View Full Version : Sports Betting - Tip of the Day
Betsy
30th January 2005, 10:24 AM
I remember a tip of the day thread in the horseracing forum being rather successful and thought why not try it but with sports betting...
Now, this is a thread where we put our best bet for the day, one which we think has a mixture of good value and a strong chance of getting up. We'll track how the thread goes as a whole at tipping winners, lets hope its a success!
My tip for today is in Game 8 in the VB series (AUS vs. PAK)
Im not too keen on the $1.26 on offer for Australia as of yet but with the live match betting we may get value
- My thoughts are that you should wait for Australia to get into early trouble (if it doesnt happen don't bet) then take an increased price such as ~$1.60 as the Aussies have huge depth in their batting lineup and the tail is very strong

I haven't been punting much but when I heard Lara was out I can't believe I got the Paki's at $1.80 H2H ON tab sportsbet(vic)

At 8:11pm Sportstab had the Paki's at a hell of a price $2.70
I was watching the odds last nite and the flucs were absolutely unbelievable as you coud have got the Pakis at $3.50 at one stage when Chanderpaul and Sarwan were batting so well and I don't know what price the Windies ever got to but im sure there were stages they would have payed $4-5.
I guess when it's a great pitch like that both teams looked like they would win easily at different stages. Shows how volatile one day cricket can be and what a great betting medium it is.

Mug Punta, sorry i didn't check this post till after the race, her form had a second at Geelong on the heavy at her second start, but beaten 4 lengths, she's much improved since then and i still thought she was a pretty safe bet. I think now i can safely say after 2 heart attacks, she probably doesn't like it this wet, her class still got her home and it was a good win with the weight advantage Pugnacious had but i suspect if it was dry she would have romped in. Very short price, ended up getting $1.90 (minus deduction of course) and tote even shorter but hey, we cant go broke making a profit.
Cheers ED.

Doomben rc 7 No. 9 Noble Gent has won his last 4 impressively all at 1000 m, tommorow he steps up to the 1010 but i think he might handle it. He easily accounted for a weaker lot last start and has been running very good times. He should get across and lead from (2) with Picardi Run (who gets back a bit) drawn inside him or he may take a sit behind Masindor. He's rated $4.50 in Winning Post and i would be v. happy with that.
Jack Daniels
4th February 2005, 05:50 PM
Paki's are still showing $4.10 on sportstab after the completion of Australia's lacklustre performance with the bat. Australia only scored 237. I think the Paki's are a good chance to win this match requiring only 4.76 per over to win.
Well that didn't last long. Paki's now $2.45 - Aust $1.50

Yeah, I think he should be able to run another ten metres!!! :D
Seriously though, he's been running brilliantly at Eagle Farm. Just has to reproduce that at Doomben.
Mr ed
4th February 2005, 11:01 PM
He'll probably lead all the way and get knocked off with 5m to go now, haha. Yeh he has been very impressive, there are some good quality gallopers in the race, but you'd have to say he has the wood on Helter Skelter, despite the weight difference (4kg) after sitting outside it last start and winning easily. Helter Skelter was a good thing beaten by Gullcatcher the start before that. Picardi Run and Algorythym look the only dangers but one is first up from a long spell and the other has to give 3.5kg to Noble Gent and also drops back in distance, which probably doesn't suit. As for him handling Doomben i hope that helps his odds increase, but fast horses run fast anywhere, and his form has improved out of site since his last trip to Doomben.

Chaanel 9 are making me sick. Well, sicker than usual. Their Cricket coverage lately seems to be one long advertisement for other Channel 9 shows. Poor old Richie Benaud was trying to talk about how wonderful Starstruck was this afternoon when he was rudely interrupted by a wicket falling. And when they're not doing ads for Channel 9 shows, they're doing ads for all that hugely overpriced 'memorabilia'. And of course, when they do concentrate on the Cricket, it's replay after replay after replay........

Yeah well advertising makes the world go round these days ...Quite frankly I find offensive and an insult to what intellegence Ive retained....the way they present things as you say in the middle of something entertaining and when the commercials come on the bloody volume goes up 10 or 20 percent ......Maybe Im just getting old and cranky but I really get cheesed at this dollar driven world we live in and the way we have things thrust at us in the name of THE BUCK..............tomorrow morning is a perfect example of crass in your face commercialization ...THE SUPERBOWL as you might have guessed by my vitriol that i was a teen in the late 60s and 70s and Ive retained some of those values ....but I can quite happily live with that stamp

Noble Gent ran like a cut cat, prick of a thing, Sorry guys. Yeh Floydy, knowledge i think the key to successful gambling is sticking to the thing you know best for you guys it's soccer, i love the horses (maybe i should re-evaluate however). That's why this thread could be successful, if everyone sticks to what they know best, and pool this knowledge, all could benefit. I think the only problem here can be people tipping just for the sake of giving a tip, it doesn't matter if we only give one tip a month as long as its an informed, value-bet we are contributing.

