The best bang for your buck please gentleman???
I'm re-thinking my current bet placement and strategy that has drifted into 'fairly slack'. IAS mostly for place and e/w bets and Stab for win bets [mostly] and a bit of convince when I need it, like being out and about but close to a TAB.
OK, the scenario is a 56k modem speed as a base median, not cable. Think SLOW! Generally there is no time to check prices up to the last minute and put bets on across 3 or 4 different accounts. However, 70% of my bets go on well before the jump if I know I'm not backing the probable favorite, so in that instance time isn't important. But 30% of the time it is. Goal: Max odds overall and must except bets from $5 to $500. 1. Best account for the place only and why ? 2. Ditto above but for win only ? 3. Ditto above but for e/w ? There might be one account that is best for all, but I doubt it. Please let me know what your experience is for best value or what your strategy would be if more than 1 account was being used . Remember: Slow modem and to make a phone bet the Internet connection must be terminated, so phone bets are often useless. Thanks for any thoughts. |
1st move ....
Get Cable |
Quote:
Likewise if you can get cable then do so, also get yourself a mobile if possible. Notwithstanding, probably the best is Sportsbet - they are the only onshore corporate bookie who offers best of the three totes on metro races for both WIN and importantly in your case PLACE. They also top fluctuation betting as well. |

If I could get cable I would. I [obviously] live in a small country town where motor cars still draw a crowd:-) Mobile coverage [yes I have one] is often very patchy on Saturdays if I'm out and about in the afternoon, which sometimes means from the Dargo pub to friends on farms [with computers I often use but don't like to use their telephone and I would have to disconnect from the INTERNET to do so anyway] anywhere within 150ks in from the coast in the Vic. high country. Heck, sometimes I'm even roaming around on a horse [a slow one] !! La Mer, Thanks for the sportsbet info. I will check them out. Problem with IAS is they offer best of 2 [only] TAB's and I'm sick of seeing the 3rd. TAB with a much better price. Especially for the place where it really counts. |
Hmmm, Sucker me. I opened a sportsbet account and naturally maximized the free bet offer of 20% of new member deposit. All well and good EXCEPT do you think I can find the 'free bet' button on ANY of the races I want to bet on? Not on your nelly. I guess If I pick a maiden race on a heavy track with 16 runners it will FINALLY come up so I can have my 'free' bet :-) R4 in Brisbane today? No Way!
Also the bells and whistles of 'best of three totes, I'm not sure if that is offered during the week or at country tracks[?] Any other 'down side' of this agency I should know about? |
The free bet button will apear on races they choose so you may have to wait until the weekend and yes you are correct they don't offer best of three on place tote at country and provincial races but the best of two excludes unitab i guess we can't have the best of everything but it is a lot better than some.
|
Well I love the site now.
The 'free bet' button finally came up in R3 Brisbane and I thought 'well it's free', so on went my system bet for the system I'm following today [this page] for R3 Brisbane: 'Eagle Farm R3/11 Mr Hornblower (1) 53.0 4yo b g (Ms T Green at Doomben) A Pattillo' WIN. WIN. WIN !! $200 @ $6.40 = $1280 THANK YOU VERY MUCH SPORTSBET !!! Thank you very much La Mer for putting me onto them [your commission is in the mail] :-) |

Well done Crash. I did state that the best of the three totes was for metro race, non-metro it's the best of SuperTab or RaceTab (as pointed out by by Shaun). Just how good is the best of the three totes, very, very good & I'm not sure just how long this option will be available. Example: I liked Robotic in the last @ Ascot - was fishing for a price on Betfair when I noticed a distortion in the three totes & went with that option. Result Robotic won, SP'ing @ $3.40 (after a late plunge) TF (Top fluc) was $3.80, BOTTT (Best of the three totes) $4.80!!! a whopping full unit over the TF. Can't ask for much more than that. |
Best bang for your buck??
That takes me back. Good old B&S balls in country towns where people like Crash ride around on horseback nude, and the women play pool and punch on... |
La Mer,
I backed Party's Air Ace in WA ['Party's Crash Challenge'] for a 'bit and a half' for the win [poor ************ it paid $1.10 for his place bet] as when I checked the race to see if it had run there was nothing near it odds wise. Easy money [today anyway]. Can you tell me what the 'best of country' odds option means[?] Is it good or should I go super, nsw or what option? Yes, I am happy with the Sportsbet site. It's quick too .....Thanks. |
Quote:
Trust me. They still happen [but I don't get my gear off as often nowadays] !!! |
Quote:
Country option means the best of the two biggest totes SuperTab or RaceTab, which I think overall would be better than the other options for non-metro races. |
Just my thoughts, I place half of my bet at "best country price" i.e. best of Supertab & NSW tab, and half at Unitab, this way you're guaranteed to have a return better than "ave. of 3" i.e. you've always got at least half your stake on the best of 3. one way or the other.

