I backed Pompeii Ruler for a place. :(

Horse Whisperer 19th August 2006 03:47 PM

i backed it to chuck, thought the odds were unbeleivable, was gunna chuck a bit more on just before the jump. like you said still great place odds. thought this horse was good, coming that close to paratroopers its gotta be respected now you would think.

how bout thin and crispy in the liston. this horse WILL win a big race, and im gunna be on it when it does, should have been at least top 3 today if not winning it from where it was.

I agree. Starting to think it needs a new jockey. It sees more aarrse* than a peeping tom.

Sportz 19th August 2006 04:20 PM

I was a BIG fan of Pompeii Ruler back in the Autumn. I was hoping that they would go for some of the big ones, but instead they decided to put him away for the spring. Looks like a wise decision now. Just wish I hadn't let all the so called experts dampen my enthusiasm for him today.

Sorry to be missing in action but I've had a serious telco problem. I just now have managed to get a 56k connection going to tide me over until Telstra fixes mt ADSL next week.

It is now 5.04pm. Late but not to late to take a stab at the last 3 races in Perth if that is OK with you Spotz and my partner for this week[?]

crash 19th August 2006 05:25 PM

No luck in race 6 [didn't see Havey on the bottom weight from my quick glimpse at the Age form guide :-) ].

Sportz 19th August 2006 06:37 PM

crash,

You sure know how to make things difficult, don't you?

You got a winner with that last race in Perth, so that takes you past Real Deal's score. But it hardly seems fair on Real Deal if you are credited with a win as he managed to get all his tips in on time. Even if you had posted your tips after the 1pm deadline, but before the feature race, I would have been willing to accept them. But not as late as this.

So, although I understand that you have had problems getting on the forum, in all fairness to other competitors, I'm afraid I can't really accept those tips.

I'm very sorry about that. :o

For future reference, the absolute final deadline for posting tips is the start time of the feature race of the day.

crash 19th August 2006 08:37 PM

Sportz,

The lateness is a problem because my last tip won. If they had all lost it would have been OK. You have to be kidding.

My reasons were genuine. I've been off the net since yesterday morning and it was the best I could do.

I'm not the first to post late [nor will I be the last] for various good reasons. You have allowed all late tips by others and considering this is supposed to be a 'fun' comp. and not deadly serious, I don't understand your objection to my late tips. If you are allowing some but not others with no defined lateness rule you leave yourself open to playing favouritism and this comp. is too precious and serious for me mate.

There is either a 1pm cut off full stop [no excuses] or there isn't. Obviously punters now and then will be late but if the tips are before the jump [ I only picked 3 races] that should be OK in a friendly comp.

I think Real Deal should have had the last word on the hollow win you have handed him. If he wants it it's all his.

Chuck 19th August 2006 08:51 PM

well done today svenlad, just pipped me there :b

on the crash matter, sportz has originally said that there was a 1pm deadline. A few have gone over this, but only by a few minutes or an hour at the very most. no one has tipped after the feature race before, and as there is no precedent for this i think that sportz should have the final say on what happens with crash. i am not being too serious in a friendly comp i am just stating facts. sportz puts so much time and effort into these things i think it should be his call and personally i agree with him on this. crash you've put real deal in a shocking situation here - either he takes the win and appears selfish, takes the loss and appears stupid, or opt for a draw when he should get a win. its not his problem you couldn't get to a computer and he shouldn't be penalised for it

crash 19th August 2006 09:00 PM

Sportz waited until after my last race to object[now that sucks]. If it had lost it would have been no problem. My selection that won was 3 races away from when I put the tips in.

OK, seeming the comp is so serious .... congratulations real deal on a great win.

I'm out of this as I have nothing to prove here.

No, it would have still been a problem. It's just that I wouldn't have had to worry about disqualifying your tips if none of them had run a place.

Ahh no, actually, there has only been one set of tips posted just after the 1pm deadline (1:12) in the previous 4 weeks of the comp, and that was by you on the first week. Nobody else has posted tips after 1 o'clock.

The deadline is still 1pm. That is still the time that I want everyone to post their tips by. But in cases like yours where for some reason people have difficulty posting their tips, I am willing to accept tips up until the start time of the feature race. But certainly no later than that. I think that is fair.