My best bet tonight is J Johansson to beat Ferrero at $1.30
He's been playing faultless tennis and has only lost 1 match this season (if you don't count his retirement against Mirnyi at Sydney) and that 1 match was against Agassi, who he took a set off and took two of the three losing sets to tiebreaks. His big hitting should be too much for a out of form Ferrero and at 1.30 i think the value is there.

expanding on what mr ed said, i think he's right on the money with certain ppl sticking to their favoured sports, as it is very hard to keep up to date and give tips for multiple sports at one time - i myself will be covering tennis, so ill try and nab a few decent wins - as a whole this thread should do well if we stick to our preffered area of expertice and dont post bets willy nilly...

I hate to be unpatriotic but I think the South Africans are a great price to beat the Socceroos tonight.
We are without most of our attacking options while SA will be near full strength. The $2.10+ is too good to refuse.
Also one for the tennis fans - Clement to beat Stepanek.
Stepanek is coming off a long week in Milan and will be playing a fresh Clement in front of his home fans and I think the $2 about the Frenchman is pretty good value.

Gday guys, new member here and avid follower of most sports, with a keen punting eye on the gallops, NRL,NBL and AFL with the cricketgetting a look
in on the odd occasion. Interesting to read all of your thoughts and look forward to good conversation with u all.
Try to stick to the gallops wednesdays and satrurdays with a total combined
6-7 bets. Im pretty switched on about the NRL and that is where my awesome
POI skyrockets at that time of year. My recent strategies have been encouraging in the NBL, and the AFL last year was a success as well.
Back to the GIGI's, love an odds on pop and keen to take any advice or tips on board. Also an avid big stakes place better where i have found to be more profitable with less bets, and higher stakes.

I know your an avid fan of the QLD GiGi's and was wondering what your thoughts were on the C5 over 1800 at G Coast on saturday. What got me interested in the race was Miss La Tar's barnstorming run to win a couple of weeks ago, but was it that good?, the time from the C3 wasn't that good and i think the step up to a C5 may test her. I think she will be ruling favourite in the race and that may leave some value for my selection, Super Imprint has been racing in much better class (narrowly defeated in a C6 last start) over 1820, in a time much better then Miss La Tar's race, he hit the line very hard that day and a repeat of that performance would win i think. He has raced over the 1800 at the G coast before and finished 3l behind the winner who also clocked a time much faster then Miss La Tar. He rises in weight here but drops dramatically in class, whereas Miss rises in weight (no claim this weekend) and class. I don't rate anything else in the race near these two. Your thoughts?

ED- I believe u r spot on with your assesment as i am an avid follower of the QLD giddy-ups. Miss La Tars win was ok , time not flash, and the rise in class for me will be the telling factor. I thought that the better gate and N.Day on board will make Super Imprint VERY hard to beat. Early market has him at 3.5, and maybe around 1.60 for the drum. I think he is place bet of the day in any state.
Definatly the rise in weight might just tell with Miss La Tar and D J Browne is a concern.
REMEMBER- Think first before saying nothing.

She is paying $1.45 on SportsTab and I think that is pretty good value.

Hi Mr ed
i find it hard to rate the race all together,,,there seems to be a lack of speed and even a comfortable leader,,,its hard to do a speed map.....Miss la tar's win the other day was good because she copped a bit of interference as well and looked well out of it......it seems alot of these horses including your Super Imprint like to run on ..the class drop suits though..if it rains which it has tonight and the track is dead or slow i'd be backing King Latarmiss..
other than that i think Super Imprint is a good show..but if they walk up front i'm not sure he can sprint with Miss La Tar....
sorry mate ...just to hard a race for me.
I like the other Latarmiss...La Tar in the 7th..they trotted up front in his last race and he came home from last on the turn,,,there's speed in the race and the distance suits...
also Strategic Plan looks good as well ..but i'm worried about radar O'reilly who has bit of ability...
good luck

Cheers Mav, The possibility of the wet track really worries me and will probably turn out a no bet race for me, just thought there might be some value. Might just go the whole weekends capital and put it on the Regal Roller - Dance Hero all up, Dance Hero just wins at the weights and he is brilliant. Regal Roller also looks close to a good thing. Nothing challenges him at all, from my form analysis, he will boot away on the turn and win this easily if right, and stable thinks he's better then ever. $5 for the all up is great value. The rain here in Melbourne will only enhance his chances.