That a great idea Party. I wasn't completely happy about the compromises for country meeting [a lot of my bets]. I thought well, it's all swings and slides in the end and I'm not really going to be any better off than I was with AIS, overall. I will do the 50% 50% thing as you suggest and it should make a bit of a difference long term. 50% at best price is better than zero. Thanks. |

Sportbet has results pages so it is quite easy to verify the correct strategy. By my calculations on April 28, UniTab only returned 90.3% of the "Best non-UniTab". So going to the trouble of averaging reduces your return by ~5%. |
jfc, no time to the calculations today, but your post is worrying as it is the exact opposite of my findings LONG TERM, but you don't mean averaging by adding up the 3 totes and then dividing by 3 do you? as this definitly reduces the divi. I only back for the place at Ascot and every week for as long as I made records it was better to bet half at best odds and half at uni, though I haven't done the calculations for yesterday yet.
|
This is the mob I'm with. Simply give you the best of the three totes. And a 200 dollar starting amount.
betezy.com |
jfc and all, really busy today, but was intrigued by those mathes, so did a quick calculation at Perth for yesterday, places only unitab returned 54.75, and doing it the way I said i.e. half at best tote half at unitab returned 55.7, only a bout 2% difference, but the RIGHT way, so not sure about your figures, or maybe it is something particular to Perth????
Manygeese, Are you sure they pay best of 3 totes FOR THE PLACE ONLY??? and at country tracks? |
Quote:
Sat. Metro only, or all meetings all days win and place [only as well as ew]? That would be the 'simply' I like, but I very much doubt it :-) |
Quote:
PP, Coincidentally I also tried that Ascot Place exercise in an effort to stop dwelling on that Dockers' fiasco. $54.70 = Unitab $57.50 = Best of non-UniTab = 5.1% better That suggests that merely sticking with Best of NSW, VIC is superior to averaging. |

Revisited. Well , I took the trouble of joining up with this NT mob [no account deposit required] and I must say I'm impressed with the layout, speed and especially with the simple payout options: 'Best of three totes' any day, any type of bet and any race meeting. Their live tote feature is great, all three on the same page [no border adverts] and you can bet to jump with the super-fast bet sheet [they use a pop-up 'flash' rather than a new page to bet]. Their race select page [full screen width] also has no border advertising and requires no scrolling. You can instantly see any race and the jump time order. Slick. Best designed site and bet options I've ever seen and no bull, 'best of three' all the time. Leaves AIS and Sportsbet for dead. Well done manygeese. Thanks. |

That's not correct Crash, Betezy rules state the following: 60. All Australian Gallops dividends for clients on the best tote service are paid as following. 1. Win bets - Not less than Unitab, NSW and SuperTab final dividends for “City” Gallop meetings. Not less than NSW and Supertab final dividends for “Country” and “Provincial” Gallop meetings. 2. Each-way bets - Not less than Unitab, NSW and SuperTab final dividends for “City” Gallop meetings on the win component. Not less than NSW and Supertab final dividends for “Country” and “Provincial” Gallop meetings on the win component. The place component on each-way bets will not be less than the Unitab final dividend. 3. Place bets – All Place bets are guaranteed not to pay less than the UniTab final dividend. When it comes to place bets, there is no contest Sportsbet offer the best!! |
Yep La Mer your right,
Just off the phone to them. I grilled them and no, Santa did not come down my chimney !! I tell you what though, sportsbet could learn a thing or 2 from ezybet about site layout and ease of use. Speed of use too. |
Didn't realize that my self. In the main bet on the nose Saturday. Did have a place bet once and reckoned they hadn't done it right. Now I know why.
Anyway they suit me. Been with them six months and still haven't deposited a cent. The day will come though because I'm a pretty dumb punter. |
Manygeese, yes an easy mistake, but as I bet mainly for the place the divi is crucial, even getting $1.20 about Air Race on Saturday instead of $1.10 is essential 100% more in fact. But interesting to hear that you recommend them for the win bets.
|
After giving the site a whirl yesterday, I'd recommend them for the win bet too and that is my main bet. Place betting is only something I get into now and then, but get quickly bored with it. !x4 or 1x6 ew ain't bad though and that's what I'm messing about with a bit lately, but my place segment is wagered with sportsbet.

