Quinella Formula

Does anyone know how the TAB works out the aproximate quinella divs? I always thought it was the 2 win divs multiplied and then halved but thats not right.

Approx Quinella divs on the TAB are worked out the same way as all their divs - they add up the pool total, take out their cut (about 20% from memory for Quinellas) and then calculate the divs based on the number of units bet on each combination. Eg. If there was $1000 in the pool and $40 of that was bet on the combination 1-2 then the div would be:

$1000 * 80% = $800 (amount available)
$800/$240 = $20

So approx div for 1-2 would be $20

Sorry, I should have put more thought into how the TAB operates before making my post. Thank for your reply.

I used to have a program called "Simply Quinellas" or something by Wizbooks which Iv'e since lost, but i remember it would give you the quinella odds for each combination after you enter the prices for each of the runners. That's the formula I was after.

Nevertheless, I've found it in an old book titled "Commonsense Punting" by Roger Dedman.

Heres the formula:
1/x(y+1) + 1/y(x+1)

The formular that Simply Quinellas worked on was this .

Price of the shorter priced of the two horses minus -1, multiplied by the price of the longer priced horse then divided by 2 .

E.g. If you had two horses at $5.00 & $7.00

4*7=28/2=$14 return for $1.00

If you are serious about quinella betting,strongly suggest you get hold of a copy of Malcolm Knowles "Quinellas"booklet,or indeed the whole series of his booklets.They are top shelf stuff.

It is stated in that Quinella book that races with exactly 9 runners are the best value.