After a loss on the cricket the other night I was a little reluctant to post a tip for you lot but after a couple of good bets on the tennis and soccer friendlies I thought I'd post my thoughts for a small multi You might like to try.
Roddick $1.14 Vs Enqvist
Agassi $1.13 Vs Melzer
S.Williams $1.08 Vs Safina
Acasuso $1.55 Vs Almagro
Valencia $1.70 Vs Deportivo
A Madrid $1.57 Vs Levante
Chelsea +0.5 $1.14 Vs Everton
Arsenal $1.13 Vs Crystal Palace

Geez that's gutsy Betsy. Both guys have big serves and there will more than likely be at least one tie break.
I'm saving my money for Acasuso. He is in top form at the moment and playing in front of his home fans will make him very hard to beat. I got him at $1.40, but I think the bookies have reeled him in a little bit since then.

J Johansson is struggling losing the first 7-6 - worrying signs however because he's not firing on all cylinders - his first serve % was somewhere around 30% in the middle of the set !!!!! If current form keeps up looks liek Feli is through
Ah well the money ive already made on jj far outweighs the money ill lose tonight :)
Betsy
13th February 2005, 10:26 AM
Johansson won it in three after losing the first in a breaker, probably not his best night of tennis - but even when he's playing below par he is still a big danger, definately believe he will beat a tired ljubicic tonight if he can get his returns going
Betsy

Bad luck with acasuso Spark, always gonna be little in it - Puerta coming back to his 2000 form and riding high from a win over Moya and acasuso who is always at home on clay... Who will you be taking in the final (Gaudio v Puerta)..? Or steering clear of it?
sparkus8
13th February 2005, 11:34 AM
You'd think it would be Gaudio, but who knows after all the upsets this week over there.
Still can't believe Acasuso lost, he had chances in both sets but didn't play the big points very well at all.
Congrats with Johansson, I thought he was a goner after the first set.

18th February 2005, 07:06 PM
Tough round of matches in Rotterdam tonight.
Federer should beat Davydenko, but his price is way too short to justify a bet.
I like Ancic ($2.30) to cause an upset over Henman. If he plays anything like he did when they met at Wimbledon last year Henman wont have a chance.
Johansson ($1.88) also has to be a good chance of beating Stepanek after he had a convincing win over his countryman JJ last night. If he returns well he will have too much for the Czech.
Ljubicic has been playing quite well over the last few weeks, but I am going to stay away from this match because Iam working on the theory that he has to get tired sooner or later and also because Srichaphan is very unpredictable at the moment.
Dont really like the look of anything in Memphis. Maybe Haas ($1.33) to beat Malisse, but that's it.
Like you Betsy i don't like to bet on the WTA too often anymore, but I like the look of Venus ($1.50) over Clijsters tonight. Kimmy should still be a little rusty after her long layoff and that will be a problem against Venuses powerful hitting.

I am new to this site and think the idea of a bet a day is wonderful. For 5 years I have compilled a database of all ATP players and results. This year I have had 24 bets for 22 winners and have 20% profit. Select favourites obviously.
Anyway thought I would like to contribute to this section.
Today Moya to beat Lapentti at Mexico. Got $1.22 at Ladbrokes.
karla909

My tip for Moya over Lapentti was successful today.
Tomorrow I like Canas over Devilder at Mexico.
Canas is a genuine clay courter who according to himself wants to finish in the top 8 this year. His South American season is only 1-1 this year, so he needs to get some ATP points. I think he really wants to do well here and against the qualifier Devilder should move on in the tournament. Having not played last week he should be refreshed and ready to go.
Haven't put my bet on yet as some of the places haven't put up their odds yet.
He is 1.25 at Centrebet

Canas was succesful for me today. I posted 1.25 but I only got $1.22.
Tomorrow I like Volandri over Montanes.
Volandri is an up and coming youngster with good clay court form over the last 6 months.
After a first round debacle last week, he has returned to form with wins over Zabaleta and Martin.
Montanes has had 8 straight first round defeats on clay before getting 2 easy matches to get to the quarters.
In their last 2 encounters, both in 2004 Volandri won 2+3 at $1.14 and 3+1 at $1.20.
The price is very short but he should come through.
Canbet = $1.25

Wangaratta Rc 4 No. 2 Perusen
I have been waiting a long time for this one to pop up again. I was on the horse it beat Stuff Up about 5 weeks ago, it looked all over the winner but Perusen absolutely flew and got him on the line. I think Perusen is a very promising galloper, he has had a few injuries but is on the way up now. The race over a mile he is in tommorow features the highly spruiked San Antonio, who won well last start so i think it could let Perusen get out to decent odds, the step up in distance looks ideal, drawn barrier 2, i think he will go very, very close. Ironically Stuff Up is in as well, both his runs have been enormous, he however is dropping 300m in distance and expect him to be very short if Perusen happens to get up.

