Time To do Ratings
I read with much interest the actual time it takes to do the Ratings and Prices for 1 race .... 1 to 2 minutes ....I find this astonishing .... I take anything up to 30 minutes to do a 14 horse feild .....I use a spreadsheet and believe there are too many variances for horse to be rated on ....thought from ones brain to me is the greatest input 1 can have ...ie: slow beginner from barrier 1 over 1400 at Flemington ...Penalty say 3kgs fast beginner from Barrier 9 with 3 good beginners inside penalty 4.5 kgs...how can 1 program stuff like that ...I use 7 steps to come to my final rating for each horse ...after which my prices take only about a minute to finalise.
My Strike Rate = 30% + for top Rated Horse So I,ll ask the question .... Data Pragrammed Ratings Or Manual with Brain input |
Hi ,
I disagree, if I can. You take 7 steps to achive the rating. It these are the same 7 steps and you apply the same bonuses/penalties/ratings for the same ocurances to ALL horses manually then it can be programed. If you rely on intuition, feelings and intangible values then you arent doing ratings you are creating a market that suits your beleif at the time. Regardless congrats on your sucess Michal |
I just wanted to add, that the only difference with programed ratings is that they are always 100% consistant, not subject to errors, and realisticaly involve the same process as someone with a manuall method, only that method has already been done in a step by step maner and now is blisteringly acurate and fast. I have done a few projects myself and know that all things can be programed the only issue is that the user must be able to define the elements that he wants to automate. Spending 30 minutes on a race when a push of a button will do only wastes your time. I mean this from a discusion point of view, my intention isnt to have a go at how you create your ratings at all, I respect anyone who has the will to do the work required to do this be they manuall or automated.

Strike rates don't mean much on their own. If you have 20% SR and ave. div. is $7 thats good, but if your SR is 30% and ave. div. is $3 not good Cheers and good luck with it |
I think it depends entirely on your angle.
One angle I have takes 30 seconds to make selections over 5 states and 40 races. Another angle I have would take at least a couple of hours. It really all depends. There are people who pour over stewards reports, replays, dissect times for hours at a time and arrive at roughly the same point as the guy who clicks a button. But sometimes they have a bigger advantage. It's always been a view of mine, that if punters spent half as much time seeking out the best odds on their selections, as they did doing the form, they'd be much better off. I had occasion to be in the city of Melbourne the other day and stepped into a TAB with my laptop. A few guys were debating how much they should have on the odds on favourite. They were running from wallcharts to the newspaper, looking at the market movers, looking at the tips. They decided to have $100 each on the favourite. As it jumped, the favourite was $1.60 when the pool closed. They could have had $1.75 with Read, they could have had $1.90 with Betfair. That's a big difference on a short priced horse and a big difference at the end of the week. |
Ditto to all that Chrome. It's not rocket science.

Does it matter?
I spend about an hour or closer to 2 hours on a Race.
I get uncomfortable spending more than 2 hours per Ratings session. What is important is that you decide how much your time is worth. And get paid in winnings accordingly. It don't matter whether you rate 1 or 101 races. What aaaaes me off is when I spend 2 hours on a race and then the runners don't do even close as I calculated. I HATE THAT :( |
Time for Ratings
I think 1/2 an hour is ample when rating a 12 horse race .....yes I would say we are all in tghe same boat as you when we don,t get within cooee of a result. If you want we can chat ...I,m sure I could help you getting the time down ...maybe improve your results

Moee,
Just a question that is really at the heart of this discussion. If you could, have your method programed would you feel better to have the whole day rated in less time then it takes you now to do one race ? Or would you persevere making mistakes you arent even aware off, and wasting time better spend on sitting outside watching grass grow? You obviously select your races very carefully as I cant see you do more then 3 in a day with that kind of workload. If your method was programed you would still be able to select the races you like only but would have a choice from the lot. What about half your method programed ? Pressing a button doesent mean that everything might be programed , however spending 15 min per race and having the rest done in minutes instead of 1.45 hour must be a difference that would add quality of life that you cant imagine at the moment and ALL with the same RESULT. I say this with all due respect and I dont mean any offence , perheps thought provocing, but that is it. I have been there before, doing race analysis that seamed to take hours per race and it took 2.5 hours to do a race and we only did Saturdays, so I have been there and done that. I also got payed for my work in winnings. We all do what we can. I have now been on the other side as well, now that analysis is done in 20 min for a saturday with no mistakes of which I made plenty, and for ALL races on the day. I dont start my analysis untill I have WA scratchings at 10.30 am on race day, untill then I dont even know what meetings are on and I dont care. AND I still get payed for the whole lot of work in winnings. Just the same as before. I have helped several people, and the one overwhelming sentiment is the tremendous releif all these people felt having to dich the workload. Many have concearns that they will fall out of the loop or practice its natural as I have been there too but what is stopping you from doing the races after they raced without the presure and perhaps only then concentrate on horses that failed, to see what could have been done differently or improved ....... those 'were' the days, hour after hour working the form, did enjoy it then but simply wouldnt have the time or patience to do it now
average time to analyze a days racing all meets all races & arrive at selections for methods i follow = approx 1 hour + 1 to 2 hours in evening to record all placings/prices & review the day, look for improvements, either scratching head 'what went wrong' or pat on back 'yes you are a genius':) all the time trying to remember 'look at BIG PICTURE' now if i could just get something going on the trots... |
