I'll just blow my own horn on Lovely Jubly.
Has anyone noticed that Mr Ed, whose tipping form had been outstanding, has disappeared off the planet? Anyone seen a talking horse recently?

G'day Placegetter, sorry I by-passed you. Yes, you've definitely been a consistent big wrap for the classy Lovely Jubly in these forums and I hope you had a good collect, even for the place. It was just never going to miss, was it? Good on you! Placegetter, I don't believe for a second that you, of all people, would ever wear a sad frown like the blue face above. Your postings are always pointed, positive and balanced, like a top jockey knowing he's got a good steed under him. Top rate stuff
Can't help you with the Mr Ed question. I always used to watch I Dream Of Jeannie!

Numerator, I extended myself on LJ last week. On the nose mate, THAT'S how much I rated her!
Okay, you got me, a frown is just a smile upside down! I was just trying to get some attention and plus everyone else uses those "emoticons" (I even know the terminology!) so I thought I'd have a go myself
Here's a question for those reading this thread.
Did you win or lose your first bet? I'm going to guess most of you won.

I don't remember my first bet but my first win was on Piping Lane in the '72 Cup in a sweep.
I was in Year Two at a Convent school and won 80c in a 10c sweep. The divvy for the winner was supposed to be $1.60 but the bloody nuns made us put half our winnings in the poor box!!!
Little did Sister Bridgette know that she started the horrible concept of "rounding down" which the TAB has embraced so enthusiastically.

Placegetter, my very first bet LOST. In primary school, a kid called Craig ended up with all my marbles including my best alley. I never should have claimed the Marble King title.
First bet on a racecourse - Sandown Park greyhounds, early eighties, a WINNER at 20/1 with a concession bookie! Berringa Lass, I think. Pure luck!!

Hi Everyone,
I was a first bet winner (as far as personally placed wagers are concerned). Princess Eulogy winning the 1973 Toorak Handicap (before it was subjected to its various sponsors' name changes) at Caulfield had me thinking I was a form genius. Assuredly, I was set straight during the long apprenticeship in racing's reality that ensued. I consider myself still a punting apprentice!
What about everyone else?

gday, have followed the horses and dogs since i was around 9 and 10ish with my grandad on a saturday afternoon.
at a country greyhound meeting( pt Augusta south australia ) when i was 13 around 9 years ago, had my tips i had done on the friday night, was an eight race meeting, tagged along with dad.
first 5 races my tips won, got everyone interested so in the sixth dad went halves in a bet with me, first loser of the day, followed by the next two losers in race 7 and 8, went home broke and been chasing my losses ever since lol:)

the posting regarding the 72 Cup that Piping lane won,i was in Alice Springs, and in those days they had the betting shops, off course bookmaker,a mate and i went to have a flutter, and it was a disaster as the place was full of once a year punters and most of them were tourists of all nations. So the bookmaker made up a example of a betting slip,to show everyone how to fill them out and i as i can best remember, this huge cardboard example of a betting slip was attached to the wall, and the horse number selected was i think no16,not long after the bookie was paying out by the truckload,as history records Piping Lane no 16 40/1 won the cup,the tourists must have thought that what a place where the bookie ..not only shows you how to have a bet,but gives you the winner.

allup,
What a great story! I loved it. Welcome and best of luck.
For the record, my first bet was a win on Adelaide Cup day way back when. I boxed three horses in a trifecta and had picked them in order, so could have saved myself $5 out of $6. Thought I was going to collect a squillion, but every other punter had my idea, so the payout was $64 instead!!
I really enjoy the forum guys (and gals), keep it fun.

this was not exactly my first bet but the two biggest trifectas i ever scored were when i took the wrong numbers.
one of these was pleach, triumphal march and hyperno (got third at 80/1) bet should have been royal regatta instead of hyperno but put the wrong numbers on.
but it was a moment of great joy.

My first "big" win was in 1988...
I consulted the "I Ching" and it gave me a certain hexagram- I tried to figure out how to use this in betting, when my eyes caught on the name of a horse which matched the name of the Hexagram virtually perfectly!
Being not too rich and unwilling to believe this as anything but a coincidence, I backed the horse 10 Rand(South African) each way.
The horse won by a neck- payout 30-1 for a win and about 33-1 for the place! I walked out of there on a cloud with about 350 in my pocket- about a third of my monthly paycheque!
I immediately consulted the oracle again- and got the answer that "The sage will answer a foolish question once; after that foolish questions will get foolish answers"!!!

My first bet wasn't successful. I backed Reckless in the 77 Melbourne Cup for the win only. He ran a game second to Gold And Black, but I was genuinely disappointed for Tommy Woodcock. What a great ambassador for racing he was.
My first big win was on Maybe Mahal in the Doncaster the next year. I scored a few very nice dividends from her wins.