Yeh that was a very nice run, i thought he was a little unlucky but had his chance and as stated 'Thems the breaks', and yes he definately is one to follow. He showed promise as a younger horse, and he's been racing really well this prep. Would have been nice to get up but money back with the eachies so i can put it on him next time.

If you didn't take him at the eachies, Steelworker Rc 4 No 1 tommorow night looks all over the winner. He is ultra consistent and his formlines around Lyrical Bid look outstanding now. He gets into this race ridiculously well after the claim as he'll end up only three over the limit, he carried 3kg more then Lyrical last time and was beaten 1/2 length. Drawn perfectly in three, this looks his race, however i'm clearly stating the obvious he will be very short, wont take odds on but any morcel of black and white i will pounce on.

Oh dear. May still get up, but $1.55 doesn't look so good now.
I stuck with my usual system of backing the opposition pre-test and just waiting for Australia to blow out. I must admit I wasn't that confident that Australia WOULD blow out in the betting in this game, but in any case, the odds on NZ were simply too big to not have a small interest wager on them at least.

Sportz
10th March 2005, 07:32 PM
Well, normally I hardly even consider a draw when Australia's playing. However, I must admit that this time I didn't trust the kiwi weather or NZ's ability to bowl us out twice, so I decided to also have a small bet on the draw pre-test. I will still make a small loss if it ends in a draw though. If Australia wins I'll make a small profit and if NZ wins a bigger profit.

A bit late I know, but the Kings where specials in my book last night.
Basically because I needed them to win to complete my 8 leg multi that returned odds of $128.80.
Seriously though, they won the first GF game by 20+, 2nd game away by 20+
and ended up winning easily last night.
In my multi they where $1.63 to win the GF series!!!
My tip for today is Newcastle Knights to get the wooden spoon in 2005, curently $8.00 with TABSportsbet.
Beting is suspended until the end of this weeks round, Johns is having scans for a suspected hip injury, if they lose him they will struggle against the bye next weekend. ;) They will not beat the Cowboys at Dairy Farmers the following week and the onlty 2 points after four rounds will have come from the bye. No Andrew Johns = a loss to Souths in week 5 also.
If they lose Johns to injury, even for a week or two their price will surely shorten.

Thursday, Cranbourne Rc 2 No 5-Chronic Addiction. Each Way or Place bet.
Have been doing video analysis of maidens in recent times and this looks one of the best propositions of yet. Her run the other day @ Echuca was enormous after jumping well from (11) she got caught wide the whole way, went for inside runs in the straight but got chopped out but still finished gamely for 5th 4 lengths behind the winner. Form out of the race has also been first class; the winner hasn't raced of yet but the second horse Any Dane Now's next start was a C1 win and she has been nominated for the Valley Saturday, 3rd horse Skaters Waltz next start returned a maiden win (very nice run), and 4th placegetter Caberat Lady was also a next start maiden winner. The field thursday is not strong and i think the horse has a v.g. chance to win but it is a maiden so i suggest an E/W or straight out Place bet.

That was an extremely dissapointing run, sorry if anyone followed. She was very well backed, obviously hard to get a smoky in this game but never gave a yelp. That happens though and i wont let it get me down.
Tommorow Bendigo Rc 2 No 1 Correct Amoondoo E/W or Place bet.
This horses two runs at Cranbourne and Mornington have both been quite good, after drawing horribly in both (has done so again tommorow but small field) he has jumped well and ambled up to take a forward position in the breeze and battled on well both times. It looks as if the 1600 should suit as he settled much better last time then his first run when he pulled his head off, and was very strong @ the end of 1400. There doesn't appear to be much speed in the race so expect him to either cross for the lead or sit outside the leader. His main danger looks to be Roccabarocca who has been racing in better grade but is still a miaden after 12 starts and is starting to get expensive for followers, he will be short again tommorow. Another in the market will be Rapid Girl who ran 4th in a good race @ Bendigo last time, but had all the favors coming from last in a crajerjack speed race and not going around a horse, could be unders for mine. Correct Amoondoo looks a place certainty in this weak race and a good chance to win.