As Chuck said, that is putting Real Deal in a terrible situation. He has done nothing wrong and shouldn't be penalised or made to look bad because you couldn't get onto the computer.

Horse Whisperer 19th August 2006 10:09 PM

crash seriously if it was the other way around you would be up in arms about it. if we just stick to the original rules posted then we dont have any dramas here. no reason to quit the comp. a few ppl have missed weeks, its not the end of the world, and like you said its just a bit of fun.

I really hope you reconsider, crash.

I'm only trying my best to run a competition here which is fair and equal for everybody. Sure, it's still basically just a fun comp, but we have to have rules. I certainly understand your problem in posting tips today, but I'm afraid that's just the way it is, and it would have been the same for anyone else.

I know personally, that if I had been unable to post my tips before 1pm, I would have just put it down as bad luck, given up on today and waited to have another go next week.

crash 19th August 2006 11:13 PM

Sportz,

You allowed the bets to ride, meaning they were accepted. If you had spoke up early and said 'no bets' it would have been fine.
The problem was the last of the 3 won [ I took a 2 race handicap too and only bet 3 races] and then you said 'no bets'.

There is a principal involved here your choosing to ignore Sportz. I couldn't give a stuff about the winning or losing and that's all your looking at.
I suppose that's all that matters nowadays and this old punter should 'get with it' and move with the times.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Chuck 19th August 2006 11:25 PM

is someone missing a dummy?

crash seriously, if you're going to leave the comp because of this then you really need to toughen up mate. you couldn't get to a computer, bad luck thats the way it goes. there is always next week, we are not even halfway through the comp and you are equal top - quit complaining, if you come out and win the victory will be all the sweeter

rabbitz 20th August 2006 07:34 AM

Hey Sportz, does that mean there is a spot up for grabs..I'll take it specially if i can come in to the comp on equal first :)

Thanks for the try chuck :-))

If I was Sportz I'd be asking Neil to fix the forum clocks [how hard could it be?] and set a 15min. pre-jump post rule as 'lateness' is about jump time surely[?] Otherwise, with the good weather and longer days coming up this comp. is going to have a completely different punter list at the end of it than it had at the beginning and the scores will be meaningless. Flexibility should be the order of the day here considering the nature of the comp., it's length and the importance of players turning up every week ....the same players!

Nobody likes a hollow victory and it was with that spirit in mind that I made the effort to get a few tips in for the sake of the game and my fellow competitor. I had not only lost my adsl line but had a computer crash and had spent all day trying to recover lost files and then re-installing windows.
In the back of my mind was the importance of 'turning up' for the comp. [I didn't even get a bet on for the day] which I made the effort to do and now wish I hadn't bothered.

Yes, we've already lost 2 people and another one didn't tip yesterday. That's why I don't want you to leave the comp as well, crash. I really think you should reconsider.

I'm starting to regret trying this comp. I guess it was a good idea at the time. In fact, I still think it's a damn good idea, but it's a difficult comp to run. :o

crash 20th August 2006 09:48 AM

Sportz,

You have done a great job just getting this up and running [braver man than me for this sort of comp.].
OK, so I wasn't happy about the way my late bets were seen and my good intentions being missed, but yes I should consider that this is certainly a hard comp to manage and your early decision on my bets has cornered you a bit, so noting that and the awkward position it puts you in, I'll stay in, move on [I'm no sook] and we can put this behind us.

Will this comp. get down to the final top 4 being the punters who turned up for the most Saturday's kick-off's?

Football is played mainly in winter for very good reasons .....getting supporters to turn up and maintaining strong interest are just 2 of them. You might think about the 1pm. rule. There is no reason you have to work out the results on Saturday, so there might be room for a bit more flexibility for punters.

Cheers.

Panther 20th August 2006 02:30 PM

Don't despair sportz--you're doing a great job. I missed the first week because I couldn't find the thread for this comp, but that's life (and I'm keen to take that $21 that was being offered early)

Sportz 20th August 2006 04:57 PM

Thanks Panther.

And thanks for sticking with it, crash. Honestly, I really hated to have to disqualify your bets, but I just thought it was the fairest way to go.

And yes, although I'd prefer that people get their tips in early, as I said, I will allow people up until the start time of the feature race of the day. But certainly no later than that.
