Does anyone think Universal Prince will run in the Cox Plate or would they be better off saving him for a crack at the Melbourne Cup , without having the pressure of the Cox Plate run?

My Early Selections
1.Lonhro
2.Northerly
3.Don Eduardo.

Wouldn't mind the $8.00 and back both Northerly and Sunline, anything can run third though.

Equal 1st Lonhro
Equal 1st Victory Vein
3rd Elegant Fashion

....... but anyone who can pick three STARTERS in three at this stage, let alone the placegetters, would be doing well. Four months is a long time away.

Selections in no particular order;

Carneige express
Lonhro
Calaway gal
victory vein

I feel that Don E will go for the Caulfield & Melbourne cups

Good punting

Sunday, 20 October 2002: A crack field of at least eight seems likely to go to the post for Saturday's $3 million W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley following confirmation that Caulfield Cup runner-up Fields Of Omagh will be an acceptor.

Connections made their decision on Sunday after finding Fields Of Omagh had taken no harm from his Caulfield Cup second to Northerly.

With Gai Waterhouse also planning to run Saturday's Caulfield winner Assertive Lad and the three-year-old Bel Esprit also set to run, the Cox Plate will boast considerable depth.

Fields Of Omagh, Assertive Lad and Bel Esprit join Lonhro, Northerly, Sunline, Defier and the Godolphin star Grandera in what is shaping as one of the best Cox Plates of the modern era.

A ninth runner depends on whether the Moonee Valley Racing Club decide on include the Bart Cummings-trained Ustinov in the final field if the champion trainer pays the final declaration fee of $16,500 as expected on Tuesday morning.

The MVRC has a policy of hand-picking the Cox Plate field and it has been suggested Ustinov does not deserve a start because he hasn’t won for 12 months.

However he did show a return to form when he finished third to Lonhro and Sunline in the Yalumba Stakes, beating home Caulfield Cup placegetter Republic Lass, and it will be hard to deny a horse a Cox Plate start with such a strong last start form line

Lonhro retains Cox Plate favouritism despite Northerly’s grand Caulfield Cup victory and the huge public support Sunline will attract in her last race.

Trainer Fred Kersley gave Northerly a clean bill of health on Sunday after his Caulfield Cup heroics.

"He was bright and alert this morning, he's eaten up and I really couldn't be much happier with him," Kersley said.

Sunline's trainer Trevor McKee is also pleased with his mare's progress since her second to Lonhro in the Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield on October 12.

McKee is preparing for an emotional Sunline farewell on Saturday after announcing that the Cox Plate will bring down the curtain on one of the greatest careers of the Australasian turf.

"It's going to be tough, I won't say there'll be tears, but it will be a very emotional day," McKee said.

McKee has not confirmed reports that Sunline has been sold for to an undisclosed buyer - tipped to be the Maktoum family of Dubai – for a seven figure amount for breeding.

The Maktoums will see World Racing Series leader Grandera carry the Godolphin colours in the Cox Plate with Frankie Dettori as his rider.

The surprise Cox Plate runner will be Assertive Lad, last year’s Doncaster Handicap winner who had failed to fire in two starts after a lengthy spell before surging back to winning form on Saturday.

Waterhouse said she had almost declined to pay up for Assertive Lad in the Cox Plate, but his win had proved he had overcome his niggling problems.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think Sunline may be unplaced in the Cox - think Bel Esprit is likely to put pressure on very early in the race, with Northerly chiming in to complete the job, holding off both Defier & Lonhro in the run to the line.

Leaving out Grandera - too much of an unknown quantity (against our horses) to risk my money.

Good luck to all in what will be a great race. One I'm sure will be easier to read come monday. I'm sticking with the horse I've been keen on for last few months, especially with the price of 8-1....Defier.
To beat this field will be an amazing effort for whoever the winner is. Well done to all who have posted their thoughts.

Cheers

Hi Cosmo, yes he is a determined horse all right. I just wonder about the fact he hasn't started for a month? Funny kind of prep to come in against these stars...?

How did Ustinov get in ?? Only 2 wins from 21 & hasn't won for a year.

Ustinov reminds me alot of Beat The Fade a couple of years ago , both trained by Bart and both controversally allowed into the field at over 100/1.

I remember Bart saying that he (Beat The Fade) had little or no chance of winning but was counting on him finishing in the field where he could win more prizemoney then the cost of paying up for the race which i reckon is pretty understandable.

