I know its still early , but yesterday i came across a market for how many gold medals he will win:[ he has to swim in at least 3 events for bets to stand]

3 - $2.30
4 - $3.00
2 - $4.20
5 - $12.00
1 - $15.00
0 - $17.00
6+ - $34.00

I suppose the market is pretty spot on, but you could have a go at one now and a saver when they start , what does anyone think.

cheers

Barring illness, injury or falling into the pool too soon , he should win the 400 and the 4 x 200. The other races really depend on what other swimmers do. Thorpe would be favourite in the 200, but if Phelps swims that event, he's so damn good, he must stand some chance. Van Den Hoogenband is also a hope if Thorpe is off his game. The 100 is really down to Van Den Hoogenband. If he's at his top, he'll probably win it, but Thorpe is definitely training more as a sprinter now, so he does have a chance of an upset. As for the other two relays, the Americans would be favourites to win both, but if Thorpe can get a lot of help from teammates like Callus, Piper, Welsh etc, they could certainly upset the yanks.

I'd say that the bookies have it about right. At this stage, he would be favoured to probably win 3, but I'm certainly hoping for 6!

The bookies dont rate M. Phelps that high, $1.30 to win less than 7 gold

Well, I wouldn't really like to bet against him doing it. Personally though, it's more likely he'll win 5 or 6. Still a DAMN fine achievement. He's qualified for NINE events. At this stage, he hasn't decided if he's going to swim the lot. Anyway, I'll go through them for you:

Almost certain wins:
200 I.M
400 I.M
200 Butterfly
4x100 Medley Relay
4x100 Relay

Possible wins:
100 Butterfly (teammate Crocker will be favourite)
200 Backstroke (teammate Piersol is likely to win)
200 Freestyle (has to beat Thorpe, Hackett and Van Den Hoogenband)
4x200 Relay (the Australians will be the favourites)

I wouldn't think he could win the 200 freestyle against thorpe and hackett, but she should beat van 100m hoogenband home

Well, I'm not actually sure if it's the 8th Hole or not, but I know that there's a 110 yard par 3 called the postage stamp and it's one of the most famous holes in Golf.

Phelps must be swimming in less events than he said he was going to, because he has firmed $1.30 to $1.10 to win less than 7 gold

He's going in 8. He dropped the 200 backstroke, but his chances are still pretty much the same because he never really had much chance of beating Piersol.

The shortening of the odds probably comes from people doing as I have done and working out that he would be favoured to win 5 or 6. As I said before, he's so damn good I certainly wouldn't write him off getting 7. If less than 7 golds is $1.10, what is 7 or more? I suppose about $6 or $7? It could be worth a gamble. You're basically betting on him winning all the races he's favoured to win and also getting 2 upsets from the 3 other races and they are not really HUGE upsets.
