By the way, the name Oenone apparently means 'wood nymph' in greek!

Okay guys, is there anyone at the Olympics you want to see get beaten. Just tell me who they are and I'll tip them and bet on them!!! Can I stop 'em or what?

sportznut 16th August 2004 04:34 AM

Geez, I've just seen that the Aussie girl Sara Carrigan won the Road Race. You beauty! She wasn't really expected to figure I don't think. She was long odds in the betting.

sportznut 16th August 2004 04:45 AM

I wish I had gone with my hunch from earlier in the week and had a bet on the South Africans in the relay at $13. Instead, I just had a small bet on them at $2.75 last night to get back some of the money I bet on the USA.

Having said all that, it sure is good to see the americans get beaten in one event they would have marked down for victory. The 100 freestyle is interesting now. Schoeman and Neethling must both stand a chance. My longshot tip of Kaitlin Sandeno swam a good third in the 400 free. So close. Oh well, never mind.

Great to see that Petria won!

MENS 200M FREESTLE FINAL

Before the semi final

THORPE $1.45
PHELPS $3.50
VANHOOGENBAND $6.00
HACKETT $7.00

After the semi final

THORPE $1.60
VANHOOGENBAND $2.60
PHELPS $7.50
HACKETT $26.00

Saw thorpe's semifinal and he looked good but i missed hoogenbands,he must have done something special, still sticking with thorpe though.

having a little multi: @ $2.66

I THORPE
L.JONES
A.PEIRSOL [PTP]

sportznut 16th August 2004 06:41 PM

I didn't see Van Den Hoogenband either but 1:46.00 is damn good in a semi-final and his swim in the relay was nothing short of amazing! 46.79 secs!!! Even given the advantage of about .6 secs for a relay start, that still equates to a time that would have smashed his own 100m world record. He'll definitely be out in front tonight. It's just a matter of whether Thorpe, or even Phelps or Hackett can get him down. I don't think Hackett can win, so it's between the other three.

goldmember 16th August 2004 06:55 PM

Thought THORPE had PHELPS measure cruising to the line and i know vanhoogenband will lead, but he needs a decent lead to hold on, think the 200m is thorpes best dist now,not the 400m, i'm discounting the relay swim as thorpe was well back and the 100m isnt his best swim.

sportznut 16th August 2004 07:28 PM

When I looked at the relay splits from last night I was amazed at the first leg from the USA. Basically, Ian Crocker had a 'Barry Crocker'. 50.05 secs compared to Schoeman from South Africa 48.17. That gap was way too much to make up.

Hate to say it but reckon Hoogie looks a good thing and the $2.60 is amazing value. I just can't see hom reling him in.
I suugest if your alive in ur treble Goldmember you save on Rogan. His semi swim was very, very close to Piersol

sportznut 16th August 2004 07:52 PM

Yeah, I agree. I'm worried about the 200 too. I reckon he's going to be a fair way in front at the 100 and I'm just not confident that Thorpe's form is good enough to wear him down. I really hope you're right though Goldmember.

sportznut 16th August 2004 07:55 PM

These are the odds from TAB Sportsbet at the moment:

THORPE $1.60
VAN DEN HOOGENBAND $2.75
PHELPS $5.00
HACKETT $21.00

sportznut 16th August 2004 08:26 PM

Also worried about Liesel Jones. She IS the fastest swimmer in the race, but she has a habit of disappointing in big finals. Hope she puts it all together tonight.

Not this time, she is really focused on this event and will be too good for this field, hope hanson can fill 2nd spot, that would be great, cant see quinella betting on sportstab which is dissapointing,so the 1500m will be just a watcher with hackett @$1.01

sportznut 16th August 2004 09:10 PM

Do you think anyone else knows what we're referring to?

goldmember 16th August 2004 09:15 PM

You mean GOAT, yeah i think everybody has heard his mouth being the Greatest Of All Time, but then i didnt find out till later that he has a tattoo with the spaces inbetween spelling goat, thought that was over the top

sportznut 16th August 2004 09:19 PM

Not quite sure who I hate more, the American sprinters or the so called 'Dream Team'.

goldmember 16th August 2004 09:28 PM

I think you have to go with the sprinters, because the dream team is a nightmare at the moment.

It is a funny phenomena how if your watching an event and it becomes clear that an Aussie can't win, you barrack for the rest of the world to beat a Yank. They are fairly unlikeable. A bit like when you're in the tote and theres always 1 loudmouth carrying on and shouting for his horse which is usually racing in another state and you just pray that he gets beaten, prefferably in a tight photo.

sportznut 16th August 2004 10:39 PM

That's so true!!!

sportznut 17th August 2004 04:38 AM

Well done Thorpey. I haven't seen the race yet, but judging by the splits, Van Den Hoogenband certainly wasn't far enough ahead coming to the last 50. Looks like Ian swam a great race and had things pretty much under control the whole way.

Another minor medal to Liesel Jones. Unfortunately that's becoming a regular thing. She just doesn't seem to be able to swim her best when it comes to finals.

Mr J 17th August 2004 04:42 AM

Big payoff on the chinese girl. Yep sportz I'm still up, Olympics are a great opportunity to make money

sportznut 17th August 2004 07:18 AM

Yeah, I couldn't believe the odds yesterday. Luo has a very good record and shouldn't have been so long in the betting. I don't want to use that nasty sporting term that I'm thinking of to describe Liesel, but unfortunately it fits. In major events, she always seems to swim faster in heats and semis than she does in the final.
