View Full Version : Quarter Horse Races
I think their (or is it there - i forget) is too many ordinary race horses running around midweek.
Why not replace some of these races, with Quarter horse races - 400m-800m races.
Would be a great spectacle, also would be fun to speed rate some of these horses.
Punters will bet on anything if it is exciting.

Hey now that's a damn fine idea!
And times would be of value there!
Didn't Bob Jane have something like that going in Victoria a few years back?

I agree chief.
If the southern states can cater for snail paced 10YO geldings racing over 4000m and 20 obstacles in the middle of winter why can't we in the northern states go the other way and introduce something exciting like 400m - 600m races.
It has to beat the off season racing in Sydney as it presently stands.
Didn't quarter horse racing take place in Queensland in the 70's and 80's?

There is actually a Quarter Horse race track in Canberra (not part of the normal racecourse - it is near exhibition park) but I don't know if it ever gets used. Certainly haven't heard of any meetings there in recent times. I agree it would be a good thing to watch - could be a bit of a lottery betting on it though!

I have an uncle that breeds quarter horses - they are mainly used for cutting in rodeo shows.
Seems a waste that we have to limit punters to weak thoroughbred races midweek, unless they follow the red hots or dogs.
I enjoy the dogs and trots, however would be great if we had quarter horse races.
They could start by having 2 or 3 races each Wednesday and only have 5 thoroughbred races. Then build it from there.
They could also have a few on Thursday night - pissed punters in pubtabs around the country would love it!!
Think about it? The Slipper is a sprint race for babies, yet it attracts millions of dollars and plenty of interest from punters.
Quarter horses are much faster than thoroughbreds over 400-600m.
More betting options - have doubles and trebles combining both quarter horse races and thoroughbreds.
Maybe they should dig up the Kensington track and use it as a dirt track for quarter horse races midweek.
Punters are sick and tired of the same old boring mid week races, time for something new.
