Welcome to the Football Punters Comp thread. Please feel free to join in.

The comp will run from Thursday, February 17 to Sunday October 2. The cutoff point to begin betting is the 31st of March. Anyone who hasn't made at least one bet before the 1st of April will unfortunately miss out. The bookmakers we will be using are:

<span class="style2"><a href="http://www.iasbetaffiliate.com/e.asp?e=22&amp;id=1085" target="_blank"><b>IAS Bet </b></a></span>

<a href="http://partners.sportingbet.com.au/processing/clickthrgh.asp?btag=a_4b_149" target="_blank"><b>Sportingbet Australia </b></a></span>

sportodds.com

You can use any of the bet types they offer on AFL, League or Union matches.

I'm sure there will be some things in the rules that not everyone agrees with. I'm sorry about that. Can't please everyone.

RULES
Starting bank: $500
Number Of Bets: Minimum of 50, Maximum of 200
Bet Sizes: $10, $20, $30, $40 or $50
Mult-bets: Maximum of 5 legs
No 'futures' betting allowed

A quick explanation. Everyone has a starting bank of $500. Obviously the object of the game is to build on that $500 so that you end up with the highest amount in the bank on Oct2. Everyone must make at least 50 bets during the comp to qualify and nobody is allowed to make more than 200 bets. To keep things as simple as possible, I've decided we can only use bet sizes of $10, $20, $30, $40 and $50. Also to keep things simple, I've put a limit of 5 legs on the multi-bets. Some may be disappointed with that, but 5 legs will still allow you to go for a good return without things getting out of hand. There is no 'futures' betting in this comp (unfortunately for me). By that I mean you can't place a bet now on who will win the Brownlow or the Premiership etc etc. You can only bet on events that are happening within the next 7 days.

Of course, it goes without saying that you must post your selections before the starting time of the match and certainly no editing of posts after starting time. When posting your selections, please set them out very clearly so everyone knows exactly what the bet is. Please state your opening balance, bet number, match, bet type, your selection, bet size, latest odds, possible winning amount and closing balance. Something like this:

Opening Balance $500
Bet number 1
St George vs Souths
St George to win
$40 @ $1.45 ($58.00)
Closing balance $460

I will keep a record and post an updated leaderboard after each weekend. Even so, could everyone try to make absolutely sure that you don't make any mistakes with your adding up etc.

Good luck! :)

What tab are you using
Can you roll your own starts and use in multis etc
Prices vary from tab to tab
Maybe we either all use the same tab or we stipulate which tab when placing bets.
Also can you cancel before the game if say someone has a late injury etc
Cheers

How about we use the 30 minute editing cutoff point that is on posts? In other words you get just 30 minutes to edit your post changing or cancelling your bet. Any later than that, bad luck. After all, in the real world, if you put a bet on on Friday and one of the top players gets injured just before the game on Sunday, you can't cancel your bet can you?

Rabbitz, these are the bookies you can use: Sportingbet Australia, IAS bet, Sportodds

Bookie,

I'm sorry, but did you read the introductory post with all the rules? :o

Don't you want to check out the odds on the three sites and pick out the best odds for your selections? If I had to check out the odds for everybody's tips, it would be an enormous amount of work for me, so the idea is for you to check out the 3 bookies, find the best odds and post your selections here with those odds. Unfortunately, prices are only up on tonight's 2 games, so you can't bet on the other 6 games yet. If you can't come back on here later to post your bets in those other 6 games, then perhaps you can give them a miss this week. Also, you can only use the following bet sizes: $10, $20, $30, $40 & $50, so I'm sorry, no $25 bet please.

Here's an example of how I'd like you to set your posts out:

Opening Balance: $500
Bet 1: Head to Head (IAS)
Fremantle $30 @ $1.80 ($54.00)
Closing Balance: $470

We're not off to a good start. :(

thebookie
18th February 2005, 11:37 AM
Sorry champ.

Can I make the $25's now $30?

And can I use the odds from Norm Short? He's up on all games. Or TAB Sportsbet?

