
hope this helps!

ixlatO, as I said I did some extensive research on PP prices a few years ago, I was and still am fascinated by the fact that anyone without any knowledge of horse racing at all can back 30%+ winners just by backing the PP fav.
I actually made phone calls to various publications and as you say most where Computer generated, however there were some that were actually bookies opinion prices, but alas, I just can't remember which ones.
The overall result by the way was about 15% LOT, which is what you would expect I guess, by applying extensive filters I got this down to about 5%LOT, but much less action, that was b4 best tote and BF so just maybe there days it could turn into a tiny profit.

thx for that partypooper!
yes very interesting -- out of curiosity i did a quick check covering the 1st 6mths of this year
the SP fav (metro meetings) N=1885 SR31.8% POT -11.9%
IF it is justified to only look at Melb Syd and Bris then
N=1277 SR32.7% POT -9.7%
IF it is justified to only consider those that have had at least 1 run in their current campaign then
N=1060 SR33.8% POT -5.4%
IF it is justified to exclude heavy tracks then
N=944 SR34.7% POT -3.0%
IF it is justified to only consider last start winners then
N=355 (approx 15 bets/wk) SR38.6% POT +1.3%
the POTs are based on NSW TAB dividends
i guess this lends some weight to your general conclusions
i posted these figues out of interest not for debate

Thanks Ixlato and others
I am fairly new on here and I am sorry about my confusing terminology.
Step !...I was looking for comparable sites on line where i could find early
prices (eg Way2Bet) and compare these with Herald Suns published
prices.
Sounds like the "early" prices are computered generated.
Step 2...Then I wanted to compare these with early prices from Betchoce or IAS.
eg. Geelong R1 H6 Tierno....Herald Sun $2.00 ..Way2Bet $2.50...Betchoice $2.80

the following is extracted from the AAP site...
Australian Associated Press (http://www.aap.com.au) (AAP) is Australia's national press agency and has been providing news and information to the Australian media since 1935. Almost all of Australia's main news media including 800 newspapers, 50 dailies, five free-to-air television networks, two pay TV networks, and 550 radio stations use AAP data and rely upon us for accuracy
also, they sell what they call "NetForm ratings" on a subscription package (eg $485pa)
this explains why most newspapers publish the same PPO and why you're having difficulty finding "different" free PPO
if the Herald Sun is publishing different PPO then i guess they consider them to be superior and reason to buy their newspaper
for those who follow PP fav you got an excellent dividend for Tierno today!

Yes, I did have some better results I remember when I used 3 different sources and all 3 agreed on the PP fav.
