Black Caviar's daughter Oscietra has made an impressive first public appearance, leading all the way to win a jumpout at Flemington today
The two-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel is the first foal from the champion mare Black Caviar
Ridden by Black Caviar's regular jockey Luke Nolen in today's 800m hit-out, Oscietra began quickly to lead the five-horse heat and was never headed in a performance that pleased co-trainer David Hayes

LITTLE Caviar Oscietra has been unable to emulate her famous mum Black Caviar by failing to win first-up down the Flemington straight.
But trainer David Hayes has predicted Oscietra will find winning ways ahead despite finishing third on debut.

David Hayes hinted in an interview after her trials, that she has some ability, but not sure she's anywhere near BC's grade, yet punters sent her out a short priced favourite.
After the race, Mr Hayes didn't look that disappointed, just said maybe she went too hard early and would talk to the jockey.
Based on her trials, one would probably send her out favourite, but the chances of her winning Black type races is small.
As any breeder would know, champions inherit certain genes from their parents and grandparents. The genes combine and become dominant under certain circumstances.
The point is, she'll throw some handy foals, but the chances of any one of them being a champion, are probably 100/1.
Even full brothers and sisters to champions rarely are as good for the same reason. Case in point Octagonal sired so many horses, yet Lonhro was the only one to come close, still not as good.

Crikey, they're greedy trying to extract a foal every year.
My research indicates that when one uses a mare as a breeding machine, they don't have time to recover, they need at least one year off, as one prominent breeder agreed and does with great success. Otherwise the foals don't tend to get the full benefit of the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and proper formation and conformation of highly crucial areas. If a mare doesn't have time to recover and rebuild herself (lets not forget she's lactating the whole time), this can lead to dead, slipped, or inferior foals.

Won Geelong Synthetic Race 3. Went quickly to the lead, got one length on the field at the turn then held them safely down the straight.
Next run on turf in the city. Perhaps in 3 weeks' time at Moonee Valley. Trainer Hayes confident that she'll be a black type winner.
I don't know much about conformation or strides, but I don't think it's a matter of timing or happenstance that she resumed on synthetic.

Nowhere near the old block (Black Caviar) I'm afraid LG.
Equine genetics just don't work that way.
They basically want a clone of Black Caviar, and they aren't going to get it.
Early on, it was reported the Oscietra was worth 5 million, but they weren't selling her. Surely they should have broken her in, trialled her secretly at Euroa and then put her up for sale. She doesn't even resemble BC according to the trainer and is built differently, the trainer was very surprised that she went around odds on at her first start.
However, they will probably get one good horse from Black Caviar, as they are using her as a breeding machine sadly. They won't get a clone as good as her though, they'll get possibly one good horse that will win one or two Group races, and that's the best they can hope for.
Without delving too deeply into equine genetics, it boils down to not how good the Sire or Dam is, you can spend a fortune trying to get a champion, but whether the build, stride, lungs and heart are passed down as dominant genes, and how dominant those genetics are for the combination of sire and dam.

Makes for interesting reading Chrome. Genetics side interests me and I get your point regards pot luck. I have two different coloured eyes and a personality type that is maybe 2 - 5% of the population so you can probably see where I am coming from here.

Yes, LG, if you have brothers and sisters or children and grandchildren, I'll bet none of them have both different colour eyes and the same 2 to 5% personality type together. Not meaning to delve personally, it's just an example for arguments sake.

Initially they should have put her to the sales and earned a cool $5 million, rather than a percentage of $36,000, that would have gone in training fees anyway. She was a small filly, with no Black Type to her name. As a broodmare, they aren't going to do much better. Then there's the $82,500 they paid for the stud fee.