Sportz
18th February 2005, 11:44 AM
No, I'm very sorry. We're using just the 3 bookies - Sportingbet, IAS and Sportodds. Hopefully at least one of them should have their odds up on all games by tonight. Can you come back on over the weekend to post selections?

Sportz
18th February 2005, 12:18 PM
So Bookie, can I put you down for this bet then?

Bet 1: Head to Head (IAS)
Fremantle $30 @ $1.80 ($54.00)
Closing Balance: $470

After that, the rest is up to you. Sportodds has prices up on a few more games now.

We're not off to a good start. :(

Come on Sportz!
Be a sport.Let me hold your hand.I'm sure this thread will be the thread of all time.
Yes I think that if people wish to enter the comp. they need to follow the rules.I'm sure there are lots of punters out there who will monitor proceedings and use the tips placed as guidelines in their real punting.
So lets put a bit of effort in our selections boys!

moeee
18th February 2005, 12:34 PM
Sportodds has prices up on a few more games now.

I think we should endorse the prices of the Forum operators advertised supporters only.(IAS,Sportingbet).
Not that Norm Short is bad.It makes it much easier for Sportznut, and helps the Ozmium group in their endeavours.
But for Multi bets, then Sportodds prices being the chosen ones.
Only because they offer the pick-your-own margins.

thebookie

Sportz
19th February 2005, 08:37 PM
Yeah, I'm going to take it really cautious for a start. I just went for a multi with what I thought were 'safe' results.... Collingwood and Fremantle with 39.5 points start, St Kilda to win and St George with 12.5 points start. Got the first 3 legs up although St Kilda worried me for a while, but it looks like St George are going to let me down. They're down by 18 with 8 minutes left!!! :(

Should have just backed Melbourne to beat Brisbane. Was pretty confident that would happen, but didn't have the guts to back my judgement.

Yeah well Sportz old mate I would have added St Kilda to that one but the prices werent up this morning so it could have been $8.35 with the divi $1.22 on top.I dont think its that outrageous with the only game concerning me is the reds.Cheers

Mr J, I assume they were with IAS. They may not put up a line on the Reds game if it's a line ball game. In that case, why not simply look at the 3 bookmakers to find the best price for the Reds to win. I think you should get fairly close to the $1.90 mark. Alternatively, Sportodds has the Reds (-1.5) at $1.95.

Rabbitz,

Too many problems would arise I think. I was actually planning on cutting out the trifecta and all-up altogether and just going back to straight forward Win and Each Way betting. Not quite so exciting but a lot easier for all.

As for the Reds, I wasn't confident about them at all. They had every chance of winning that game, but just didn't know how and why the hell wasn't Flatley kicking for them??? I reckon they'll probably be on zero points after 4 rounds.

I'm not skipping the more marginal bets since my system still does quite well on them. I intend to bet ALL of my S12/AFL/NRL picks here. That's going to be around 350 or so bets, so the idea is to bet as singles and hopefully build up a balance, so that I can then bet as multis without so much risk.

I notice sportz above me has included the win amount as the total returned. I only included the profit amount. Probally better to include total returned since we're deducting bet amounts from balance, so I changed mine.

Sportz
4th March 2005, 02:23 PM
Mr J,

I assumed you'd want to bet on all of the S12 games, but I didn't think you'd want to do the same with NRL & AFL too. By the way, I think if you wanted to bet on every S12, NRL & AFL game, it would actually be closer to 450 bets. I know your method works for you, but the reason why I put a limit of 200 bets on the comp is to make tipsters be a little bit selective, and so that people who don't want to bet on all 3 codes aren't disadvantaged.

Mr J
4th March 2005, 02:56 PM
"it would actually be closer to 450 bets."

I don't bet EVERY game ;) The bookies are usually more accurate later on in the season. I was only betting on around 75-80% of games near the end of AFL/NRL last year.

I'd like to be selective, but betting all my picks is the most reliable way to get ahead. If it means I have to bet multis for a large chunk of AFL/NRL then that's what I'll have to do.

I can't be selective because I can't be sure which are my best bets. My tests have shown that the picks perform similiar no matter how large their perceived advantage is. Large overlays don't really perform better because they are way off often enough to offset the accuracy of the other large overlays.

