Hello All,

I need some help organising a trip to Melbourne for the Cup this year. Does anyone know:

- how far Flemington is from Melbourne CBD?
- any good suggestions for places to stay that aren't too expensive (just in case I lose all my money on the track)

Thanks for your help

Shoein,

Someone from Melbourne will probably have some better suggestions but you may like to start with the official website:

http://www.vrc.net.au/mcc/index.asp

It has some info on getting to the racecourse (ie. driving or the correct tram/train to catch) and links to accomodation packages at various motels/hotels.

La Mer: Flemington is not far out from the city - it has its own train station that backs on to the course, right behind the members grandstand - about a ten or twelve minute train ride. There are also trams that pass the entry gates, but this means a ten minute walk or so to the course proper.

The 'not to expensive' places to stay would be in the northern or western suburbs - the city hotels are very expensive - so places like the Werribee Motor Lodge, the Sunbury Motor Inn or the Keilor Motor Inn would only be suitable if you are driving as they are too far out otherwise.

The Essendon Motor Inn is a lot closer but would be more expensive.

Probably the best place would be the Footscray Motor Inn, which is within walking distance of Flemington (20 min walk), but it may already be booked out.

Shoeln,

As an ex Melbourne Taxi owner/driver I'll give you the Drum.

Regardless where you stay [all relative to what you can afford or what you would call inexpensive], make sure you are within walking distance of a tram or train, preferably the later as the Trams get into traffic problems on the day.

Trains leave every few min. to and from Flemington to the City where you can easily connect to anywhere by Tram or Train.

Do not rely on a taxi to get to or from the track!

Traffic will kill the trip for any Cab [if you get lucky and one turns up] and even if you book one 24hrs. before the trip it probably will not turn up because Taxi companies do not own Cabs as they are only a booking/dispatch company. They only issue the "bookings" for the drivers to take or not to take at their discretion.

You have [all] been warned.

Cheers and have a great Day!
