I cant believe all the negative views on lonhro ,he's not a champion ,gets it easy in his races ,aint beat nothing much, blah, blah ,blah if he does nothing else he has done enough for me 'go lonhro you good thing' and all the best in the cox plate you deserve it .in my humble opinion the only thing thing that will stop him in this race is the track itself but he's had a look at it and may now be wiser for it 'thats my two bobs worth on this subject'

Hey Tragic,

How bizarre, we share the same thoughts. I definately think he is a champ in his own right, all one has to do is look at his win record. Now if one thinks that doesnt deserve the name champ, well its certainly got me thinking???

he sure is a brilliant horse. he's very close to a champion. I think it's unfortunate for him that the races australia judges it's champions on aren't his cup of tea. The cox plate and the caufield cup are arguably the two best races in australia. Last year he was thrashed by northerly in the cox plate and the rest of the field for that matter. I doubt very much that he would run 2400 metres and his handicap in the caufield cup would be too great. So too be a champion he must win some big group one's with some decent sized fields and some sort of speed on. The doncaster is another huge race but again he was beaten. Now as good as lonhro is, he cannot sustain a run for more than 400 - 500 metres. Ifyou look at australia's last three champions, Northerly, sunline and might and power; they could all sustain huge runs. Also they won cox plates, caufield cups and a melbourne cup between them. At the moment even lonhro fans must admit he hasnt beaten much. His win in the yalumba was top class as was his caufield guineas win, but races such as the chipping norton, george main, george ryder are barely group one races. These were all soft kills with no pace on early they were sit and sprint affairs and no one can beat him in that sort of race. But in defense of lonhro all you can do is win and he sure does that. His winning strike rate is brilliant. I believe he would be better suited in sprints and middle distance races such as the oakleigh plate up to the toorak and doncasters. I hope lonhro can prove his champion status. he probably is a champion but he does need to win at the highest of high levels. He needs a big group one win.

anyway to answer your question why knock lonhro? Tall poppy syndrome is probably part of it. Northerly was knocked and he won 2 cox plates, 2 australian cups and a caufield cup so lonhro must surely be knocked as he hasnt won any of those races. Also some people sincerely think he isnt a champion. Some people think he is a great galloper with a remarkable sprint but believe he has been found out at the elite level.

I think too become a champion he has to win a real dinkum group one.

anyway he's a great great great horse who is unbeatable over 1600. i think the cox plate will give many an answer.

But apart from that what a great period of racing we have. Northerly, lonhro and sunline. You wont get too many better horses than those three racing against each other. Then throw in class gallopers shogun lodge, defier, sky heights, universal prince, viscount, ethereal etc pretty good.

just wondering. would lonhro's strike rate be as good if viscount had of stayed fit and well. I believe he would have tested lonhro at all distances.

cheers

I gotta say that I like Lohnro. If you have backed him in all his starts ... he owes you nothing. The only thing i don't like is that he seems to run in small WFA fields.. I don't think anyone will beat him in thoe sort of fields at the moment.. The odd horse may run him close.. but he is just about unbeatable at WFA in the small fields.. Put a few horses around him and then I think you have a totally different proposistion. I think in larger fields where he doesnt get the race his own way he is very vulnerable. The jockeys that race against him have to use their brains a bit.. Whilst ever Lohnro is allowed to sit n sprint in small fields he will win 9 out 10 of em.. maybe all 10. Before I call him a champion I want to see him in a large field of quality horses, But as I said at the start of this ramble... I do like Lohnro and I don't think he deserves the bagging he gets.

another reason why people criticise lonhro is because of wayne hawkes' disgraceful comments about Northerly.

good point lonhro 19. lonhro is one of my favourites but waynes comments made me want him to get beaten so that wayne was wrong . so perhaps wayne shot himself in the foot.

G,day umrum,

In my opinion I have witnessed the greatest mare to have ever run in our time-"SUNLINE"
No packdrill, this mare is definitely "THE GREATEST" mare(NB. mare)...not the greatest horse.
She ran against and regularly beat the best opposed to her.....what a champion mare!!!

Cheers.

So there Umrum. Don't you ever mention the words Sunline and Lonrho in the same breath ever again !

And to the rest of you soppy lot who have won a few bucks [at icecream money odds] on this great sprinter [we have lots of greats],lets not weaken the word "champion". Think of the true champions turning in their grave at the thought.

Cheers.

Is LONHRO a CHAMPION
I have just looked up Champion in the Dictionary :
A Person,Animal or thing that wins first place in a game or contest.
Does this mean all winners are "CHAMPIONS"

G'day/Evening Forumsters,
on some info I received today I could probably
concur with William.
Covering the 2000/2001 season:
Horses that earnt:0$ 9646
:$1-$9999 15429
:$10000-$99000 6149
:$100000-$499000 330
:$500000+ 38
All depends on how you class a CHAMPION.
I'd have to agree with Umrum on the Viscount score,he was a horse with real class.

If people wish to call Lonhro a champion perhaps use a sub-group of champion ie. champion sprinter or a WFA champ because he hasn't won over all distances, he hasn't won a major Group 1 handicap(ability to carry weight) and he hasn't smashed track records! all these I believe constitute a true champion of which Lonhro isn't...

Cheers

To those who don't rate Lonhro's wins in smallish WFA fields, have a look at the sizes of the fields that Phar Lap and Tulloch mostly beat at WFA. 3-6 runners were common place. Some of the great WFA races are small, quality fields.

21/28 is almost incomparable in Aus racing history. Give credit where it is due.
