I don't know what is possible with betfair website as i don't use it, i use Gruss but you have 2 options, lay to payout or lay to liability.

Payout 100

Prices Stake - Loss
3.00 - 33.33 - 35.56
5.00 - 20.00 - 35.56
9.00 - 11.11 - 35.56

Formula (payout/price)

Liability 100

Prices Stake - Loss
3.00 - 50.00 - 32.50
5.00 - 25.00 - 37.50
9.00 - 12.50 - 25.00

Formula (payout/(price-1))

The best is the bet to price.
e.g.
Divide horses price into a take out figure.
There can be 1-5 horses , it does not matter .

You also have a greater chance to recover more quickly because it does not over load the shorties like betting to odds does (Liability)

example
Price $3.00 in to take out fig say $12.00 = 4.00 O/L

Betting to liability also known as betting to odds, it is more expensive to use especially on odds on horses.
