Yes, i know it a very open and near impossible question to ask, because of all the different types of race/horses, but it would still be good to hear peoples thoughts.

Manikato
Bernberough
Ajax
Sunline
Super Impose
Better Lossen Up
Carbine
Gunsynd
Octagonal

I guess it's all relative to each person and not necessarily which is the best of the list, but which is personally the best for each person. So rather than debate the merits of one horse over the other, here are my best , as they have been very kind to me and they bring back fond memories.
GALLOPS
Super Impose
Lonhro
HARNESS
Popular Alm (pacing)
Scotch Notch (trotting)

For me it's Kingston Town by a long way.
I have just finished reading a book about Rising Fast. Amazingly his record leaves that of Phar Lap's (for one) for dead, yet he doesn't receive legendary status, or indeed half the recognition he deserves.

Might and Power belongs in that list.

My ratings of the best horses I've seen since I started following racing in the late 70s:
1 Kingston Town 64.0
2 Manikato 63.5
3 Might And Power 63.5
4 Better Loosen Up 63.0
5 Northerly 63.0
6 Sunline 63.0
7 Dulcify 62.5
8 Let's Elope 62.5
9 Super Impose 62.5
10 Vo Rogue 62.5
Just outside my top 10, all rated on 62.0 are:
Lonhro, Bonecrusher, Hareeba, Schillaci, Saintly, Strawberry Road, Beau Zam, Placid Ark, Red Anchor and Octagonal.
By the way, I didn't consider Makybe Diva because she's still racing. Don't know quite where to rate her just yet.

Mark,,,i was reading a book the other day about Rising fast in the 55 melbourne Cup...had more weight on him than Phar lap in the 1930 MC ..copped interference was shuffled back to almost last ..had to concede 34lb to the eventual winner who shifted ground into the fast finishing Rising fast who lost by a half length..
Interesting that the jockey of the winner Topara was suspended for 2 months because of it.....weird how the connections didnt protest on the day...there would of been a heap of angry punters thinking the same thing.

Some interesting facts:
Grand Armee - won his first race start by 2.8 lengths
Octagonal - won his first race start by 2.8 lengths
Lonhro - won his second race start by 2.5 lengths
Sunline - won her first race start in NZ by an unknown margin
Super Impose - won his first race start by 3.5 lengths
Makybe Diva - won his second race start by 2.8 lengths
Elvstroem - won his first start by 0.8 lengths
Northerly - won his second start by 2 lengths
Interesting trend, get on the champs early and follow their career ;)

My favourite horse of all time is Northerly.
I love the story of the bulldog who never gives in.
Consequently my hero as a footballer in little Libba
Fav. surfer is Occy
Fav. Tennis player Agassi
All have had their backs to the wall and have pulled out tremendous courage to get over the line, even if it takes:
-a horse heading you in the straight
-a few years of soul searching
-a massive 5 setter.
Thats a champion to me

I have not followed racing for that long only a few years so obviously I am going ot have the likes of Northerly and Sunline in my list but another I would have in there was Dulcify obviously I didn't see alot of him but his Cox Plate win alone was outstanding.
Northerly
Sunline
Dulcify
Super Impose
Rough Habit
Filante

I go back to mid 70s - Kingston Town stands alone.
Next in a bunch are Manikato, Sunline, Might And Power, Northerly, Let's Elope, Better Loosen Up, Octagonal, Red Anchor.
From my reading I'd say Tulloch was robbed of the all time best title through illness and a poor decision not to run in and win the 1957 Melbourne Cup.
For those who don't remember KT, the euphoria surrounding the excellent effort of Elvstroem on Saturday ( one idiot named Bartley said in the Sunday paper it was one of the greatest ever wins in Victorian racing !!!!! ) was equalled or surpassed by the King countless times. He broke 1.10 for 1200m and won Syndey Cups, Cox Plates, Derbies, G1 miles and in 4 states of Australia.
That's a champion.

I'm also a big fan of wenona girl who doesnt seem to get many mentions in these sorts of discussions. I think over 2000m wfa Northerly would win against any horse past or present.
