From the Sydney Morning Herald:

Hidden finger, the film

Rugby League bad boy John Hopoate and his infamous onfield fingering scandal have been immortalised in a Hollywood film starring Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick.

The film, The Last Shot, has nothing to do with rugby league and its American writer-director Jeff Nathanson is not a fan of the sport and knows little about it. Nathanson, however, thought a brief, out-of-the-blue mention about Hopoate's notorious 2001 finger probing incident in the offbeat, witty comedy would fit well in a scene, despite it having nothing to do with the context of the film.

In the scene Tony Shaloub, who plays an eccentric mobster, is watching a game on TV and begins ranting about how a player was banned for sticking his fingers in other players' rear ends. "You'll notice Tony Shaloub is always watching some obscure sporting event, some weird thing like bowling, so it was something to do," Nathanson said.

Nathanson was holidaying in Europe in 2001 when he first read about Hopoate's notorious 12-week suspension for putting his fingers up the backsides of three North Queensland players during a game. "I was travelling in Europe and I was reading the newspaper and reading about the incident and just kept it in the back of my mind," Nathanson said.

The Last Shot, which also stars Calista Flockhart, Ray Liotta and Australian actress Toni Collette, is scheduled to open in Australian cinemas in October.

This is the most interesting round for years, would be advisable to bet day by day, panthers should win, looking to hold a top 4 spot with A.ROBERTS,R.GIRDLER,F. PRITCHARD back, and the broncos already got 3rd wrapped up and rumours that a few players might be rested, still no LOCKYER ,FRAWLEY and maybe no WEBKE, but BERRIGAN is back.

Both the knight and tigers WILL be trying in this game, for the ALLAN MACMAHON shield[BALMAIN great, KNIGHTS 1st coach]Tigers wanting 8th spot and knights last home game sending off B.KENNEDY, R.O'DAVIS,M PARSONS and T.TAHU.

If the tigers win the previous game i wonder if the sharks will try ?,the cowboys get back K.CAMPION and maybe M.SING and G.MORRISON

Both souths and raiders will be trying, the raiders, if w/tigers lose, can get 8th spot, while souths are trying to avoid the wooden spoon The raiders get back A.MOGG,R.WIKI and T.SMITH while souths lose L.HOOKEY.

Even if souths win or lose the warriors will be out to smash the bulldogs [ like they did against the roosters],trying to avoid the wooden spoon,Warriors get back C.TOOPI,B.WEBB,R.VILLISANTI and the bulldogs get back C.HUGHES and S.BILL WILLIAMS.

The storm can finish 4th if the knights win by 50pts,highley unlikely, will probably finish 5th or 6th, might rest some players while manly only playing for pride.

The roosters can rest a few play also if the bulldogs get beaten aerlier in the day, winning the minor premiership ricky stuart could change the line up. Roosters get back C.FITZGIBBONS,while the eels get back J.LANGI and lose C.STAPLETON.

Put your mind at ease,Sportznut. It's not the same. But this time next year it will be the same.Unless the NRL change it again, then it won't be the same.

I think i'll bet game by game,no multis, or scoring options might be a better gamble.Anyone with FOXTEL can watch the cowboys/sharks on foxsport 1 and the raiders/souths game on the main event channel at the same time.

Jason Moodie has been ruled out of the w/tigers side tonight against the knights, being one of their best players he will be a big loss and the knights should win now, the tigers were ordinary last week and the knights still with a few players still out have trained strongly this week and are a lot healthier than in previous weeks and are pumped up for a big game.

Scrap all that, this is a no bet game now as it was announced just now on radio that M.Ennis is out and Danny Buderus is in hospital with an infected foot, but is still expected to play tonight !

B.Sherwin is out of the bulldogs side against the warriors and J.Thurston goes to half,GO the warriors and smash those dogs and cock a doodle doo, we'll be Minor Premiers.

Billy Slater and Matt Orford are out of the storms team against manly tomorrow, so i wouldnt have a cent on them.

Had Knights -2.5, that one could still go either way.

Also Cowboys -2.5

MR J, do you watch the games live, the knights seem to have the tigers covered from the start, but the cowboys was a 50/50 till late in the game, i was flicking between the cowboys/raiders game and every time i did the raiders scored,62-22 thats touch footy.

Mr J
4th September 2004, 10:24 PM
Yeh I usually watch a bit, flick between the games. Both of those games (knights & cowboys) were pretty close up until the end.

Anyway just finished my analysis and bets for tonight.

Thinking I might give NRL a miss tomorrow. My system says Easts -14.18, so no bet there. Also says Warriors +12.5 and Manly +4.5 are good. Thing is neither of those teams now have anything to play for, where as their opposition do. Don't know how much motivation will affect things here so no point placing blind bets.

I disagree a little saying they have nothing to play for, the warriors would love to avoid the spoon by ending with a win, last week against the roosters they bashed each other silly and i expect the same again and i think the +12.5 is a good bet, bulldogs halfback and main kicker B.Sherwin is out. As for the manly game, i think its the opposite as the storm have nothing to play for, they cant finish any higher or lower and have rested half back and playmaker M.Orford and B.Slater, so i think manly might get up also, i'll be watching all games tomorrow and probably wont bet as i had a good day today.

Mr J
5th September 2004, 10:53 AM
Good points. Decided to make the bets, anything but going 0-3 and I won't mind.

I do have the feeling Manly will play up again. They've been in good form and I'm thinking they will play this purely for pride. Storm as you said, have nothing to gain. They'll take this easy and rest the walking wounded. Storm also aren't the greatest away side.

Warriors, well they came hard vs Easts last week, and you'd think they'd come out and try to do the same again. Bulldogs are fighting for position #1, so they will be motivated. I think if the warriors get 2 scores or more behind they might give it up.

If bulldogs lose, easts will probally take today pretty easy so Eels might be worth looking at.

Definately more comfortable with Manly than the Warriors.

Done well off manly though, 3-1. I'm 6-4 on the warriors.

For betting it's a bit of a shame manly did so well last week, or they might have had a larger start (+8.5 would've been nice).

Mr J
5th September 2004, 11:55 AM
This is why I wanted to stay out of it. Warriors defence is pathetic. We'll see from the 2nd half if they've got any heart.

Sitting here watching the game and the warriors are back to their bad old ways, there HOPELESS and its not right that their not getting the wooden spoon, they have one more loss than the bunnies, who have 2 draws but a bad F/A

Mr J
5th September 2004, 06:46 PM
Well my thoughts at least were right. Warriors got a bit behind and gave up. Didn't watch the Manly game, but we were pretty spot on there.

Power won as well so I'm pretty happy with todays results.