Personally, I had another shocker. Need to take a good look at what I'm doing.

Just curious as to why not just go straight out on the Waratahs?

Proof is in the pudding so they say. Warratahs 36 Vs Sharks 13

I thought the Tahs would win by at least that many but wasn't overly confident of them winning by more than 10, seems they did it easier than I had thought.

Go the Tahs!!! :D

Thanks sportz, i usually back what i tip in these comps, the amount might differ, but the way i look at it is, if i was having my last on something what would it be on and then i tip it, and with the better value i get the risk isn't as great, i've bit the dust a few times in the past on H2H multi's with 1 team letting me down and losing a lot lot higher stake, but i will look at every round individually and bet accordingly though.

Hi Sportz they had a lot of their injured players back.It says plenty about the Blues ability to go all the way.The AB selectors must be getting worried.
The Chiefs defence was magnificent even one of their props caught a center who was about to score.
It is a topsy-turvy comp at the mo' with no real stadouts.

For real I had chiefs winning by 7.5, so had reds +10.5. I think it was sportz that suggested that maybe I should only pick the bets I'm more confident in (for the comp anyway). Don't like backing the reds so no bet for the comp. Sportz owes me an extra $20 or so, but what's $20 going to mean in 200 bets time.

Mr J

Sorry Mr J. All my fault. :D

Do you bet on every game, no matter how close the line? Or are there some games you won't touch because you think the bookies have it pretty much spot on? My ratings had the Chiefs winning by 9, so I considered the start of 10.5 a bit close. As I said earlier, I did think about backing the Reds, but in the end, just couldn't bring myself to back a team that had such a poor record in NZ.

Yeh if it's too close I won't bet. My buffer is around 2pts (use a spreadsheet, probally similiar to the formula the guys have posted up).

E.g. the canes and the bulls. My line is -11.89, it'd only be a bet if I could get -9 or +14.5. It's -/+ 12.5 so no bet.

That was the only non bet for s12 for me this week.

For NRL, the first line I saw for the cowboys was +4.5, which wasn't a bet for me (I had +3.3). That was offshore, when I look in Aus I saw +5.5 which makes it a bet.

The broncos I have at -11.02, but the line is -10, so no bet.

I like to have a 'perceived' edge of at least 5% on every bet. So in theory my system (if it works) should hit better than 5%ROI (55% winner against the line).

So it's not that I bet EVERYTHING, it's that I bet all games my system says I have an edge on (which seems to be most). Some games a no bets at one bookie but a bet at another. The +4.5 vs +5.5 for the cowboys was a great example. You can often find a pt better by shopping around the aussie and offshore books.

This week, my line vs the bookies:
NRL
Cowboys +3.3 vs +5.5
Raiders -7.88 vs -4.5 (this is what I got, most are -5 or -6).
Broncos -11.02 vs -10
Dragons -8.12 vs +1.5

S12
Chiefs -7.39 vs +10.5
Hurricanes -11.89 vs -12.5
Blues -4.95 vs +6
NSW -13.34 vs -5.5
Cats +4.26 vs +11
Sharks -1 vs -4.5

So some are close and some are far off. Results suggest that I do have a larger advantage on the larger overlays (ie the further my price is from the bookies), but not in proportion to how far it is actually off. E.g. my perceived 5% edges have hit 6-7% ROI. My perceived 20% edges have hit 10-15% ROI etc. Those figures are made up but it's just to show that when my lines are close to the bookies I'm more accurate than my perceived edge suggests, and when I'm way off from the bookies, I'm either way off or they are (and it's more often them than me).

"Wow. What happened Mr J? The gremlins seem to have stolen $210 from your balance."

How about we call it a handicap. If I managed to win this comp from that balance, I will be a very very very very very very happy man. Means I probally made 30-40 units :)

It depends. Last year I backed St Kilda pre-season at $8. Then I backed Brisbane and Port Adelaide mid season at $3.85 & $7.50. Come Grand Final day I was sitting on a minimum of 87.5% profit, no matter the result of the game. Wouldn't have done as well if I had waited till Rd 22. The one bet that I reckon you really should wait until Rd 22 for is the Brownlow.
