Hello Martin, Carol and Zev.
Just looking at your tips in race 5 at Melbourne reminds me of my impressionable years in racing when good quality stayers were able to sprint well fresh. This doesn't seem to happen much nowadays. One of my all time favourites was Foxseal who could win from 1000m to 2 miles.
Best wishes.

Several Melbourne Cup winners were also able to resume in, and win at, 1000m races.

Cheers,
Martin

Noel,

After winning the Melbourne Cup Hyperno won over 1600+ and placed over 1400+, never shorter. In his entire career his shortest winning journey was 1400m.

Unless some horse in the 19th Century did it Martin's assertion is clearly false.

Hammers.

The King almost won the Cup, he was able to win over 1000m. Can't think of any others though.

Mark,

Kingston Town won over 1200, never 1000.

The best would have to be Malua in the 1880's. Won a Melbourne Cup and an Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and as an older horse won the Grand National Steeple over 3 miles+.

I'd like to see River Dove win a GN in a couple of years!

I reckon i'm with Hammers on this one, unless someone can come up with a horse or two.

Percentum,
Foxseal was one of my all time favourites along with Luther's Luck and Super Impose.

I remember every time I went to Sandown (on track) to see Luther's Luck run - he won for me (some 19 times)

Those are the kinds of horses you never forget.

Foxseal, Red Handed, and Light Fingers are 3 that instantly come to mind over the past 38 years. I have only been following racing since 1965 therefore cannot comment on what happened before then, but I have heard that this was quite common then.

Martin

Martin,

1. Foxseal never won the Melb Cup - shortest winning journey 1400m.
2. Light Fingers - shortest winning journey after winning Melb Cup 1800m
3. Red Handed - shortest winning journey after Melb Cup 2000m.

Best performers re versatility since 1965 probably Jeune, Saintly, Let's Elope, At Talaq who all won the CF Orr Stks 1400m G1 after winning the Melb Cup. 1000m winners - definately none.
