There is plenty of logic behind your thinking.
Jockeys pay their Managers to get them good rides. It's clearly in both of their best interests to get results.
I'm sure there are plenty of forumites who would like to know how you are going including me.Good luck with it...

I wonder how you would go if you had a change from a non- winning jockey to a top rider and the horse had ran 2nd or 3rd last start.?
The theory being that the trainer expects a win.
Cheers.

I and a lot of other people took a chance on just the opposite case at Bunbury last week. After having a good jockey the previous 3 rides (including a last start win) Spirited Gem started favorite with an apprentice on it's back in race 7. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth when he fell off at the 900m mark. Based on that performance you may have a good point there darky.

I was idly number crunching jockey strike rates. This sent a chill through me because several similar examples popped up.
I looked in racenet and saw what appeared to be a definite bias towards certain tracks by particular jockeys.Ahhh I thought,it's the old horses for courses theory.
Here is an example....
P.Graham (who I see ride a lot around the local traps)
Muswellbrook....101 rides for 5 winners and a strike rate of 5%
Port Macquarie..146 rides for 25 winners and a strike rate of 17.1%
Sticks out like the proverbial dog's balls doesnt it ???
Except......
At Muswellbrook his total placings (including wins) are 47.This gives him an overall strike rate of 46.5%
At Port Macquarie his total placings (including wins) are 73.This gives him an overall strike rate of 50%
Over all of the tracks that he attends his total strike rate is 48.4%
Is he unlucky at Muswellbrook ?? Lucky at Port Macquarie??? Or is he simply a very consistent rider???
It's a worry this racing game.....Anyway,, my Mrs is just fixing dinner for tonight.Spiced chicken breasts.I can bet on them.

Quote...Munce was forced to ride Wicked Wizard with his weight on the right side of the horse and his left leg was dangling in the breeze.
Perhaps this will be the answer ?????

KENNY VICTOR.
Being an old cynic from way back I might bet Spirited Gem next start.
The jockey fell off eh.
Might be looking for a price.
Cheers.

Peter Graham starts 2005 with a bang
Mid north coast jockey Peter Graham has certainly kicked of the New Year on the right foot booting home nine winners already this year.
Graham started the year at the Port Macquarie non-TAB meeting with a winning double aboard the Tas Moreton-trained Blue Cougar and the Bob Graham-trained Prince Of Opera.
The following day he ventured to Inverell for their Cup meeting. Not only did he win the Inverell Cup but also he racked up four winners for the day. The first aboard the Mark Mason-trained Nine Bells and then followed it up with wins aboard the Mark Gwynne-trained Zelotti, Simply Viv for Dean Smith and Tree Lopper for Leon Fox in the Inverell Cup (1400m).
Then yesterday at Port Macquarie he continued his great form riding a treble. Two of his winners were for trainer Debbie Prosser in Seekadane and Bingara. He capped the day winning aboard the Peter Cooper trained Glenrock Ace.
Good call Syllabus!

I know racenet breaks down a jockeys rides at each track but in the past I have come across a site that breaks them down according to price, distance, going and so on. Does anyone know of this site????

I'm 99% sure it was 'Racing And Sports' which used to have a magnificent database where you could create your own jockey 'systems'. You just put in certain criteria and it would tell you exactly how that jockey would have fared under those particular circumstances. For example, you could find out how well horses ridden by Damien Oliver fared in 1600m races at Caulfield and Flemington when starting from Barrier 1 (VERY well by the way). Unfortunately, that database has gone now, but they still have a small section where you can see which jockeys do best over certain distances and on wet tracks etc. It is nowhere near as good.

Thanks Sportz, it was racing and sports, and yes what they have now is ordinary to what they use to have.

Yeah, Racenet is much better now, but still nowhere near as good as the Racing And Sports jockey stats used to be. You could play around with it for many hours, spitting out results to all sorts of different race scenarios. It was brilliant.

Ron,
As an example, I've just dug out some stats that I worked out from that site from way back in early 2000. It was based on the previous 18 months of racing. At the time, the three best jockeys to follow were Damien Oliver and the Cassidy brothers (Beadman wasn't riding then), so I did some research on them. In the case of the Cassidys, they are not nearly as successful these days, so these stats probably aren't worth a lot now, but these few examples just show how good that jockey stats database was. And remember these systems contain absolutely no rules at all about the form or odds of the horses they were riding.
J.CASSIDY
Metro trks / 1400-1600m / Slow or Heavy / Barriers 1-5 / 52.5-56.5kgs
6 wins from 16 rides and a profit of 240%
D.OLIVER, J.CASSIDY & L.CASSIDY
Caulfield, Flemington & Randwick / 1600m / Barriers 1-5 / 52.5-56.5kgs
17 wins from 42 bets and a profit of 125%
D.OLIVER, J.CASSIDY & L.CASSIDY
Any tracks / 1600m / Barrier 1 / 52.5-56.5kgs
13 wins from 30 bets and a profit of 166%
D.OLIVER, J.CASSIDY & L.CASSIDY
Caulfield, Flemington & Randwick / 1600m / Barrier 1 / 52.5-56.5kgs
10 wins from 15 bets and a profit of 320%
D.OLIVER & J.CASSIDY
Caulfield / 1600m / 52.5-56.5kgs
12 wins from 30 bets and a profit of 150%

Ron,
I've found a site which has all the free jockey stats you might want. You can't create systems like the old Racing And Sports site, but it's still pretty damn good. If you want to, you can leave your email address and I'll send you the details.

Thanks Sportz
Some interesting selections so far in the ratings comp.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused. I'd worked out my ratings in R4 based on Jason Benbow getting 3 kgs off My Gibreel and I had him rated just ahead of another horse in 5th spot. But I just heard Shane Templeton say on radio that Jason only gets 2 kgs claim now, so I don't know what to do.

Thanks for the links to that site Sportz, I especially like the fact you can see how they have fared for different odds ranges. Even their performance from certain barrier posistions can point you away from some losers.

Peter Graham continues to produce the goods.A flat each/way bet on all of his mounts at Taree yesterday produced a ROI of 28%.This guy is Mr.Consistency,he tries hard and he tries "all" of the time.
It's not the most scientific method of punting. But for a relaxed hassle free day at the races Peter Graham will always put you in with a chance.Dont ever leave this jockey out of multiples.
If there is one thing about country racing down here, the word "relaxed" is the key.The people are so friendly, the food is usually good and the whole atmosphere just keeps bringing you back.
Peter Graham,a lanky hoop with talent to spare.Dont forget him.