And of course Beat The Fade did make enough money to pay for the race plus some (not to sure where he did finish)

Can anyone remember or am i just imagining it?

Is the Caulfield cup still a Group 1?

I'm just impressed that I picked three that are still running. Have to like Lonhro at this late stage, but at who's expense?

Good luck to all.

Anyone out there explain why all the hype with GRANDERA. Just seen some form for the first time, seems last two runs over 2000m (both on good tracks) produced winning times of 2.4.43 (with 57kg) and 2.4.7 (with 59kg). Does not strike me as that flash, what am I missing?

Your probably not missing anything Sandgroper. I think the hype may come from 11 May this year when he won a mile and a quarter G1 at Krangi in 2.01.30 Good, by 2 lengths, then Prince of Wales G1 in 2.04.43 Good to Firm, by 5 lengths. He definately wasn't stretched on the last occassion. Maybe the confidence of the Goldophins is why all the attention, but doubt anyone would seriously think he can beat these. I know this little black duck wont be backing him... Still, glad he is in it, and what if he does win? Anybody willing to offer to run naked down the Flemington straight on Melbourne Cup day if he does? I'd like to see that!

My Tip for the Cox Plate - Ustinov will be great value.

I see a charge up front as everything will be trying to take on Sunline or sit just behind her. Assertive Lad will certainly take her on for a long way and if I'm not mistaken Grandera is a leader.

Bel Esprit will be ridden from the tail of the field again with Fields Of Omagh.

There's going to be a lot of interference on the turn and in the straight - Ustinov just may cause an upset and his odds will be trimmed massively for the Cup if he even places.

OOPS - Just knocked my crystal ball off the table and it smashed! My punting days are over.

I would have to say Equine, that if there was to be a smokey, Ustinov would be it. He has a powerful finish, and if the race was 2400, he would get these. Still, Cox Plate is always won by the best horse, and the best horse is Lonhro! Sorry Sunline fans, I truely hope she wins for the swansong. A bit of sting out of the track could sway me though. Cheers

He may not win, but whoever beats him will know they've been in the race.

Hey, what do you make of these comments by Dermot Weld?

From AAP:

"Saying Grandera is the best mile-and-a-quarter horse in the world is ludicrous," Weld said.

"He's a very good horse, but he's going to run in a very good race," Weld told radio 3AW.

"So don't get carried away."

Which is where the confusion arises.

Best in the world or not, Weld said Grandera would still win Saturday's $3 million race at Moonee Valley.

"I think he'll probably win, but I don't think he's the best 2000m horse in the world," he said.

Bugger Me? :???:

Equine Investor

He's trying to say he's going to win The Melbourne Cup because his horses are better by a mile than Vintage Crop.

Way to build tension....

Looking at the early picks back in June, think Sandgroper did perhaps best tipping Northerly to win and Grandera for 2nd, other tip Silvano didn’t make it to the race – well done Perth Placegetter! By the way, no ratings posted today?

More recently – Rogan Josh tipped 1st, 3rd & 4th – in that order, BettyBoop tipped 1st & 2nd and had the audacity to suggest that Sunline would not run a place  and croft reminder us just how good Northerly is.

BettyBoop

It was sad to see, but Sunline did battle all the way to the line. I remember seeing her first run back from a spell in NZ, she didn't look herself. Then a longer than normal break before her next start. Think there might be more to the story than meets the eye. Let's hope she does well in the breeding stakes. Can you imagine what they will asking for her progeny. They'll have to win a Cox Plate just to break even!

Betty-Boop I agree, her progeny will be extremely expensive to buy - perhaps even go to Godolphin overseas. If they indeed prove themselves on the track in three years time -can you imagine the scurry?

Might be able to pick up some Danehill bargains then!

By the way two important things I noticed about Sunline and Northerly on Saturday...

1. Sunline was the most fractious I have ever seen her before a race due to the crowd etc. Remember the old adage "run the race before even getting in the barriers"

2. Northerly was sweating badly around the kidney area after the race. This indicates a very hard run which may take it's toll on the horse. Generally the sweat should be clear - foaming is an indication that something could be amiss, bloodwise etc.

However, the horse is entitled to sweat up after winning a Cox Plate against a crackerjack field - but just something I noticed.
