Sunday 13th April

R6: Zoloto - classy, well drawn & not badly weighted with only 6kg above limit. Kalgoorlie's recent city form not all that bad, not well drawn but does have the services of Clint Harvey. Secret Mentor loves this course & seems well weighted. At A Loose End also a chance but a bit suspect over the last 100m.

R7: Top run by Handsome Colours last start at only 2nd start in WA. Easy Conquest will improve on his last start effort & is smart on his day. Expect Silk 'n' Steel to go well first-up with Clint Harvey on top. Nice last start win by True Loot at only her second start.

mystery morn looks a chance in race 5

Hi topsy99, agree Mystery Morn a good chance in race 5. Well drawn on the fence and should be able to lead or race just off the pace. However there does appear to be plenty of other chances including 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 14.

Looks to be potentially a lot of pace in race 6 (AHA Cup) El Gordo. For that reason would also include My Pass (11). Well drawn and may get a good trail around midfield, and with a bit of luck should be getting home strongly at the business end.

Congrats Perth Placegetter, great when they get up at such juicy odds.

Also congrats to BettyBoop & Cosmo, who were first on their respective threads to steer some of us in the direction of Freemason & Polar Success.

Also thanks to all those other forum members who are generous enough to post their selections & views, even if they all don’t win  – that’s racing!

as an ex goldfielder i have to say the round is a brillant time of year.

i think blevvo has the form to win and win well.

Agree with you umrum, (1) Blevvo does look hard to beat. Locally trained (8) Kyoshi & (13) Jashar Boy could add value to the multiples.

Sandgroper
22nd August 2003, 02:06 PM
Blevvo – didn’t fire last preparation, but showing better form this time around.
Ran on well last start beaten 1.5 lengths behind Tribula over 1300m, at second run following a spell. Suited by the step up in distance, well drawn and should be able to take up a forward position. Likely type to take out the treble. Strong chance.

Dexian – Reasonable run last start, first run back from a spell. Last preparation took a few runs before finding form. Well drawn and if forward enough a definite chance.

Hardrada – well drawn and all the better for 2 runs since a spell. Both runs this time well below best but a good chance if he can repeat Lee Steere Stakes / Railway Stakes performances.

Prince Of Pop – 10YO still racing well. Ran a close 3rd in this race last year behind Eastern Standard. Draw against him and may get back in the field. A place chance.

Son Of Vasac – has had 2 runs back from a spell. Good effort last start after missing the kick. Can be a little inconsistent, but is not badly drawn and would be a strong chance on best form.

Suspicion – 5YO mare whose last run (over 1300m) I rated as her best. Is versatile and can handle the extra trip. Draw no help as she likes to lead or race on the pace. If she can get a cushy run, will be in the finish.

Eutectic – another not well drawn, but does have the speed to take a forward position. An EW chance on best form.

Kyoshi – Has been set for this race and could surprise. Likes Kalgoorlie, nicely drawn and does drop considerably in weight on recent starts.

Priceless Matt – Consistent 4YO trained by Fred Kersley. Has the early speed to overcome a poor barrier draw. 2 runs at Kal for 2 x 2nds. An EW chance.

Angel Lea – scratched.

Aussie Strike – Last run (win over 2200) rated as his best. Should lead or sit on the pace. With the right run an EW chance.

Frank The Bank – Last run almost back to best, so room for further improvement. Not well drawn but has the early speed to overcome. 1600m about as far as he likes. With the right run a definite EW chance.

Jashar Boy – Well drawn and has the early pace to take up a forward position. Likes Kal and should be in the finish at the business end.

Kalgoorlie – Ran 6th in this race last year. Although well drawn looks a little out of depth. A rough place chance.

My Pass – Goes well at Kal but best form over slightly shorter distances. A rough place chance.

Star Of Vain – Good runs last 2 – running on well over 1650m at Belmont. May get back in the field from an awkward draw. An EW chance.

Violent Wind – Performs well at Kal but only an outside chance. Meets Kyoshi 3.5kg worse for a 0.25 length defeat over 1760m last start.

Rural Thunder – another who performs well at Kal and has the speed to overcome an awkward draw. A place chance.

Loch Wood – Has had some success at Kal and has the early speed to overcome a wide draw. Best form over slightly shorter distances but has a place chance with the right run.

Precious Plume – Badly drawn and would appear to be racing well out of his depth.

Mint Play - Loves Kal where he has won 5 races. Well beaten in the city last start and although a little unlucky on that occasion and is down in weight on recent starts looks to have only a rough place chance.

