Does anyone have any concrete views in E/W betting --- I'm sure you all do!!
I notice Testarossa is suggesting 1W 2Pl in his new system; I sometimes bet 1W 5Pl. I feel sure our collective wisdom can come up with some definitive answer to this question.
Many won't touch the idea at all (and I'm quite aware of that); but what about those who do???

its over rated. better backing two for the win. get a better return. only back each way when its paying $4 or more for the place

Hey Merriguy,
I do e/w bets and find them quite effective because if the horse you bet on doesnt win but comes place well you get your money back, usually with a bit of interest. Howeverif you do a e/w bit and the horse doesnt win or place well you lose out, but thats the risk!
So I guess if you are more confident on the horse coming place instead of a win, it is a good idea to put more on the place then the win.
I think what umrum said is a good point, back for the place if it is paying more than $4,

Personally I am into maximizing my return so for each system/strategy I use I keep track of all the divs for both win and place and then simply examine the return on both. In all cases (so far) I have found that the win return is far better than the place return so I bet Win only. Personally I wouldn't go E/W UNLESS the return on the win and place was basically the same.
For example the long term returns of one of my current approaches gives a Win POT of around 20% but the place POT is only 5%. If I bet win only I get the 20% return but if I split the bet equally E/W then I only get 12.5%

Cant remember his name but one of the most succesfull american punters motto was pick em for a win back em for a place.
His belief was CONSISTANT small returns was better than long runs off outs.
He maintained on the psychological side of things it made him a better punter because he never had any horrendous run off outs.
Cheers