Stoopid Man U could only manage a nil all draw with Blackburn. I was sooo close to putting Arsenal in that bet instead of Man U, but I considered Arsenals penchant not to win when they have a UEFA cup game on during the week. Wish I had forgotten the UEFA cup game as Arsenal beat Norwich 3-0. :(
While I am at it what happened to Newcastle's so called form beaten at home by Aston Villa 3-0.
Schalke got up o/night as did Kimmy Clijsters.
I still reckon the Roosters and the Warriors should both win easily today.

Well Correct Amoondo did the right thing by us hopefully this one can aswell.
One from my blackbook resuming today is;
Geelong Rc 5 No 7 Activation, to be placed
From the Graeme Rogerson Yard, he was entered for the Harrison Cup last week and i think he nearly would have won it with his racing style. This son of Zabeel has shown a good deal of potential but has always been a bit of a gunna horse, however he put the writing on the wall with a stong win at Werribee at his last start beating only 3 home but some quality such as recent city winner Rockford Bay. He goes forward in his races and from two will just about lead here. The fact that he's first up over 1400 in a C3 showcase when he's a C1 tells both he's fit and in form. A couple with good city form Garbo's Storm and Pinions, as well as some good country form like Message Bank and stong last start winner Keldanite, should ensure a decent price, but i think anything over $3 for the place, he is a must have.

I believe Vijah Singh to beat Westwood and Campbell in a 3ball shootout at (1.75) represents value
This has shortened immensely since it was put up yesterday where i got Singh at $2.00 - it is now around the 1.50 - 1.70 mark at the majority of online bookies, however you can get 1.75 at TAB Sportsbet (VIC). This will not last long after Singh's very good performance in the first round of the masters. He is currently the best of the 'Big Four' in this tournament
Westwood is at +6 and Chad Campbell is at 1 over par five shots behind the inform Singh
Anyway, if keen don't wait - get in quick as price on offer at TAB sportsbet will shorten

[QUOTE=Sportz]Well done. He placed, but not as big a div as you were hoping for though.
Cheers Sportz, race didn't pan out as i expected with him getting back a little, and i probably would have cancelled my bet half-way through the race if i could've. But he did the right thing and got home well for third and a $2.30 collect is better then a kick in the arse. Probably the Williams, Rogerson, Nikolic factor entered the odds aswell, but why not their strike rate is phenomonal.

Well i've got a smoky for Cranbourne Thursday, only me and Sportz know about it!
Rc 8 No. 2 Sonic Royal, to win if even money or better.
He has won his last three in superb style, I have been on this guy his last two starts, which have paid very well @ $12 and $5 respectively. I was going to tell ya's last start to get on but unfortunately my tip that day was Chronic Addiction, who ran like he needed to be addicted to something.
All Sonic's runs this prep have been impeccable, and he has carried decent weights in each, probably his best run was two starts back in a C1 showcase, where he sat 3 and 4 wide the whole way, was forced to cart himself into the race and finish very strongly to score over the talented A Tad Cool.
Next start he blew a C2 Showcase field away by 4 1/4 lengths working wonderfully through the field he was home 500m out. The 58kg wont bother him, and the field he meets Thursday is as weak as they come, with nearly half the field either Jumpers or average stayers resuming, and the rest aren't even near this horses quality. Perhaps main dangers Amoroof, Dunvegan, Sir Galaway and Silver Lining to a lesser extent, but Sonic Royal should be winning in the city by now.
From barrier one, with not much speed on i can see him settling in the first half-dozen make his move about 600m out, as he can sustain a great long sprint, and career away.
I know the ship has sailed and the odds are gone but i really expect him to win easily here, might actually struggle to get even money, but don't take much shorter as shit can always happen.
Cheers ED

I like the following bets wuth basketball today:
LA Clippers vs Utah - Over 189.5 ... ($1.85)
San Antonio vs Portland - Over 184.5 ... ($1.85)
New York vs Toronto - Under 203.5 ... ($1.85)
Phoenix vx New Orleans - Under 208.5 ...($1.85)
I did a very simple method of checking how to bet on these - Get the average of the points score in each of their games (using for and against) added them together and matched it up against the line tabsportsbet were using.

Yes, apart from ourselves, I think perhaps just a couple of other people might be waiting for this one! :D

Maybe 2 or 3.
But this is a sports-betting thread so the punters here know how to take short quotes.

1 down, 3 to go...New York and Toronto racked up 198 pts, and my little spreadsheet calculated them as scorning 198.4!!! i might be onto something here :D

Heavy track for Sonic Royal, still think he will win but am halving my original stake, as anything can happen in the bog especially with big weights.