Keep an eye on the race-day track condition as it has been raining heavily in Perth the last couple of days and if hitting the goldfields could affect the track.

If the race is run truly should be pace on, with the likes of Suspicion, Priceless Matt, Aussie Strike and Jashar Boy (and Rural Thunder / Loch Wood – if either get a start) all potentially aspiring for the lead.

Good news courtesy the WATURF Club

A satisfactory track inspection of the Kalgoorlie racing surface has confirmed the Coolgardie Cup meeting on Saturday August 23 will continue as scheduled.

It was feared the meeting may have to be abandoned to due heavy rainfall but steward John Biggs gave the track the all clear following an inspection at 3:00pm on Friday August 22.

A further inspection will be conducted, as is standard procedure, at 7:00am on Saturday morning.

Coolgardie Cup winner Son Of Vasac has been penalised 1.5kg for the Boulder Cup.

David O'Heare weighed out a kilo above the gelding's handicap of 53.5kg in the Coolgardie Cup but there were no other senior rider free to replace him.

Blevvo gave a courageous effort under his 58kg to recover from a severe knock and finished a barnstorming fifth in the Coolgardie Cup. The Fruit 'N' Veg champion is reported to be leaving for Melbourne next week, to run in the $253,000 John F Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 13.

Suspicion may have her last race when she contests the Boulder Cup. A decision will be made after the race on whether she is retired to stud.

Plans for Mr Tambourineman to compete in the Kalgoorlie Cup have been scraped, the horse will go to the paddock after next Saturday's $42,500 Belmont Park Cup.

There was a 12-minute delay to the Coolgardie Cup start when stewards searched jockeys with a metal detector behind the barriers - very ineresting

I'm tipping (1) Son of Vasac to take out the second leg of the treble. Won well last start & can handle the step up in distance.

Main danger (2) Wool Zone, to be ridden by Paul Harvey. Should be pelting home.

Expect the oldtimer (3) Prince of Pop to put in another honest performance. Nice run last start, meets the topweight 0.5kg better, beaten only .75L.

My longshot - (15) Swiss Echo. Ex NSW gelding fitter for recent racing & looks well weighted.

umrum
5th September 2003, 11:04 AM
i'm tipping wool zone. Got the harvey factor. Adaptable type of horse.distance suits. Beat Mr Tambourineman last start who is a smart galloper. Missed a run due to wet track so may benefit from this run. Still got him on top.

Then the peoples champ - prince of pop. only query is the distance at his age. loves the track and been a great horse. Should be running on strongly.

Then priceless matt. Kalgoorlie is generally a leaders and on pace track. He will give backers a great sight. Whether he can hold on in this very good company is the question. Go well.

Son of vasac and eutectic - dead heat for fourth.

Sandgroper
5th September 2003, 12:47 PM
Agree Son Of Vasac can take out the 2nd leg of the treble. Effectively gone up only 0.5kg for his winning the Coolgardie Cup (carried overweight), has won over 1800m at Ascot, also placed over 2200m same venue.

They have big plans for Wool Zone. Has 49kg in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Set for this race and may have the services of the pontiff – subject to a stay of proceedings being granted in Harvey’s appeal to the Racing Penalties Appeal Tribunal against an 18-day careless riding suspension. Third run back from a short spell, should be just about cherry ripe.

The old boy Prince Of Pop, agree distance a bit of a query but wasn’t beaten far last start in the Coolgardie Cup.

Suspicion copped a few checks in running last start and not beaten far. Another who may be a query over the distance. Was beaten 4 lengths by Son Of Vasac over 1800m in December 02, but does meet that horse 3kg better on that run.

Eutectic is another who is a query over the distance. Beaten in a photo finish by Son Of Vasac in the Coolgardie Cup. Meets that horse 1kg better assuming Jackman can ride at 53kgs.

Agree with umrum re Priceless Matt. Does not look to be a lot of pace in this race so could get a cushy run up near the lead and if so would be hard to run down. Meets Son Of Vasac 0.5kg better on the weights for a 0.5 length defeat in the Coolgardie Cup.

Jashar Boy not the best of luck in the Coolgardie Cup, although well beaten. Query at the distance but still a chance with a soft run in transit.

Key To Cash likely to be outclassed.

Loch Wood likely leader. Another query at the distance and only a chance if left alone in front.

Morocco Bound lightly raced with some good recent Kal form. A rough show.

Precious Plume well beaten in the Coolgardie Cup. Would have to improve many lengths to be any chance in this race.

