View Full Version : JANUARY TIPPING COMPETITION (Jan 1)
Sportz
31st December 2004, 08:34 AM
There are some new rules for the January comp.
COMPETITION RULES:
$150 to bet with each week. $100 in win/each way bets, a $30 trifecta and a $20 all-up bet. Of course, all tips to be posted prior to the jump time of your first race. In the case of scratchings, it would be desirable if you could make changes, especially for the trifecta part of the comp. If that's not possible however, your scratched horses will simply be taken out and that money refunded.
WIN / EACH-WAY BETTING: ($100)
No restriction at all on the number of selections per race or the amount bet on any race, as long as your bets add up to $100. However, you can only bet the following amounts:
$5 win, $10 win, $20 win, $30 win, $40 win, $50 win
$5 e-w, $10 e-w, $15 e-w, $20 e-w, $25 e-w
TRIFECTA BETTING: ($30)
Everyone to pick out one trifecta each week. It can be on any race. It will be a 1/2 unit trifecta and there are 4 options you can choose:
Option 1: A 5 horse 'box' trifecta (If any 3 of your 5 horses finish in the placings in any order, you win)
Option 2: A 3/6/6 trifecta (3 horses to win, and those 3 plus another 3 for the 2nd and 3rd placings)
Option 3: A 2/7/7 trifecta (2 horses to win, and those 2 plus another 5 for the 2nd and 3rd placings)
Option 4: A Roving Banker with 5 others (Your 'banker' MUST finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and any 2 of the other 5 to fill the other placings)
Please set out very clearly which option you want to use and which horses you want for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
ALL-UP BETTING: ($20)
Everyone to pick out a $20 all-up bet at one of the venues each week.
You can have 2, 3 or 4 races and you are allowed to pick each selection for a win OR for a place.
Of course, normal place betting rules apply. If your horse runs 3rd in a field of 7 and there's no 3rd div, then that's counted as a loss. Also, please specify if you want any or all of your selections for a place, because if not, I'll just assume you're picking them to win.
Any questions, just ask.
Good luck.

thanks Chuck, i have been doing ok since using my tips in the competition the past four weeks.
i am still learning about things, i have a little system that i'm using. the only ones that i did bet on today were mr5, sr5, br4 & ar7, the rest are blow ins. I do bet two horses per race, and the 2nd choice seems to be outdoing the 1st choice. not keen on these all ups though, but its all about learning

Yeah Feather, I've noticed you have a good strike rate of getting the winner with your two tips per race.
Personally, I'm absolutely hopeless at these Tipping comps. Unlike you, I always have so many different races I think about including and I get all confused and never know which ones to finally pick.
And the races I do end up choosing are always the wrong ones.

sportz, I have never looked at a boxed 5 before. how do you work out if a trifecta or quinella is worth putting on? Yesterday i bet on 7 races, four were on the forum and three at ascot. I would of won the tri 5 times paying 163.20, 295.80, 110.70, 23.60 & 63.80. is the loss of one worth it,because i had the others? I would of had the quin in all 7 races (not betting) and only four were over the $10 cost, but because I had pr9, this would of covered the losses . for the past two months on this system, i had been looking at only 4 horses per race, and it was not worth looking into it further.
Is there such a thing as a strike rate for two horses in a race? as i have been recording them separatly. thanks

It's hard to tell whether a race is going to be value or not. I just looked up the results of your races and in all three trifectas that paid quite well, the favourite missed a place. That's when you get the bigger dividends. The two trifectas that didn't pay a lot, the favourite won. So, I guess the secret is to see if there's a short priced favourite and work out whether you think it will win or not. As for 5 horses versus 4, when you only have 4 horses in a trifecta and something goes wrong with one of them, you're relying on all 3 of your remaining runners filling the placings. In a 5 horse box, you have that extra chance. Most of the experts will actually say that it's stupid to have a box trifecta and it would be much better to use the 3/6/6 or 2/7/7 ideas. I just feel safer boxing them or using the roving banker idea. I prefer to have more than just 2 or 3 horses running for 1st. 2 guys in the tipping comp unsuccessfully went for a 2/7/7 trifecta in R6 in Sydney, and there's a good chance they would have got it with a 5 horse box or roving banker.
Is there such a thing as a strike rate for two horses in a race? as i have been recording them separatly. thanks
Of course there is. It doesn't matter if you have two horses in a race. If you back 2 horses in say 10 races and your top selection wins 4 of them and your 2nd pick wins 2, then you've had the winner in 6 of the 10 races (60%) The only thing that changes is the profit. If you back them at level stakes and you get a $3.00 winner, instead of getting 200% profit on that race, you've only made 50% profit. The thing I've noticed with your tips for the comp is that you have the same amount on both and if a short priced runner wins, you don't make much profit on the race. Perhaps you could think about having more on the shorter one, say $10 compared to $5. Don't know why I should tell you what to do though. You're doing better in the tipping comp than me.
Duritz
2nd January 2005, 09:13 PM
OK I've just noticed this tipping comp thread, is it still open or did you have to put in an entry for Saturday? I could always put one in for tomorrow's midweek grade with Saturday prizemoney meeting at MV if it is still open? If not, well, too bad for me.

Hi Duritz,
It's actually restricted to Saturdays and some Public Holidays, but yes, you can still join in next Saturday. You won't be starting that far behind most of us. Thanks to Raw Instinct's tips, we've all got a bit of catching up to do but it's possible to do that with a good trifecta or all-up.

Sorry. Got a bit confused with all the racing and public holidays at this time of year and forgot about today being a holiday of course. You're comment about 'Midweek' racing threw me a bit too. Anyway, today's racing isn't part of the tipping comp.
