Bit of an understatement Mr J

Channel 7's Sunrise program 'real' medal tally based on population size. Current ranking.

1 Bahamas
2 Australia
3 Greece
4 New Zealand

sportznut 27th August 2004 09:03 AM

NZ's win in the Triathlon actually took them back past Greece and if they win a Gold in the Kayaking as is quite possible, they'll go ahead of us into 2nd place.

By setting markets at too close to 100%.
Try going to a farmer and ask what price he got paid per kilo for his potatoes.
Then thank God for the small commission bookies ask.

Mr J 27th August 2004 12:30 PM

Mo, just in case you didn't realise it was a joke. House edge is always large on irregular bets (things like world cups, exotic bets, olympics props etc).

Actually the reason bookies go broke isn't because the markets are too close to 100%, it's because they don't manage their risk effectively. Pinnacle, lowest vig on the market but easily one of the most profitable.

NO!

Seriously though, favourites have a very poor record in Olympic Marathons, so $3 was definitely no value at all.

I'm fairly confident that NZ can win 3 gold medals, but not so confident they can win more than 3. So, if Centrebet was offering a bet of over or under 2.5 gold medals, I'd say bet on over. However their bet is over or under 3.5 gold medals and I'm not so sure about that.

Well, at least that's one tip I got fairly right.

sportznut 30th August 2004 04:47 AM

I'm going to have to stop being so damn cautious with my betting. I backed both Argentina and Lithuania in the Men's Basketball... but only to finish in the top 4. I was fairly confident that they would both go close to winning the Gold Medal, but with the Americans there I just decided to take the easy way out.

Well, the yanks only just got there. I think we can pencil in China for most golds next time.

N.Z to finish 5th-8th @ $10 might be worth a token bet, dont know where their ranked, probably around 4th or so, sit back and watch them get rolled ! haha

I'm really sorry that I talked you out of that bet Goldmember. It would have been a profitable 'mistake' on your part, because they surprisingly ended up in 8th place!

Well done Mug Punta.

I thought there was a good chance of them being beaten too. I just didn't have the guts to bet on it happening though.

Agreed. This will be the showcase of the Chinese against the evil west. Expect an entry in every event. And the home advantage of x billion Chinese yelling for gold.

mug punta 30th August 2004 11:00 AM

Dont feel bad,Sportz. I didnt get on either. Now if I can just convince you guys that Port cant win the AFL we can all have a great September.

sportznut 30th August 2004 11:27 AM

Yeah, damn frustrating. Argentina were $9 pre-games and I was close to backing them along with Lithuania ($7). But while I thought they were both good chances of winning the gold, I thought they were just about certainties to make the top 4, so I decided to simply take that bet instead. Not really complaining too much though. I've done pretty well betting on these Olympics.