Space Age ex eastern states gelding who has run some reasonable races at Belmont. Not sighted in 3 recent races in Broome. Would have to improve considerably to be any chance.

Star Of Vain a good EW chance. Two starts back ran 3rd to Wool Zone beaten 0.5 length over 1650m at Belmont running on well. Meets Wool Zone 0.5Kg better in this race.

Swiss Echo another ex eastern states galloper. Not won in 7 starts in the west, been a bit in and out since coming to the west, best run 4 starts back at Belmont when 2nd over 1675m beaten 0.75 lengths carrying 60.5kg. Could surprise and I note Rogan Josh has selected as his longshot.

Violent Wind not a bad run in the Coolgardie Cup when beaten 4.25 lengths after receiving a heavy bump on straightening. Extra distance in his favour and could be placed at good odds.

Mint Play Loves Kal where he has won 5 races. Well beaten in his last city start and although a little unlucky on that occasion and is down in weight on recent starts looks to have only a rough place chance.

Mr. Guilty meets Mint Play 4.5kgs worse for a 0.5 length defeat over that horse over 1600m at Kal last start. Likely to be outclassed.

Santa D'Or 34 starts (all runs at Kal) for 6 wins. Last start well beaten by Mr. Guilty. Likely to be outclassed.

Did end up having a tiny bit EW on Space Age, Paddy. On his best Belmont run, rated some 3 lengths behind my top rated horse, so the 200/1 was too much to ignore, even allowing for Space Age's poor recent form up north.

As it turns out, the horse was suffering from ulcers (reported in this mornings press) which they obviously fixed. Too bad it was not common knowledge before the event!

Extracts courtesy The West Australian website:

SPACE Age (200/1), who rocketed into contention for next week's Kalgoorlie Cup with a sensational Boulder Cup victory on Saturday, may get a new rider.

Trainer Neville Parnham said yesterday he would discuss the issue with the horse's owners in the next 48 hours.

"Final riders aren't until Wednesday," the trainer said. "I will have a chat to the owners before then to see what they want to do."

The horse won the 2000 Gosford Cup (2100m) for trainer Neville McBurney and also had wins at Canterbury, Randwick and Rosehill. But his recent lacklustre form in Broome was responsible for his long odds. Murdoch University vets then found he had ulcers, the worst case they had seen.

TRAINER Ross Price is battling to overcome an injury to his stable star Wool Zone, favourite for Saturday's Swan Draught Kalgoorlie Gold Cup (2300m).

Wool Zone was ridden by Kevin Forrester when he finished 13th as $2.50 favourite to Space Age in Saturday's Boulder Cup (1760m). Forrester replaced Paul Harvey, who lost his bid for a stay of proceedings on Friday to keep the ride.

Wool Zone was last out of the gates and became caught in a ruck of horses about the 1200m mark when trying to improve his position. The four-year-old was trapped wide and knuckled down badly at the top of the straight, appearing to lose confidence on the rain-affected track.

Price said the horse had a cut on his near-hind tendon.

"I have kept the swelling down with cold water and ice," the trainer said yesterday.

"The wound is about the middle of the tendon and there is a bit of heat in it.

"He won't do a lot until Wednesday when he'll go back to the track."

Price said Jason Whiting and Glenn Smith were being considered for the ride on Wool Zone in the cup.

Other good chances include - Wool Zone, Priceless Matt & Kiwi Hombre AND of course let's not forget that partypooper - SPACE AGE

I think (5) Mapperholic has this race in its keeping, looks a sure thing!!!!

(1) Irish Pride obvious danger after last start win and likes Kalgoorlie.

(4) Eastern Standard fitter after 2 runs back from spell and likely to improve.

Longshot (7) Jashar Boy, if my memory serves me correct was placed in this race last year at god odds.

Cheers.

I see BettyBoop & TESTAROSSA have picked the same 4 almost in the same order, perhaps an omen?

Anyway for what it is worth I think the main two are Irish Pride & Mapperholic and will chuck in Mr Callahan & Beyond Dispute for a bit of value.

On current form Wool Zone is my top pick from Priceless Matt, Kiwi Hombre & Czariffic.

I would also include Dexian in the multiples as I don't believe he is over rated, however has been racing well below best in recent times. On his best form, I would agree Paddy, would go very close.

No one should be interested but as I have been fairly vocal, my PPM system pick for Kalgoorlie is: No.12 Mr Debernals, and my own personal choice is Wool Zone
