Autumn Tipping Comp 2018

[Sportz]

NATIONAL PUNTING LEAGUE (Autumn 2018)

Here's how the comp works. We will all be tipping against each other for 8 weeks from this Saturday, February 10, through to March 31. Then at the completion of those 8 weeks, the top tipsters will go to a final series ending with the grand final on Saturday, April 21.



Please read the rules carefully.

RULES

1. Of the 8 Saturdays during the preliminary rounds, you must tip on at least 6 of them. You are allowed to miss 2 weeks. No more. People will have to start tipping by February 24 or they miss out.

2. You can post anywhere between 3 and 15 selections each week.

3. You can bet anywhere between $60 and $300 each week. The leading tipsters are judged on % profit, not the total amount of profit. So betting more won't give you a better chance. But you can change the amount you bet from week to week depending on your confidence.

4. On each selection, you can bet any multiple of $5 up to $30, either win only, place only or each way.

5 . You can tip at any Australian or New Zealand gallops meeting covered by UBET on Saturdays. Which is just about everything.


Calculating your $ return:
I will be using Sportsbet TT+ to calculate the return on all races if available. If not available, I will be using UBET dividends.

Yes, but I'm afraid you have to put all your tips in at once, so that would have to be your first race for the day. If you wanted to go from race to race posting just one tip at a time, then I'm sorry, you can't do that.

Consider a rule adjustment

Sportz, just another rule change for consideration for future competitions. Instead of making people tip in 6 of 8 weeks how about just having a penalty for not betting in a week. So if you missed 1 week its -10%, miss two weeks its -20%, and continue the -10% ongoing for each week not tipped.

It would mean those not tipping or tipping less weeks do not gain an advantage over those who have put in at least 3 selections every week.

I am just putting it out there for consideration... BTW thanks again for the hard work you put in.

Odds of hitting two $10 chances are 1%. So its in the realms of doable. With a bit of an edge and skill you are probably closer to 2%-3% chance. So as Sportz says it is not impossible and worth a good shot at.

Its a standard probability calculation. The chance of two events occurring is the probability of the first event x the probability of the second event (which is only correct if you can correctly determine the probability of both events and one event is not related to the other event). For example the chance of raining today is 30% but the chance of you getting wet is 20%. That doesn't mean you have a 6% chance of getting wet if it rains today, its probably much higher.

I don't want to get into the law of large numbers vs the the law of averages (not the right thread) but its an interesting topic. The law of large numbers makes the calculation correct.

Yep, Puntz I think you are right and was why I was betting the place. I was playing the percentages. The chance of a big percentage win is small, but the chance of a loss is also small meaning you never vary far from the breakeven and breakeven can get you into the finals.

I used to not allow any place only betting at all. But when you think about it, what we're trying to do is just make a profit or as close to it as possible. If someone is able to do that just by place betting, should you stop them? We'll see for next time. I may revert to a minimum of at least $5win on every single selection.

Just a minor change to the betting rules used during the preliminary rounds. You can now post anywhere between 5 and 10 tips instead of 3-15 tips. The bet sizes remain the same as we've been using all the way through.

The person listed first in each matchup finished higher on the ladder, so they are given the "home ground advantage" of having 25% more to spend. The person listed first is allowed to bet between $125 and $250 while the person listed second gets to bet between $100 and $200. In each case, betting the maximum amount won't actually give you a better chance. Because I will simply be converting your total winnings back to a score out of 125 or 100 as the case may be.

The tipster in each matchup who posts second is only allowed to include one of the horses tipped by the person who posted first. Just to clarify this... The person who's listed 2nd doesn't have to wait around and post their tips 2nd. They can get in and post their tips first if they want to. But whoever it is that ends up posting 2nd in each matchup, they can only tip one of the horses that the 1st tipster has picked.

In the unlikely event of a tie, the match will be awarded to the tipster listed 2nd.