Bet Types
Evening all,
I'm with betezy and they continue to make improvements with their website. Even on a dialup, it is reasonbly quick. My only grizzle is that WA is not considered metro when it comes to City meetings. Disgraceful really. Regards, Swoop |
I'm still told privately that it is possible to get BETTER than best of 3 OFFSHORE, but have little to back that up any info anyone?
|
I'm sure you can Party. Problems though it doesn't matter where you bet if your a winner they will sack you or restrict how much you can bet to win. As low as $50 max [to win $50] in one case I know of. No such problem with the tote because it's not their money you win it's a % of the prize pool.
During the Sydney carnival did anyone read of that 86 yr old bloke that stagged up to a tote window at ranwick and plonked a green plastic rubbish bag down on the counter and wanted a $100,000 win bet [not sure of the race, or horse now] and a $10,000 2 horse quin. They counted it out and he had $113k, so 12k went on the quin and 101k the win. He won $505,000 on the win bet but the 2nd horse for the quin came last. A no questions asked bet. Theoretically he could do that every day of the week if he was lucky enough at any tote window. Try that with a bookie or any of the NT mob. They wouldn't accept even $100 bets if you were a high % winner. They only want mugs who mostly lose or [almost] mugs who win a bit, loose a bit and muddle along at best, but don't cost them money [like me and probably a few others here]. If anyone thinks that one day they are going to be living off the bookies [what do you think they are, mug punters?] is living in LA LA land. Betfair and TAB only. Ok, you'll get a little less divvy off the TAB's [who cares if your that good?] but at least you can legally do it. Kerry Packer could have really big bets with the bookies because they all knew he was a mug punter who mostly lost. The bookies just shared out the risk with each other because it was worth their while to do so. The Casino's welcomed him for the same reasons [although he scared the hell out of them a few times]. |
Lot of sense in what you say there, Crash (Isn't there always? :) )
Convenience, ease of betting, etc., etc. are all part of the deal. The extra few percent is worth having; but it has to be balanced by quite a few factors --- as you noted in your post. |
Here is a little tip for anyone wanting and instant free $100 credit:
Join Betezy BUT only put $100 into your account [I just wanted to try it out]. Yep, they give me another $100 straight up to bet with !!! Not something that's advertised because most punters would put more in first time to get the free $200. I just fluked it with a trial deposit. 20% on other accounts, 100% for this one [for small amounts obviously]. They must have a auto thing going where you get $100 free for amounts from $100 to $500 and $200 for amounts above 500 to $1000. |
Crash.
Couldnt agree more, If your winning with your selections, its free money (less time/effort/internet etc) If i get 100 unit free from XYZ bookie only to have my account "slowed", or i get 90 units free from XYZ tabs, no hassles, no restrictions, easy withdrawls/deposits, that hand little card one can use at the local to pull out funds, At the end of the day, sure there is better % with bookies, BUT ! After all, its a totaliser, my money, your money, bookies money, trainers money, owners money, THEY DONT CARE, they take their handling fee and give the leftovers to whom ever. RE Betezy, I used them for a while, i dont like the way the first pop up starts at WIN all the time ! hate it and it cost me money forgetting to change it. I dont like the fact that they give you $500 "credit" should you "wish" to use it, thats just asking for more trouble, use up all your bank,...then,...use their 500,...how long before the knock on the door,..."excuse me, we are collecting the debt owed by you to XYZ bookie,...um,...500 + collection fee + Intrest + GST thats 650 thanks ! Otherwise they are great, easy site, Cheers Ding |

Not a bad 'edge' eh?
|
Do you have to do anything specific to claim the free bet? I have just joined up and deposited $100, but that is all that is showing up in my account.
|
You don't have to do anything, just check 'account balance' again. They might be onto us [?]
|
I don't know why Centreracing is so unknown. They offer best of all 3 totes, all days, metro, provincial and country. They also have best fluc, fixed price and SP on certain metro meetings but I don't use it so can't comment too much on it.
The down side to their best of tote service: - betting closes at the advertised time not when the race jumps - payout limits of $1250 country and provincial and $3000 metro - no phone betting Cheers |
Quote:
Chinbok, they do offer a range of products, but the same problem as with most others for those like me who bet each-way or place. If you use their best of the totes services then the rules are that the place bets are paid @ home tote dividend. |

They rang me today, just to verify details, and said they were depositing $100. Pretty good eh. Thanks for the tip Crash.
